Cell Phones - Does society need them to survive?

I had to giggle at one of the discussions about cell phones and how we can't survive in society without them. I would have to disagree on that part. I know a lot of people that do not have cell phones and won't be getting any. Mine is a prepaid because I use it if I am on the road traveling. I haven't paid on mine in 6 months because I don't need it. My husband has a cell phone as well and I think when his contract runs out he is thinking about not renewing it because half the time h just leaves it at home on his desk so why pay a bill on something you do not use. Yes they are nice to have but not needed to survive in todays society. What do you think can you survive without yours?

I got a cell phone used mainly for my daughter to get hold of me. I don't use it much and half the time forget to turn it on. Then my daughter gets upset at me hehe. She can call me free on it since we are both verizon customers on a family plan. I just bought my grandson a new phone on the same family plan. He doesn't know it yet but it has a gps thing on it. I don't think I will tell him.

I wouldn't tell him i was in there either. That is one of the best things they could have done in cell phones is the tracking device especially if the phone is going to a kid.

i donot think, cellphones are a necessity.yes,it does have its advantages but usually the bill spirals high, but now it has become a fashion statement ,i donot think it is of much use to the young kids.

agrees with the fashion statement thing and I don't think kids should have them. Them sitting in class texting isn't to good when they should e paying attention. When my sisters kids are going out she hands them a cell to take incase they need to call and to check in.

I only have a very bacis cheap phone that i can make calls on and text on. I have pay as you go. I tend to text more than make phone calls on it. I could very easiy survive without it, I have only had a phone for the last two years

I can easily survive without a cell phone They are handy for sending texts and that's about it. Maybe a real call in an emergency. I have a prepaid plan as well, I pay about 20 dollars a month just to keep in touch with Shelly and out daughter when someone is out of the house. But, if I didn't have a phone, I'm sure I'd survive

I'm going crazy without my cell!!!!! lol. How the heck can people expect me to make plans or keep in touch with friends who live far away wihtout it?! Besides, i just got good at texting and driving. What was the point of learning tht skill if i can't even use it now? lol

For me, I think we can survive without the company of cell phones. We used to live before even without the presence of the cell phones. Although, I have a cell phone, I am not using it most of the time, only on a very important call when needed. And I saved money in doing so. At home or in the office, I'm using the internet-based e-mails, chat rooms for sending messages. I'm also using the Chikka.com or Yahoo SMS in sending SMS to cell phones or to another computer in real-time and these are free services you can avail to.
