I am ashamed to admit this. We are rowdy when we have a seminar. The speaker had to intervene several times so that there will be no cross debates. It seems that the teachers are the worst learners. © ronaldinu 2008

teachers are used to do most of the talking inside the classroom, so when the situation is reversed such as during seminars when the teachers are sitting and listening to the speaker, they would be asking so many questions or simply giving their own opinions. situations like this would tend to test the capability of the speaker. if the participants are given hands-on activities or trainings that involve the use of their senses in order to develop their skills, then seminars would somewhat proceed smoothly.

lol...that's so true. When we have teacher's meetings, it gets so noisy and we go off the topic so often...it actually irritates me...and I've said so many times. We teach kids how to behave and to have a proper discussion and this is how we behave when the kids aren't around! Yes, it did seem to me that they are not open to learning. And I've noticed that even during our bigger training programmes where the teachers of the bigger school are also included. Teachers are making comments among themselves and sometimes even giggling like school kids while a speaker here is telling us nuances of child development and different aspects we need to learn. I do not mind asking genuine questions based on instances in class that we have come across and discussing that (even if it might go slightly off focus)...but not paying attention to what a speaker is saying...is totally disrespectful too...and how can we then expect respect from our students (even if they don't see us behaving this way, 'YOU' know you are...you aren't practising what you preach! and by you, I mean any person and not you in particular).

Lol, but I bet you have fun at those seminars. Hey that is good actually because not everyone teaches the same way or do things the same. I feel that it helps keep others on their toes.

I would say that not all teachers are poor learners. In Zen, a teacher acknowledges that he also has something to learn from his/her students. There is a saying that "both student and teacher disappear, so that only the lessons are left". :-) Derek

Not really!! It depends on how you expect a teacher to learn. Now, when I was a teacher, I hated having to sit quietly and listen to someone's load of rubbish. I, however, love to learn on my own, and I do it faster too. Cheers and happy mylotting

Hi ronaldinu, If you think that, well I hope one you can watch the polictians having a debate in the house of commons in the UK, it is terrible and they are running our country? and yet if the kids behave like that in the class rooms the teaches always say it is unruley ha ha. Tamara

Not only are teachers the worst learners, sometimes they're also the worst teachers. I had teachers in Jr and High school that would come in, tell the class to read a particular chapter in the text book, leave the room and we wouldn't see them until the end of class, and they did this almost every school day. They very seldom stayed in the class and taught and when they did they just read from the book.

I had to laugh when I read this because this is so true, they are also stubborn as well and very outspoken, I found that at my school, and it was worst from the females, no disrespect ladies, but when you work in a Primary School and it's all run by females well you do see a different side and trying to tell a teacher they are wrong is very very difficult and they won't hear of it!

yes, some are this way. While yet others think they already know everything and you can't say anything to them that they don't already know. Then again there are some that welcome new information. And are glad to learn what they can are are aware that we learn comething new all of the time.

I just attended a teacher's congress last November and it was such a successful seminar because the speaker was a great one. He was 81 years old, still alive and kicking sharing all his experiences as a teacher and book writer. I guess, it will really depend on the speaker.

lol =D Maybe it's true.. IN my own opinion, i do think that most teachers are arrogant and proud.. Because they tend to think that they know everything and thus they refuse to learn anything new.. PLus, because of their own profession, they are used to teaching students but not be taught by someone else.. lol =D The feeling is totally different and thus, they wont like it in a way.. hehe

Hmm that's kinda shame alright. Maybe the speaker during the seminar is not well prepared on his/her topic, least he/she would be able respond questions and debates or queries be minimized. However, if intellectual questions and discussions that arise, this can significantly contribute and substantiate the discussion and participants can learn a lot, but its still case to case basis. I have also encountered this kind of instance before, gladly there are those who can manage to make the program better.
