I am confused with this one...

An elementary teacher that I have observed thought her grade 3 students about different kinds of animals... Such as Carnivore which eats meat, Herbivore which eats plants; and an Omnivore which eats both meat and plants. But then she asked one of her student this question: "Are you a Carnivore?" the student replied... "No Ma'am! I am an Omnivore!" the teacher said... "Aren't you a herbivore and a carnivore also" the student answered... "NO ma'am!" What do you think? Who got a point? Can an Omnivore be consiedered as a carnivore and herbivore as well? Isn't it clear that OMNIVORE is one classification different from the other two? Whats your idea about this... THAT TEACHER made me so confused. :)

The student was an omnivore. He could not have been a carnivore because a carnivore eats ONLY meat. The same is true for herbivore. They eat ONLY plants. I think the teacher was trying to trick the student, or maybe just make him use his reasoning ability.

I hope so... but she doesn't look like trickingthe student. She looks like so unaware that she's teaching the kids wrong concept... by the way... SHE INSISTED that the kid is also a herbivore and a carnivore

Hi there Jhordie. I agree with the statement that he was an omnivore as this type of person is part carnivore and part herbivore. He was only part carnivore and not totally so i believe that's why he said he is not a carnivore. It's like people listening to all type of music - those are not rockers as they don't listen only to rock, but they do listen to rock - get it ?:P

LOL =D Since there are 3 classifications for it, it means that the students's answer is correct.. BEcause an Omnivore can eat either meat or plants to survive, meaning, it has got choices.. But being a carnivor, it has no choice, it only eats meat, and if it dun, it will die.. Like wise for herbivore, if they have no plants to eat, they will die too, as they have no othrr alternatives, unlike Omnivore.. haha

Most of us are omnivores, which includes being carnivores. Some, though, are vegetarians or vegans, avoiding all but plants as foodstuff. I was a vegan for many years, but when I had to go through chemotherapy, the doctors said red meat was an absolute must. At first, it made me ill, because it tasted weird, and I couldn't help picturing the animals' cute little faces. Over time, though, I did get used to it. I still try to eat all the red meat I can because I'm very anemic, but it doesn't seem to help. I'd love to make a deal with all the world's animals -- I won;t eat them if they won't eat me! Pass the celery, please!

You should consider iron supplements to increase your iron levels, of course with blood tests to make sure you are getting enough and not too much. You should also consider B12 supplements. Injections are supposed to be good, but I have heard of good results with sublingual B12, a special tablet is put under the tongue and bypasses the stomach and liver. Lack of iron creates anemia and lack of B12 is called pernicious anemia. They are actually two different conditions. Chemotherapy is hell. They try to kill you but not quite, hoping the cancer will die and not you. I have seen chemotherapy recipients and it is no fun. I hope the therapy is successful and you live a long healthy life.

The best way to get your nutrients is of course with a balanced diet. I can understand your moral stand of being vegan but you need to super knowledgeable on what nutrients are in your food if you decide to forgo a certain food group and what will provide those nutrients that you are giving up. Some people cannot tolerate iron supplements as it can upset your digestive system. Most people complain of constipation but in my mother it gave her diarrhea so sometimes there is no easy fix. You might have to listen to your doctors on this one but you can at least discuss it. Your health is the most important thing.

Wow how recent was this? I thought everyone would know by now that humans, in general, are omnivores. Guess there are still ignorant people out there. Sure people cannot become herbivores like many people have said since we need some type of protein, so vegetarians/vegans eat tofu or some sort of other alternative. But most people aren't born used to eating just veggies, they have to get used to it. And humans can be carnivores if they really wanted to, as unhealthy as that is, but most people like side dishes to complement their meat and can't just eat plain meat. Thee student is right of course.

I think the student is right that he is an omnivore because he eats both not only one of each. If he eats only plants then he is a herbivore if he eats only meat then he is a carnivore.

The teacher is obviously a vegan or a vegetarian, and in a vegetarian's opinion, there are only two categories, herbivore or carnivore. That is why when you see a movie where the producer or director is a vegan, when the people are eating, they just get a big steak each and no vegetables, because a vegan cannot comprehend someone who eats both. It is too far fetched and impossible for them. An omnivore is someone who eats vegetables and meats, a herbivore only eats veggies and plant food, and a carnivore eats only meat. An omnivore is not a carnivore or a herbivore.

the teacher's probably sticking to the letter of the word "vore" because it would imply you can't be both you have to eat one or the other. whereas omnivore would mean anything's on the menu pretty much. the teacher's just being picky.

