This is so stupid I just can't believe it. The EPA is considering putting gas tax on livestock because greenhouse gases emitted by belching and flatulence amounts to air pollution. The fee was proposed for farms with livestock operations that emit more than 100 tons of carbon emissions in a year and fall under federal Clean Air Act provisions. The EPA is considering putting taxes or fees on farmers with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs to pay an annual fee of about $175 for each dairy cow, $87.50 per head of beef cattle and $20 for each hog. The fees on a modest-sized cattle ranch could run $30,000 to $40,000 a year. this kind of fee or tax would put a lot of ranchers out of business. Then if you want to have some milk, steak, hamburger or a ham sandwich you will have have it imported. So you might consider becoming a vegetarian because meat will be to expensive and possible not safe. Those people at the EPA need to get a life. What next our gassy pets then us when we pass gas?

Let them eat cake? I think someone in government is out of touch with reality. Cows can eat grass and hay. People cannot. I certainly hope this is just an urban legend.

It sounds like one of those wacko PETA press releases. It sounds like their insanity is spreading. Governments should not be using the tax system to promote lifestyles like vegenism or vegetarianism. They already intrude into our lives enough without being thought police.

Grrrrrrrrr...as a farmer this really ticks me off!!! Don't they realize that if they do this it will send the prices of milk and milk products soaring to where the average family could not afford to purchase milk for their children?! When we were still a dairy farm here, we only had around 50 cows that were milking, yet that was enough for us to sustain the farm as a dairy. If they did that the smaller farmers such as ourself would be out of business. Many might find it surprising, but all of those increases in milk and meats right now are NOT going to the farmer, they're going for shipping costs. With all the rises in the pricing, we are NOT getting anything from it. Yet, we still have the same increases in fuel to run our tractors and farm equipment, etc. What this will do is not only drive up the prices, it will force the small farmers out of business. This is one of the most fool-hardy ideas that they've come up with yet!! I wish if you remember where you read this, that you could provide me with a link to an article source on this. I would love to pass it on to our local farm bureau. My lands feed a beef farmer right now, he has around 100 steers. If this was to come into effect he would owe about $8,750.00 per year! Needless to say there goes any profit what-so-ever, and I know he would quit farming. If he quits farming, then it will just be a few hundred more acres of housing development (as would my farm too.) This is the most insane thing I've read about yet. There are other and better ways that they can reduce the emissions of gasses than to threaten America's food supply!

Hello Joy. This is the most insane thing that I have ever heard of. My family isn't into the livestock part of farming but I do like to keep up on some of what goes on in the farming community because of past connections, i also have a son that is head foreman on a ranch in Wyoming. I first read about this in the news section of myLot this morning but here is a link to another article. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,462445,00.html

Ok if it wasn't so sad, it would be funny. Pretty soon they will start taxing belching and flatulence in us as well. I used to joke that at some point it would come like this, but I thought I was only joking LOL Oh well.. this is it the world is officially of its rockers LOL

These people aren't being very smart especially with the economy the way it is. As I said before they need to get a life. I sure hope it doesn't go any where.

Exactly did the EPA forget the 3 Billion people on earth that are belching and passing gas. There is just to much government. That is crazy. With the economy in shambles they want to worry about a cow passing gass that is just ridiculous.

I can see them in their office now staring at the ceiling and tossing pencil up to get them stuck. Maybe one fell on an employees head and he got this bright idea so he looks like he's working. They'll figure out a way to tax the people passing gas too

I don't wish to appear picky, baileycows, but don't the other 4.2 billion people also belch and fart? And while it may seem ridiculous, the fact is concentrating large herds of cattle in relatively small areas does, in fact affect carbon emissions. Whether this is the way to change that is debatable, but it is something to worry about. Lash

That's ridiculous! Have you ever wondered what we would do with all the cows if we became vegetarians? Would they become pets? Could people pay a "cow deposit" (sounds rather "cow-like" already!) to keep them in their apartments? Would we need licenses and have to prove that they are neutered? Would we have packs of wild cows grazing dangerously through our neighborhoods?Apparently we would have to pay a gas tax on them too. Do we need a bean growers tax? Bananas? eggs? carbonated beverages? How about geysers? That horrible Old Faithful should be shut down!

You know I hadn't thought about what the farmers would do with all those cows. They could be turned loose like the horses are on the federal land. There is the buffalo that range on federal land too. Are they going to tax the parks for them too. and then theres the deer and the list goes on and on.

WOW, I did know that all the animals passing gas was hard on the environment, but to have a gas tax, thats going far. I know the govt. had paid huge amounts of money to coduct a study about the gas that they let off. Maybe the farmers can add some anti-gas medicine in the food. I wonder if thats been thought of. People really do come up with some things. I think that society, the factories, vehicles etc. lets off more polution then a bunch of farm animals. I agree, some people do need to get a life, we have more important problems facing us then a bunch of farting and burping cows. lol.

Yea may be the farmers should start giving all the livestock some beano. Too much money has already been wasted in studying the bunch of farting and burping cows. If it wasn't so pathetic it would be very funny.

That maybe because of our greatest demand yearly of meat and dairy products. This could maybe minimize if mostly of us will go vegetarians or just a semi-vegetarians. This means that the demand on this meat and dairies could be minimized. In this way the EPA could not put this gas tax too high for our suppliers. Besides, being a vegetarian or semi-vegetarian could put our health more enjoyable rather than depending mostly on meat and some can goods came from red meats. So go on vegees and enjoy good health most of our days..cheers

I personally believe we eat way to much meat any way. I also believe we would all be much better off to eat more vegetables or plant food. I'm not a vegetarian but am trying to eat more plant food. I still think that this kind of gas tax is pretty silly.

That is ridiculous. I myself don't eat any meat as it is because I simply do not like the taste of meat. However I do use milk and things. I can't believe they are even considering this fee. It would be awful.

It also takes less land to raise vegetables and grain than it does for livestock. But it's still a stupid tax.
