On my way to work and back, the trees are covered with squirming black!

It's THE CROWS!!! I'd forgotten, after nearly thirty years away from my home (Ohio) how the crows congregate in December. Funny how they're not in my neighborhood, 3/4 mile away from the center of the city. Anyway, in the morning you can see them perching in the trees that have lost their leaves and it looks as if the trees are in full spring bloom, only it's black! I always turn my radio off so I can hear them cawing and cackling, it's almost like eavesdropping on a conversation. Once I get about 1/2 mile from the city's center, the crows are gone! I'm less than a mile from where the crows hang out. Why? I have bird feeder with "black oil sunflower seeds" and none of the other crap birds won't eat. I also have suet that I made with raisins, cranberries, corn meal and other good stuff. Still, the crows hang out downtown! What a mystery!

wow cool! you actually have crows near where you live. i like crows and ravens. they're like birds of mystery. i live in texas and we very seldom see them. i visited india when i was a kid and there were lots of crows there and yes, there were also more of them in the cities than the suburbs or country which i thought was rather strange. perhaps there are more food in the city? i know you put food out for them, but you might be the only one in your neighborhood who does that, whereas downtown there's food everywhere.

Any food in this downtown area is eaten by the homeless! I was amazed when I first moved here that I didn't see any homeless people or planhandlers. I'd forgotten that people here have some pride and don't want people to know they have nothing or nowhere to go. I've been away nearly 30 years, and among people that think being on food stamps is a point of pride, a badge of experience--here, it's a shameful thing. Well, anyway, I have a full bird feeder and I see starlings but no crows. I'm away during the day, working, but I've begun throwing out some bread each morning as I cross the little bridge into downtown.
