Growing Cress

Now some of you know that I have been asking about frugal living. Now I was in the supermarket today and brought a punnet of cress as the children always have egg and cress sandwiches on thursdays. I have decided to grow my own cress in Jan so I though I would start saving the plastic punnets and grow the cress in those as that is the amount that I need. Now to keep a growing supply so I always have some cress I need to know how long it takes to grow a punnet of cress and when to start the next punnet and so forth so I always have a ready supply of cress. I will have about five punnets to sit on the kitchen window sill. So anyone have any ideas??? The cress cost 29p for a punnet, it wasn't my usual supermarket as I forgot to buy cress when I did the weekly shop so I think I did pay more money today.

Cress - Cress sprouts used for cutting
Unwins do a pack of cress seed for kids: http://www.unwins.co.uk/cress-seed-kit-pid1483.html at $1.49 for 3 sowings, you'd be better off buying it from the supermarket as you need it! They do, however sell something called 'Polycress' which can be sown at the same time as mustard and grows as quickly http://www.unwins.co.uk/cress-polycress-seeds-pid1173.html This packet is 99p and contains enough seed for 5 punnets. The instructions for the Seeds4Kids packet state: "After about a week, your cress should be between 2 and 4cm high, and will be ready for cutting. Do this carefully with the round-ended scissors. Wash the cress, and use it in sandwiches (it's particularly tasty in egg sandwiches) or add it to salads." The Polycress doesn't say how long to harvest but I would expect about a week.

I have to say that it's probably a break even situation between growing cress and buying it. We used to grow the stuff on a damp J cloth when I was young. Anyway, I LOVE egg and cress sandwiches Anne. Can I come and live with you on Thursdays please. I'll be good (ish).

A punnet is a small plastic pot, holds just enough cress to make sandwiches. Its not water cress, if you look at one of the sites someone has said earlier they will show you a piccy

Good luck with this endeavor. Growing some of your own food is always a good idea. It is important that we, at least in part, shift back away from being consumers and reconnect with being producers.
