Butter or margarine?

Which is it for you, and why? Do you use real butter or a substitute? Personally we don't put ANY spread on a sandwich but what about cooking? Do your Christmas cakes and mince pies taste the same with a butter substitute? As for health, for the amount we eat in our house we might as well have best butter and enjoy the real thing. What's your take on this?

Well, adding butter in cooking will eventually make the food aroma smell better. Margarine can be subsidize but not as good as butter. I am Chinese and we use pork lard. In chinese cooking, we believe by use lard, the meal will taste better. We also seldom use Butter or Margerine in daily cooking. We use normal vegetable cooking oil. By adding sesame oils, the food will be more delicious and taste better. Cooking without oil is of course healthy, such as blanching, boiling and other method. To reduce fattening oil, I think the best substitute is "olive oil" for cooking. Stay healthy!

I really prefer real butter - it tastes better, when it's for sandwich spread or baking. Butter substitutes and margarines are just not good enough!

I would never let margarine in our house, much more in our food. Margarine is horrible, unhealthy stuff. I will only use real butter in anything. I'm not into cooking these days, but when I do, it will definitely be butter, no substitute.

I usually use butter and mostly for cooking, not as a a spread or anything. I sometimes use butter on toast, but not all that much. It's actually cheaper to use butter than anything else.

for sandwiches and popcorn i use butter. for cooking suppers, i use oil (usually olive oil). when i bake, i normally use margarine or oil. But when i make shortbread cookies and icing, i always use butter.

For me I use Margararine for cooking and butter for sandwhiches etc. I really don't like margarine for anything else dont taste the same to me as butter does. But that's just me.
