We had our family Christmas last Saturday night at my sisters. Ever since I can remember our dad read the Christmas story from the Bible. When he passed my brother took his place and we have always read the story of the birth of Jesus....well this year it was not included in our family celebration. I was very disappointed. It's been in our family for over 60 years as part of our celebration. Is it part of yours?

No it wasn't but that does sound nice. Somethings they stop they shouldn't. That sounds like a good one. I'm mean even if it can get boring or old it is still the thing to do. You can do it with your kids. That would be really cool they would know where it came from anyway. The grandkids mite be bored or not give it a try. Your friend onlydia

No, we don't read the Christmas story at our family gatherings, but we do hear it in church. Every year it is read at church, so we get to hear it there. I should read it more than once a year. It gives me hope when I hear it, so why not read it again? lol It is kind of like Christmas carols. I wish we sang them all year long!

Hi jillhill. What a wonderful family tradition! That is so cool. To actually have family members read the Christmas story aloud is pretty great. No, my family has never done anything like that. I guess it's because we really never went to church so we just don't have that as a family base or tradition.
But it must be a really beautiful thing to do it nearly every year. You'll have to take your bible next year and make sure it gets read!

You sound like a traditionalist like myself. I love the traditions and I would have been hurt that it was not included. Why did you not say anything? Maybe other members of the family missed it too and maybe your brother just forgot. Next year you could gently remind hiom of how much it means to you all. In the meantime, why not read it yourself at home with your own family. I really understand your hurt though. Blessings and hugs and have a wonderful Christmas.

I didn't say anything because I had alrady opened my mouth about her not having a Christmas tree.....dah....isn't that one of the biggest things about Christmas? I went to put my gifts under the tree and there wasn't a tree...said she didn't have time to put it up.....because she had went out three nights in a row.....I said...well you knew for two months that we were coming....and that didn't go over well!

No we have never had the tradition of reading the Christmas story. That does seem like a very special tradition and I know if our family had done it for all those years and it was not done at the gathering it just would not seem like the holiday's to me. I hope that you or someone in your home can read the Christmas story during the holiday's this year and keep doing it and keep that tradition going.

No, because we have different religions and some do not believe that Christ is God. But we do believe that there is a God that is for all of us and in that context we celebrate Christmas. That practice is great and that should be the real meaning of the yuletide season, Love, for this is what Christ brought to us-love, thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas in advance.
