I had mentioned awhile back that I have a lot of Christmas ornaments my mother made way back in the 40's to 60's. This is an example of one type she made. The photo is attatched. It has a lot of straight pins, hat pins, beads etc on it. Very beautiful I feel. Do you have any handmade ornaments at all for your tree? Do you have any that are from years and years ago as well? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I like that ornament your mother made. I know that the kids and I at one time made some of those ornaments that you paint then put in the oven and shrink them down. I have a few that my kids have made but they are in the attic right now. We also have some old ornaments that were on my husbands tree when he was a baby.

Check out my page. I've added some others that are on the tree. Some of these are a pain as the pins etc fall out and are hard to find the pins, sequins, deads, etc exactly the same. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Your mother was very talented it seems. I wonder if on some of them if you could put a touch of glue to hold them in place? They do look like they are in great shape for being made when they were. I can see why she wanted you to have them, you have taken very good care of them.

I made something like that back in the 60's, but who knows what's happened to it. I've made some this year too (shhh don't tell anyone, they are going to be part of gifts.)

That is a beautiful photo of your mothers handmade ornament. Sad to say I do not have any hand made ornaments anymore. At one time I had a bunch but between the years of moving alot. They were either given away or left behind because no room to take them.

Embroidered cut work Christmas tree ornaments - Embroidered cut work Christmas tree ornaments made by my daughter-in-law
That ornament is just beautiful. Your mother really had the touch with those ornaments. I don't have any home made ones myself. Well, I take that back. My daughter in law made some snowflakes and candy canes on her embroidery machine a few years ago. They are beautiful, cut work pieces. I'm adding a picture I cut from a picture of my tree last year. There are three ornaments, but they were hung in different spots.

Kewl. I had tho8ught about buying one of those computerized sewing machines that embroider things like that. I was thinking of making and selling towels and caps etc. But those things, for a good one, are VERY costly. So that isn't going to happen anytime soon. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~~

I have one, but mine is also a regular sewing machine with an embroidery machine. My daughter-in-law's is just a big embroidery machine, and you are right. They are very expensive!! I paid enough for my machine and I sure couldn't afford one of those, too. She was taking orders for things until she got pregnant and had the baby. So I don't know if she's going to get back to that any way soon or not. She does such a beautiful job I think she could put up a shop on the Internet like others have done.

Grandpa it looks like she was very talented. The ornament is quite beautiful. I have an antique cloth santa, victorian and I am not sure how old it is. I had some hand made ornaments and they got lost or stolen in my last move.

yes, it IS very beautiful - even more so because it was made by your mother. Several years ago (10?) I found in the bottom of a box lot I got at auction quite a few kits for similar beaded ornaments. They are by far my favorites on the tree. It did take a while to complete the kits, I would do a couple a year. Now, I wish I had more. I think they are way overpriced in the craft supply catalogs, considering what the actual materials are and you have to put the time in. Be different if you purchased them at a craft fair. I just looked at www.herschners.com it does not appear like they have the really ornate ones, but they do offer some kits. http://www.herrschners.com/products/product.aspx?sku=512025

The only homemade ornament that I have on my tree is an ornament that I got 2 Christmas's ago just after having my daughter. It has her name, age, and her hand prints. It was her first Christmas and she was only about 6 months old and that by far is my favorite ornament on the whole tree. When we put up the tree last weekend and I pulled it out of the box I almost started crying when I saw it. One part I like the most about decorating the tree is the memories that some ornaments hold and bring back to you every year. That ornament will do that to me every Christmas =) Luv & Hugzz, PurpleTeddyBear xx

I do have a few of them, some I have made over the last 40 years and some that were from family members.. I think that I am going to try and redo a few of them, since over time they tend to yellow a bit.. I believe that I can redo them safely and keep them looking like they were to start with and also looking new and cleaner.. They tend to yellow with age and years of dust that accululates when leaving them out for over a month at a time each Christmas.. Wish me luck as it is going to be a job to try and redo them.. I also have quite a few that my son made when he was a lot younger, some of them were made by him when he was as young as 4 or 5 years old.. I also gave him and his new wife a few for his tree, along with the warning that he had better not let anything happen to them, they mean a lot to me and I have kept them for many, many years..

I keep mine wrapped in tissue paper you use for clothes in boxes. Then they go into a box then inside a plasctic storage container. No yellowing here. I can only imagine the work you have ahead of you. I have tried to replace some of the pins, hat pins, beads, and or sequins and they are nearly impossible to find that match the originals. I love your Mum's homemade ornaments, GB - how special they are! I know your grandchildren will love them too - and they'll pass them down to their own children one day. Those are the things that make Christmas extra special!

I have made a few for my tree...but I don't have any old ones....When the kids were growing up they made one every year....when they left home they got to take their ornaments to start their own trees.....so I didn't have much left. For a while I did my tree different each year....but for the last few I have just done snowmen.

Your mother was a very talented woman. Those ornaments are beautiful! I used to have a lot of ornaments that my mother made, but I've moved around so much and storage space has sometimes been leaky and at one time demolished, so I've lost most of them, but she started a tradition. I didn't make many when my oldest kids were little, but when the youngest came along my life was much different and we always made something every year. I don't know what happened to the styrofoam ball she decorated with sequins and corsage pins, but I thought it was a beauty. My tradition since I have grand children is to make each of them one ornament of some kind every year. Some have been very elaborate, and some very plain just depending on what materials I had on hand or could afford to buy or how much time I had (I have LOTS of grand kids). I think hand made ornaments are much better than buying a tub full of commercial ones. The hand made ones are part of your life history.
