area. I looked out the door and there was a white out at PetSmart. Later on it subsided.
When I went home, I loaned some young people a scraper because our windshields were all iced up. This means there was a base of ice on the roads, no plows put any sand down anywhere. They counted on the snow on top to act like sand.
The young people were from Montreal and going back. They had their front defrosters working, but not the back ones. So I gave them my scraper.
On the way home, I kept seeing trucks and cars in the ditch. I assumed it was because they hit ice (I could see glittery looking areas on the road in my headlights). Then it happened, white outs. One after another after another. I lost count of how many. I came out of one just in time to avoid hitting a mail box! So now I don't know if they hit ice or a white out.
Now I'm worried about the three 20 something females that I gave my ice scraper to. If I had difficulty and I know these roads, what did they encounter? I hope they made it back to Canada or found some place to stay over night. The white-outs/snow squalls were halfway to my house, none that I saw prior to that, but I did see plenty of people off the road.
Have you ever hit a really bad unpredicted storm? Have you ever helped people and thought you did right by them, only to wonder if you should have done more? Have you ever thought people went off the road for one reason and then later on figure out or hear that it was probably another reason? If I had hit this weather before my Brother's (any of the three of them) houses, then I would have stayed over night in a town before the really bad part of the storm. But often, the weather is fine until a few miles past their houses. Is there an area that is always more stormy than others where you live? Have you ever had some fool tailgate you when the roads are bad? The truck behind me could have never stopped in time if I stopped fast. So I pulled off at a store and let him go by. Wonder if he was one of the truck accidents I saw later. I thought the storm was over and I was fine, but it was still going on. Have you ever stayed put somewhere to avoid driving in a storm, only to find out the storm was just a little way down the road? A 30 to 45 minute drive took me 1 1/2 hours.

My daughter and I went over to the mall to pay the cable payment on the first of the month and it was cold but no snow. There was a store across the street, Linens and Things, that was going out of business, so she said let's see what they got. While we was in there she wanted to go on into the mall area to pay her Macy's charge. We looked around for awhile, and when we came out they was having a white out. And the wind had picked up and was blowing it all over the road. I litterly could not see but about a couple hundred feet in front of me. The mall is around 10-12 miles from home.
I hate it when it does that when you are away from home, and when we turned off to come home at the exit, it totally stopped. The weather man is getting ready to come one here he said he is tracking a bigger storm for this week than what we got on Sat. that was only about an inch. But I got a feeling that he is talking about more than that, we will see, he just gave the report said major rain coming in for Tuesday, well that is better than snow, but we get most of our bad weather in an and Feb. stay safe when out on the road and be careful. You did right by loaning them your ice scraper, if more people was nice and tried to help it would be a better world out there.

You experienced similar to me. At work, fine, then white out. Then the reverse of me. Fine and then white out. You were white out and fine. Our worst weather changes from year to year. Sometimes it's Dec., sometimes Jan, etc. We never know. Rain before the ground warms up could be dangerous. Be careful.
The girls didn't want to take the scraper, but if they can't defrost the back of the car. . .. They were nice young people, unprepared, but nice. Hope they're OK.
Hope your week turns out to be less dangerous. Take care.

Yes young people tend to go out unprepared for what could happen in the winter time, guess it is because they haven't went through going to the store and getting caught in white outs and the such yet. I tend to have everything that I would need in my truck when it becomes winte. Over time we learn that especially in the winter we need to be prepared. I am sure that they was afraid that you might need it before you got to where you was going, it was a nice gesture on your part. Please be safe and make sure you got what you need for winter survival in your auto, we never know what can hold us up once the roads gets bad.

Yes I make sure I got what I need in the truck for winter, you never know when you will slide off the road and are stuck and how long it will take some one to get to you. Please people have all that it takes to keep you warm while waiting on help this winter if you should slide off the road or your auto breaks down. A blanket or really warm coat and gloves. Please be safe.

If I had known white out conditions, I would have stayed home, but it even caught the weather reporters by surprise. Last time they said conditions would be hazardous, I called into my boss and said I was staying home. I agree with you. Bad weather, stay locked inside.

Wow! 4 hours, I'd go crazy! That must be like our huge fire that we had. My white out travel at least wasn't that long. Take care and thanks for responding.

When it's been bad enough, I've stayed at my brother's, but the really bad part didn't start until a few miles past my brother. I did pull over to let a tail gaiter in a truck go around. There was a little store before the weather got bad. I was really happy that fool had gone around. He just tail gaited the next person. I don't care if you have 4 wheel drive, my little car stops faster than a truck, so BACK OFF. I should get that made into a bumper sticker. But you can't see it when it's covered with snow and needed the most anyway.

Serious PITAs and we're not talking bread either!
I've seen some good bumper stickers anti-tail gaiters. "Unless you're a hemorrhoid, get off my A." Ha, ha, like that one.
