Getting Paid for Your A's

Pay for performance is not an entirely new concept - public schools in New York City have started paying students up to $50 for performing well on standardized tests, and other school districts are experimenting with giving gift certificates to top-performing students. But GradeFund puts the rewards in students' hands. Or rather in their friends' and families' hands. The site is akin to Facebook in that it lets students create a profile and send out invitations asking for sponsors to pledge whatever they please for each A - $1, $2 or more http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20081202/us_time/08599186311300;_ylt=ArFJGQoi.MxKz._Qh8BKWIkDW7oF I couldn't believe what I was reading. So I decided to share this. Do you agree with this concept? do you think this is a positive thing, that it actually works?

It is my opinion that you should do whatever works. I tell my daughter that school is her job, her work, and that I hope she does well at it. I would not be troubled by her getting paid for getting A's, although that doesn't cover everything. In fact, it would encourage a child to take less challenging classes.. so I think that needs to be addressed somehow.

I don't have a problem with paying for A's. I mean, we are trying to teach them to work hard so when they get a job - they can make good money... why not start the concept while in high school? $50 for an A is over doing it, as in real life, it is not easy to make good money, it does take hard work! But I'd say $5 or $10 depending on the class. English is I think easier than calculas so it should be $5 while calculis is $10. I know if I'd has some kind on incentive, I'd a worked harder to get better grades.

I actually think it is a positive thing because it will make student try that much harder to succeed to get them A's. I wish they had something like this when I was going to school. I also think they should offer kids something for not quitting also. A incentive to keep going to school. My sister gets a $1 for each time she does well on a reading test. I figure she would have enough for a Happy Meal a month, since they are once a week.

I think it is fine for parents to give and incentive to their children for good grades, but I think this is going a little bit overboard.

I have mixed feelings. I personally think this is a bit greedy. When I was a kid my parents and other relatives would give me like $5 for a good report card, and I give my son video games if he gets a good report card, and his grandfather gives him money or lectures depending on the grades. But I think this site would end up being abused somehow. It's good to encourage kids to do their best, but I think kids should strive for good grades just because they're supposed to, not to get money out of it. What sort of lessons are we teaching our kids if we have to bribe them with tons of money in order to get good grades?
