Afghan for My Sister is Finally Finished!

Afghan for My Sister - Granny Square Afghan
for a Full-Sized Bed

At the beginning of October I took my sister to Walmart. We stopped at the yarn section and I began picking out colors for a project that I wanted to do. My sister asked what the project would be. I told her that I was considering making an afghan for my daughter and her boyfriend. She told me the colors she said she thought would be great for an afghan. I began the project making one square at a time. It took me nearly a month to complete the squares and put it together. The edge is done in the main color and I think I may need to add a few rows to it. Maybe I will let her decide if she would like it larger. Her birthday is Tuesday, but we are having a party for her on Saturday. She will be led to think it is our family Christmas party. Hope we can pull it off. Now I have to busy myself with mittens and other projects for the grandkids. Are you making any gifts this season? Post a pic of you have one. Click on the photo to enlarge it to see the finished afghan.

Your sister is going to love the afghan. It is very pretty. I started out learning how to do the granny squares and then learned how to do other patterns. The only thing I don't like about making the granny squares are having to tie them off so often. I have not gotten anything made for anyone for Christmas. I would love to get some yarn and make an afghan for my grandson but it has been so long I probably wouldn't even know how many skeins to get and then wouldn't remember how to crochet. hahaha

I think this afghan took about 15-20 skeins. I still would like to make the border about 4 rows larger. But, I will let her decide if she wants it bigger.

Beautiful job!!! Your sister is lucky!!! I used to make my gifts until I realized most people don't appreciate all the HARD work that goes into them!!! I made a girlfriend a beautiful sweater for Christmas. She asked where she could return it because she preferred something better. She was going to add her money to the money she would get on the return to buy something store bought that she preferred. I guess I should have been honored she couldn't tell it was handmade, but it p!ssed me off. I told her I'd return it so she gave me the sweater & I handed her $20. That was the LAST gift I ever gave her. I later sold the sweater for $50 to a lady wanting a homemade gift for her daughter & she felt she was getting a bargain. Her daughter wore the sweater because I saw her wearing it on numerous occasions. My friend saw her wearing it & commented what a beautiful sweater she was wearing & even asked where she could buy one. The daughter said oh my Mother had this handmade for me but I don't know who did it. I'll ask & let you know later. My friend never realized that it was the sweater that I had given her the Christmas before.

That serves her right. I think your friend sounded very tacky. I am glad you had the pleasure of seeing someone wear and enjoy that handmade sweater.

What a slap in the face! I would love a handmade sweater. Your friend really is a selfish person. I wouldn't have given her any other gifts either.

She was surprised to hear that the family get together was this weekend. She wanted to make cookies for it. I told her to forget about it this year. We are only having a get together with snack foods rather than cooking a big meal. She swallowed it hook, line and sinker!

I buy baskets at the Dollar Store and fill them with homemade goodies. Everyone loves to get a treat. Even the kids. When my nieces and nephews were little I gave each one of them a little basket filled with cookies and candy.

Very pretty, I am sure your sister is going to love it. I haven't been doing much crochet with yarn, I stick mostly to crocheting with threads. I am making sun catchers out old cds. I will try to post a picture of one soon.

You are lucky that you can work with such fine threads. I have tried but became frustrated and gave up. Can't wait to see pics of your work!

That is such a thoughtful gift, anything hand made is the most thoughtful gifts one could give. Besides not everyone can make crafts and such making it even nicer. Have a great day Tuesday and a wonderful Saturday party!!!

This is a nice gift for her, and I am sure she will truly appreciate it as well. I used to do a lot of Crocheting like making potholders, etc. but have not done so in a couple of yrs. now. Sometimes I really do miss it though, and should maybe consider taking it back up again since I still have a lot of yarn on hand as well. Sounds like you are saving some $$ for sure making your gifts this yr. as well.

I love doing craft projects but I rarely finish anything...sometimes I buy all the stuff and don't even start...that's so weird...I wish I could fix it. So, to say I envy you your abilities is an understatement. Your work is lovely.

I hook them together using a chain stitch. I wouldn't do it on a sewing machine.

I'm a self taught crocheter(sp?) and I tried to do that and I got a ridge...not a flat seam. What did I do wrong?

How do you join the squares together? Would it be ok to line them up side by side and join them with a suitable stitch on the sewing machine? Also, what sort of yarn did you use? It's huge Elusive...must have taken you hours and hours.

The afghan is very beautiful... I have made several afghans these last couple months..My daughter needed b-day gifts for friends at work..I've made at least 10 since the beginning of October..I have several more to make.. Last year I made several afghans and over 25 scarves...I love to crochet. Hopefully I will be getting a digital camera so I can actually get pics of them and upload them.

What a beautiful afghan you made for your sister. You are very talented at crochetting. I haven't crocheted since I was a little girl. I taught myself way back then just by watching my mother and my grandmother when they crocheted. I know that your sister will love this as it is very personal and made by you. I hope she keeps it and passes it down to her kids. She is very lucky to have you as a sister! Have a nice day and happy myLotting!!!

I wanted to make her an afghan for quite some time. I made one for our mother a few years back and my sister loved it. She commented that if our mother didn't want it, she would take it!

CHristmas Stockings - Stockings I've made for my fmily
That is so awesome! She is absolutely going to love it!!! And that's so cool how you got her to help you pick it out and all :) I know everyone always says that they love the gifts that I make them. These kinda old, but I've made stockings for everyone in my family - all the neices/nephews got them years ago, and I just realized I need to make another one for a newcomer this year! I've made afghans in the past and pillows, also dish cloths for my siblings. I'd usually rather do that than buy something for someone.

that is just lovely I admire your sticktuitiveness. I always find myself giving up on afghans before they are finished... I love the pale color that was used in the joining of the squares - it makes the whole thing so very cozy and inviting. great job! btw December 2nd is an excellent day to be born :)

That is a lovely gift and I'm sure she's going to be thrilled! I love the colours. Hope the party goes off well and you all have a great time. I feel guilty now though, I usually make gifts but have been too busy this year! At least I've made my own cards though and tried to match the card to the person so perhaps they wont mind bought gifts this year!

that was a very nice afghan you made for your sister. I'm not making any gifts this year for Christmas. I'm pregnant with twin girls so i am busy making stuff for them. i am finished making the baby afghan for Elianna. It is pink and red. there are hearts throughout it with her name crocheted in the middle. Now i'm working on the one for Isabella. i don't have any pictures yet because i misplaced my camera. i hope i find it soon so i can show off pictures of the afghans. once i'm done the afghans, i found some cute dresses i can crochet for them.

Those are beautiful grannies, EB!!! During my life I have made very few pieced afghans - the pieces seem to take me FOREVER! Of course, I may just get bored of the same thing over and over, LOL. I think I have crafting ADD. If I crochet anything, it's small nowadays - like coffe cozies, or fingerless gloves. :) A scarf is a big project for me! Congratulations on your hard work! You're sister is really lucky, and I can tell made with more than yarn - there's love in there too. :)

I think that an afghan is a nice gift for this season, but I am not good at making this kind of things. For this season, I am painting some wood squares, they are small, and the design in each one it`s about Christmas images, trees, boots, snow, Santa Clñaus, I am painting 4 of them. Although, It`s really nice, It takes time and be careful when you are painting, be relax and be inspired to mix colors or to paint them in the right place. I am planning to give it to my husband, because he so good at painting, or making some handcrafts, so I want to show him that I´m learning how to develop this skill, however it doesn´t mean that my little Christmas squares are not as perfect as his work which he used to do.
