Making New Year's Resolution - effective or waste of time?

Every end of the year, some people make a personal list of New Year's Resolution. They are the ones vowed to do next year at least for a change to the better, like no more smoking, drinking, and other bad habits. However, some or most of them is being written every year, but not being accomplished...lol! Now, is making a New Year's Resolution really effective or just a waste of time? Do you think it's better not to make a list, and just do your best to be good next year?

Hi fatherblogger. No it is not. although we are not able to fulfill them all, they would serve as our guide and map for the year ahead. It would provide us with a blueprint of our short term and long term goals. I hope your holidays went great. I'll be availing of the ebook on Jan 16. My paypal is empty now because I have withdrawn for the holidays. Cheers.

Wow! That's good to hear. I'm quite sure you'll get positive results from that ebook. You'll be among the first one to know about my new money making strategy next year. Happy New Year!

It is better to make a list, so you know what you have successfully resolved and what not. From the list, you can have some evaluation and do some changes to make it easier for you to succeed on your New Year's resolutions.

It does work, although not as if one should. At least, you will be able to keep them for maybe a month or so, which is much better if you never made them. The trouble is that in order to keep the resolution, it has to be one that is easy to keep, so saying you will lose at least one pound a year is better then saying you will lose twenty. And promising to write on your novel every day except Sunday is easier to keep then saying you will complete one thousand words a day. I try to make resolutions that I have at least a chance of success, like the above. Never did the no drinking, etc. list. I found that did not work, but saying I will be a little better next year does work and I do keep them a little longer.

It all depends on the type of person you are. If you are the type that Need to write everything down and follow it to the letter, then making a list is the best way. But if you are the type of person who is not into lists or there is only one thing you want to change , then a list would be a waste of time.Me, I would make the same pledge each year, to celebrate all the Jewish holidays. Well for most years I succeeded but these days I just celebrate the High Holy ones.

Hello fatherblogger. It could be either way, I think. Maybe to make a plan for the new year's resolution is a better one as you know that whatever we do, we need to have a plan first and then we work on the plan with a more specific aim.

I have never even tried to make resolutions. I always forget about them anyway. I wish I could, well not really. I am sure there are things I need to resolve to do, like lose weight or find a work at home job. These are two things I would like to do but so far I have not be successful at doing. Oh well, maybe next year. Oh wait, it is almost next year! LOL!

I have never made a list for a new years resolution. I have told myself stuff.. something i wouldn't do, something i might try harder at, something i want to do, etc... but i usually end up failing lol i don't really do the thing.. i just try my best and do what i can. I think it is a waste of time pretty much.. most people usually don't end up sticking to there new years resolution anyway.. so why stress out and worry about something you're not even gonna stick too anyway? lol you tell yourself you are and you do good for a couple of months but then its starts getting to the point of "i'm bored" and you fail and go off track. better to just say i'll do my best and thats all you can do.

i think it is productive. most productive people make lists that they want to accomplish by a certain time, and go after it until they actually do it. i think make a list and put it on ur refrigerator or bathroom mirror or vanity dresser mirror in order to check it every morning to remind you to do it. and as u do one, check it off until u have accomplished everything on ur list.

Put it this way, making new year resolution is like giving yourself a target to complete each year. Life would be more meaningful if you have something to look forward. However, there is no harm if you cant accomplish it. So, I think it is not a waste of time. Whether one can or cannot accomplish the new year resolution, I believe it merely depends on the determination one has!

Making a "list of new year resolutions" is a total waste of time. Yeah, that's right. Let's face it, we all know how effective they are. Do people fall through and accomplish these resolutions? We all know. The reason behind is that goal setting is not something that is done once a year (and forgetting about it for a whole year just to make another list the following year). It takes practice to fall though one's resoultions. In my opinion, people must make resolutions at least once a week, if they are serious about changing any aspect of their lives.

making a new year resolution seems to be effective,as there is some percentage of sucess in it.it is better than making no resolution at all.some amount of effort goes into it.

New Years resolutions are OK providing that those who utter them as prepared to be 100% committed to see it through. There are not many who live their life always keeping their word.. :-) Derek

Sometimes I do have a resolution. But it really depends on yo as a person. If you're not motivated, then don't waste your time holding on to a resolution for the sake of having one. Most of the time, the only resolutions I keep are the ones I really want to do during the year. :)

It's a good time to stop and take stock of your life. Look for ways to improve it. A resolution may oar may not be for you a boost in the right direction. Just use it as a tool and don't beat yourself up about it.

it depends. i made a list of my new year's resolution once but it did not take effect. so i decided not to make a list the next year but still have new year's resolution and it happen... so i think it's the eagerness, the sincerity of your wish that could make it happen...

We may not say its effective, not effective or just a waste of time. Making new year's resolution is an effort we make to discipline ourselves or to change our bad attitudes. It will be effective if we focus and if we are serious in doing this and if we give enough time realizing what we did in the past. Further if you are really willing to change and renew yourself. You may not give the best of your attention fulfilling these resolution at least you've tried and you made an effort. These efforts are not a waste of time. It's really up to the person if he/she wants to change, though changing is not an easy thing to so, giving time realizing your character is one big step in adjusting for you to become a better person.
