Do you think its safe to use an online dating service?

I just responded to in interesting discussion the discussion was called how did you meet your special someone, and the topic got me thinking of how nice it would be to have someone special in my life, because right now I dont have anyone yet, its very difficult to find someone you can trust these days, and I dont like hanging out in bars or night clubs so I have know idea how I would meet someone nice and trust worthy I'm not looking to tie the not or anything, I'm just looking for a nice guy to chat with and hang with maybe have a nice dinner with, nothing to heavy right now,
just a friend really, but of course you can never be to careful when it comes to getting to know someone and Iv been thinking about trying an online dating service but I'm a little concerned that an online dating service might not be safe. so friends what do you think about online dating do you think its safe or unsafe?

Hello apples, I am one of those members who replied to the discussion "how did you meet your special someone" and like what I have said there, I met my husband through online dating site. We are million miles away because he is from Florida and i'm from the Philippines. Online dating sites are not safe actually. You must have to be very cautious to someone whom you have talked to. Just like what humbug25 said, you will really know what kind of guy you are talking to by talking to him for one day. I knew too what kind of person I'm talking to for just one week of chatting. He can't pretend to be someone everyday. I'm pretty sure that if he is pretentious to be good, the real him would come out eventually. My husband and I were talking for 3 years before he decided to meet me and marry me.

Interesting that you met your husband online, yes your right its good to make sure that you know the person that your talking to espcailly online, I asked my mom what she thought and her advice was that I should just be careful and take my time getting to know a person online before I trust them enough to meet them, but I kind of already knew that but it helps to get advice from someone who has more experience with online dating and dating in general, Iv always been pretty sceptical about dating online but recently Iv been thinking about giving it a try, and thanks I really appreciate the advice.

I have a problem with meeting guys too. As you know I am a single mum so I hardly ever get out and like you I am not that fond of bars and too old for nightclubs!! LOL. I think that if it is an actual service then they should have done certain checks on the people that join anyway so it should be safe. I personally don't see any harm in meeting someone on line provided you are careful. I think you need to chat to them a long time online before you can trust them with an really personal details, telephone number, address etc. I think that after a a while you will get the vibes that they are unsavoury or not and make your decissions from there. I met my boyfriend online and I am very happy I gave online dating a try. I don't think that online dating services are unsafe as long as you take the right precautions. I always talked to the person on the phone before the first meeting. I never gave out my name or address and we always met at a public place. I made sure that someone knew where I was going and who I was going to meet.