I was taught that Carnivores and Herbivores different...you cant be both if you eat both meat and veggies like we do...we're omnivores. Its like calling yourself a meat eater and a vegetarian.

If i recall correctly also...Carnivores have a large mouth with sharp pointed teeth that allow them to grasp their prey and tear off large chunks of flesh, which is swallowed whole rather than ground or chewed first. Herbivores have flat teeth, which allow them to grind food before swallowing it. Because they lack a stomach for holding large volumes of food, the herbivore must eat frequently (i'm told some herbivores dont have a stomach just an intestinal tract for food digestion) Omnivores can and will eat vegetable matter, they cannot digest some types of grains and plants. Their teeth and digestive tract possesses some of the traits of both the carnivore and the herbivore.

The student is correct. That is why humans have canine teeth for tearing food like meat and molars for chomping veggies. I think maybe the teacher needs to go back to school. I don't like it when teachers question students to the point of arguing especially when they are incorrect. It confuses the students and can hurt there confidence leading to other issues.

The teacher was either confused or wrong. Herbivore gets its energy from eating plants, Omnivore from eating plants and meat, and Carnivore from eating meat. It is not just a choice, but the bodily design and functions are different between the three. Omnivore have sophisticated digestive systems and long bowels to extract the nutrients and energy from large volumes of nutrient poor plant material. Their teeth are designed for lots of grinding and chewing. In fact they chew their cud, regurgitating wads of plant material and rechewing it. Typical would be cows and sheep. Ominivores have all purpose teeth. They eat almost anything but the plant material tends to be more nutrient dense like vegetables and fruits although some greenery is consumed. They will eat nutrient dense animal material like oysters, fish and animal flesh. Their digestive system is medium length to allow reasonable time for plant material to be digested and absorbed but not too long so animal materials do not stay too long in the digestive system. Typically humans and bears. Carnivores eat primarily flesh and offal. The teeth have well developed canines for attacking animals and tearing of flesh. Little chewing is required. The food is nutrient rich and comparitively easily digested. The digestive system tends to be simpler and shorter and allows rapid transit of digested material through the digestive system. Typically lions and wolves. While there are some overlaps where a certain species generally of one classification adapt to fit into a niche in the environment and there is a somewhat continuum where overlaps occur, the classifications are not only what type of food the classified animals consume, but their adaptations to handling and digesting this food like their teeth and digestive structures. I might add that if humans try to eat the diet of a herbivore they will eventually sicken and die. They will suffer vitamin B12 deficiency and possibly iron deficiency. Vegans need supplements to avoid this. I might add that prey tend to have eyes on the sides of their heads so they can see behind them as they are being chased and hunters (both omnivores and carnivores) tend to have have front facing eyes to enable binocular vision. So take a look in the mirror and look at your all purpose teeth and binocular vision and your classification is clear, then take a look at your dinner plate and it is clear again.

The medical field is strictly a hobby. My knowledge on the subject is more a result of research in discussions with vegans who believe that humans are built to be vegetarians. As outlined above our physiology presents us as an omnivore. We can survive on plants with the appropriate supplements though so if one is morally opposed to meat eating one can still be healthy if you are careful with your diet. There is a south Asian religious sect that is strictly vegan and they survive. However when they move to North America they get sick. It is the accidental ingestion of insects and eggs and such that seems to be enough to stave off the nutritional deficiencies in their own country while North American produce is too clean. Our closest cousin is the Chimpanzee and its diet is mostly plants such as fruit and insects but it does hunt and eat meat occasionally. Thus if we were to get to a more natural diet maybe we should be eating less meat but more insects. One category rarely discussed is insectivore, animals that only eat insects like ant eaters. Thanks for the best response.

Quiet confusing but I think the student think that those 3 classifications are different from each other meaning to say, when you are a carnivore yo can't be an omnivore and vice versa. But for me all of us is an omnivore and also we can be a carnivore and a hervivore. Got my point? I hope so..:-)

But a carnivore eats ONLY meat. And Herbivore would be for veggies ALONE. So how can an Omnivore be any of the two?

Well, first of all, there are actually 3 classification about the types of foostuff.I think the student have answered the question smartly. As most of the people are omnivore in the world ,not nothing else but meat or plants. It seems that's a special way of the teacher to improve the reasoning ability by those questions.
