is it only me thinking so or is the globai warming increasing the frequency of the natural disasters???What some enviros are claiming is that global warming -- along with over-development and other such deleterious human activity -- is raising sea levels and reducing or eliminating the natural barriers (mangroves, coral reefs, etc.) that protect coastlines from the worst of the tsunami damage. As a result, the damage was worse than it needed to be, and will be worse yet in the next catastrophe.is it so??

Maybe if we had better sense than to BUILD right ON the shoreline too... How dumb is that?

It is dumb today to build on the shore. However the world wouldn't be what it is today without them. People built cities on the shoreline because of international trade. It wasn't practical to carry supplies from ships for miles through untamed land so they built the cities where it was accessible by large trading ships. Today it is not practical.

True, but they also either built out of stone or so it would fall apart and be rebuilt easily...

I believe the Earth is getting colder and goes through natural cycles. The average temperature has not increased in 10+ years. The flooding is caused by poor development of land. Humans think they can build roads, parking lots, cities and whatever suits their needs without any repercussion. Lets take Florida as an example. If it floods, it is a swamp. People have no business living there. Maybe the catastrophes wouldn't be as bad if people were not living so close to the danger? They might as well be living on the side of a volcano.

Even though 2008 is cooler than the past several years, it's still likely to rank as the 10th warmest year since the beginning of climate records in the 1850s.

I'm not so sure if our carbon footprint on the atmosphere has much to do with it. There were increased sunspot activity during the small period of warming. The sunspot activity has decreased and so hasn't the temperature. People usually bring up the subject of the ice caps melting when I say that it is getting colder. My explanation is this... If you bake a cake is the oven cold when you turn it off or is there residual heat? The last summer was one of the coldest that I remember. And today it is cold outside and snowing. No one brings up how cold it was last summer when promoting global warming.

There are many conflicting lines of thought on global warming and it's origins or causes. Many argue that it is due to the excesses of humankind, yet many others will argue that it is the natural evolution of the earth and would be occuring regardless of any influences we may have triggered with pollution etc. Personally, I do feel that our contributions are not helping any, but it is not the major cause of all that is going on. The earth is a massive living, breathing ecosystem that sustains itself on many levels and the natural disasters, increasing salinity issues and rising water level issues etc are the byproduct of the earth just doing what it does! We do need to be mindful of how we impact the balance of this ecosystem at a micro level, but the mainstream events we are witnessing I do not believe we are causing to any large extent.

As per the available reports and information, it appears that Global warming is taking its toll and it is effecting our daily life, directly or indirectly to an extent. We should all stand up to face the challange, it is posing and do our bit with full honesty and sincerity, e.g. we should try to save as much elecricity and water, as much we can. If each one does his part, I think, we will be able achieve something.

Planting trees is another very useful idea. By the way, I have many potted plants in my small terrace garden.

I think you are right. I agree with you that if we do not take care of this earth we will continue to have more and more natural disasters. I just heard on the BBC news that Russia had not had snow yet this winter and very little snow last winter. The problem is the bears are not hibernating because they do not have the snow to give the clues to hibernate. I do believe that it is the cause of global warming. What will happen to the bears of they do not hibernate? No one really knows for sure.

I guess, you are right with what you are thinking. In general, there's a domino effect to the kind of stuff we do towards our environment. In so many ways we are interrelated and we affect one way or another the way things function. Like you pointed out, the absence of natural barriers somehow has increased the risk of a more disastrous tsunami or flood.

yes unfortunately things will get worse, man has got to stop polluting the air with carbon dioxide and other fossil fuels, even the artic is melting and animals are dying including the polar bears who are starving right now.

I believe all these are signs of the end time. In my country, before it doesn't rain all year round but it rains almost every three days, even in my place of work, lightening damaged some of our equipments. The intensity of the sun has increased by hundred percentage and we are now planting trees are a measure to avert being scunch by the sun. infact it calls for concern!

Yes it is true, according to studies, global warming has been the reason for the the frequent natural calamities the world is experiencing nowadays. I just hope every one would be concern enough to do his/her share in being environment friendly in our actions and in all the things we use at home.

If we keep our eyes open on this concern, whether we like it or not, be it directly or indirectly felt the effects of global warming can be felt. In my place for instance, I would notice that there are instance whereby the weather becomes so hot when it is rainy season, and it suddenly becomes so cold at night while it wasnt even raining in the morning, you know things like that. Its sad and I agree with you one hundred percent on what you posted above. We can make a difference in our small ways.

I am afraid you are right, just surviving on this planet is going to become a major problem for the human race. We know this from the past when the earth has experienced warming. I think they have ice studies back 2 million years. I don't always get the numbers right, but this must be on the Internet.

I think and believe so, riyasam. Global warming to me takes weather to extremes and such. Everything will be more intense and more pronounced. Droughts, floods, etcetera... much colder or hotter weather... changes and such. I mean, we were feeling like it was still summer in California the first week of December. This was the first time I've ever seen people wearing tank tops and short shorts around this time.

Thats what the environmental scientists and action groups says. Great lot of irreversible damages has been already done to environment for centuries. Most responsible element for this damages are human - for their civilization. Today's yahoo article says that since 2003 more than 2 trillion tons of arctic ice has been melt. None going to challenge as none will be able to measure same. But the truth is that environment is getting damaged more and more, global warming increasing and as a result more sever typhoon and flooding occurring. If the global warming continues and polar ice caps keeps on melting then within few hundred years sea water level will increase to such a height that many low lying countries (land height very close to sea level) will sink under water.

nooo riya....veryone is thinking about global warming now a days and eveyone is eually concerned as you are by the effects of global warming... i think we all should do something in this regard to stop or atlest lower down the pace of it and its high time that we act on it...wad say??? there is lot of climate variablity in the sky and also u must hv noticed it...we not getting our loved seasons on time...isnt it?? sea level is rising and its sure gonna be tuff time for us to catter to this problem...we need to use the vehicles less and it should be timely purified...not one but all should take care of this and afterr all we all hv to live here on this sweet earth...dont we want the future generation to be healthy and enjoy nature

well we mus awared to that. we must help those enviromentalist groups to educates those people that we must protect our planet from global warning. that we should do some action about his kind of problem. well we have one planet and we must love it and protect it like ourselves.

I believe it is, it brings forth the damage from Ice Age that happened in my opinion, where the icy border started to break, and crumble which led to a flood. Also, it is somewhat like what happened earlier last century, there was this time called the dust bowl, where everything was covered in dust. The reason for this was that people were getting land, and tearing away all the trees, what we did not take into account was the amount of oxygen that trees give us naturally. Now days, people will tear down trees still, but we have laws in place, where we have to restore nature. Even though to be honest, I don't see that happen much.
