Have you ever attended a book festival?

2005 National Book Festival poster - Posters for annual book festivals are usually interesting and very creative.

Attending book festivals is a favored activitiy for my husband and I. Texas (my home state) has a nice annual book festival that we have attended now for 9 years running. Here is a link to this year's event; http://www.texasbookfestival.org/. It has afforded us the opportunity to meet many interesting authors over the years. Salmund Rushdie, Herman Wouk, David Barry, Amy Tan, Doris Kearns-Goodwin, Alexander McCall-Smith, Barack Obama (before anyone but Oprah really knew anything about him), Mitch Albom, R. L. Stine, Anita Shreve,..... to name a few off the top of my head. These events often have children's book activities, food book activities, music and many other events pertaining to books. There is also the opportunity to meet publishers and learn a lot about the book industry. Does this sound like something you would enjoy attending? Do you live near any of the world famous book festivals? Have any book festival stories to share? Do you have an author you would like to meet in person?

We have the world renowned Hay on Wye Festival here, although I have never gone to it. But Hay is a place where almost every shop is a book shop and you can but books at such daft prices that it would make the authors cry! Literally pennies in some places. However, the Texas Festival sounds very grown up. I don't know whether I would want to go. I love books and reading. But I do it as a solitary activity and I'm not sure that I want to be surrounded by all the fun of the fair and worse, all those wannabe writers. I feel the same about writing. What little I do, I do quietly and away from public gaze. Which may defeat the object of course! I am not sure that I really do want to met any authors. Why would I want to? I am not generally that interested in why a character is the way that s/he is, they just are. I might be interested to know how they research certain aspects of their work. Sorry, this all sounds a little negative. I don't mean it to be.

Here we have the Annual Calcutta Book Fair which is like an annual pilgrimage. I have been there since my teenage days with my parents and now we go there (hubby & I) with our son. Being held in the month of January when the winter sun is just perfect for a day out, its really love of books, family picnic, fun time all rolled into one. I cant even begin to say how much I have learned from these outings…little known books which have since enriched my life, complete collections at discount prices (which otherwise would have been unaffordable to me), latest dictionaries and encyclopaedia (this before the invasion of internet), books on everyday arts of cooking and embroidery…reminding me of recipes and designs which were really shunted to the back of my mind…aimless strolling through the dusty compound, smell of new books, unknown people hawking little magazines with zest, nameless artists doing your portrait for a pittance, clowns and balloons and of course the food stalls. January is coming yet again…yes just another visit to my favourite annual event. Oh regarding authors…no there’s none in particular that I would have loved to meet…I find most of them too officious and flamboyant for my comfort…I am comfortable as it is reading the books.

Hi, sudiptacallingu. I have read this response over and over. Sounds so fun I almost feel like I am there with you. It also sound a lot like the experience I have each year with my family. I'm excited for you that January coming and you get to go again soon. My family looks forward to going each year to our event as well, planning for weeks and then talking about it for weeks following it. I really enjoy going to hear the authors speak about their book. I haven't experienced too many flamboyant ones, most have been humbled by people wanting to hear them discuss their writing. I hope you will start a discussion about your event and let us know what a good time you have.

I have never had the opportunity but my book angels watching over me has been featured at several book festivals so far, I have a friend that has taken them for me. As I am disabled it is pretty difficult for me to be getting out and about.

I've been to the Texas book festival and was wandering around with my mother back at an early festival and ran into a writer friend of mine and got introduced to some of her friends. Elizabeth Moon is the writer and I got introduced to Margaret Ball and another female science fiction writer.

Yeah, I've heard a lot, but only been that one time. My feet are so bad that I just can't take the walk into the fest and the walk around it. I wish I could. However, next year, PM me and we'll see if we can meet!

An Austinite! I'm sure you have heard a lot about the festival. Laura Bush's pet project. Perhaps we could meet there some time, ElicBxn. I often have time to kill while my husband is listen to authors speak. We do "tag team parenting" during the festival since our son is too young to sit still during the lectures. We also enjoy some of the events around town that are in association with the festival. It is often more fun to meet the authors in those settings than behind a signing table.

Hello makingpots. It is so nice to have a book festival. I think that it must have attracted many people who love reading. It is a good and interesting activity to enhance culture with the festival. It is a very significant thing. But I have never attended such a book festival. I have no impression that we have ever had one in our local place. Take care, friend.

We go to more food festivals than book festivals, mostly because they are more frequent. My hubby enjoys them, I'm lucky.

I have never heard of a Book Festival before let alone attend one! I would love to go to one though...Meeting authors and celebrating literature would be great! I actually met Temple Grandin at an Autism Symposium a couple of years ago and that was great!! I'd like to Meet Jenny McCarthy as well and Robert Munch...A few more as well! Wish we had these things here in Canada! ~Heavens~

The authors I would most like to meet if it were possible, are William Shakespeare and Homer. Although they are deceased, they are my most favorite authors of all time. First Shakespeare who is at the top of my list of favorite authors, and then next would be Homer.

I have never attended a book festival. But I would like to. I am sort of busy nowadays; I do not have time for these sort of things. When I find enough time, I will definitely attend a book festival. Books have always been my passion. I myself do not know how many books I have read.
