Eileen Wilbur, a 74 year old blind woman received a letter stating a their would be a lein on her home, and a $48 fine if she didn't pay her debt by December 10. She only owed a penny! Luckily, a man paid her debt for her. The mayor says the incindent was "blown out of proportion". This is ridiculous! http://home.peoplepc.com/psp/newsstory.asp?cat=Strange&referrer=welcome&id=20081119/49239d50_3ca6_1552620081119-1060668164

Good for the man for paying her piddly little penny. The federal government could have easily forgiven that or call her and tell her that she owes one cent and they will send someone to pick it up. But to give a lien on her home seems rather far fetched. Unfortunately when big business is in trouble and big companies, they forgive them, and try to get the money for the little people.

That is very ridiculous. My mother-in-law went through the same thing. These companies are a rip-off and they will take you for a ride over a dang penny.

I think that people today are so money hungry that they'll do anything to get it.. especially companies that supply you with water, or other such things. I honestly don't think that that was right, one penny... I mean, people lose penny's every day just by dropping them, couldn't someone reach into their wallet at the bill place and get a penny?

I'm glad the press got hold of this story. I think there may be a lot more stories like this around. Attention must be called to these miscarriages of justice. Thank goodness for that man.

I can see why she would be upset. What a way to get a lein on her house. I understand that it was computer generated, but if this did this over 100 times, look at the postage that was paid for something like that.

Another example of the computer taking over from the human being. OK, I like my PC and use it a lot but it is just a tool and tools can, and do, break down sometimes. So the person who wrote the software should be told to put in a hook so that when all the number crunching is done a result less than $5 is flagged for a human to check it out before posting out the bill. I have had some crazy ones myself. One was a final demand and threaten of court order, jail, hanging, castration, etc. etc. for an account where I was in credit with them!! They owed me money!! haha

That is crazy. For one penny, they had to fine her $48.00 that is outrageous. I am glad the lady is taken care of and sometimes I see those behind the desk of many government jobs as thoughtless individuals. They did not care that this woman only owed $0.01, but rather issue a fine for $48 and make this poor woman go through such trouble.

It just goes to show that anyone, anyone, who is remotely available for a kick down will get one, the people who work in these state offices hate their bosses and think taking it out on people who don't deserve it is somehow justified. We live in such a non caring world, nice to know that somebody still gives a crap.
