Religion and women - does 'God' hate women??

Here is the big question! I HAVE to ask this because I have been involved in too many religion-based threads that discuss to some degree some restrictions that are only dumped on WOMEN. Why is this? Does God hate women?! If not, then why are so many cultures so backwards and the genders are not equal? Even in America women have had trouble gaining equality! When I look back at religious books, it seems that women were PROPERTY! They were bought and sold and forced to 'bear mens' children' and that was about it. It seemed like if they did anything wrong, their husband and husband's family could beat them, stone them, whatever they wanted to do! If they couldn't bear children, again, the man could 'get rid of his wife'. There are no such provisions to benefit women at all. If her husband is horrible, she can't do anything. She is supposed to submit and be quiet and do whatever the heck he wants! Then you have the cultures where the men can do practically anything they want. They can wear what they want, they can marry or date whom they CHOOSE. They can get an education, they can get a good job, they can drive, travel, etc. The WOMEN cannot wear whatever they want. They aren't allowed to talk to men or be friends with them. Their marriages are arranged, either via a man's choice and his family arranging it with her family or just by his parents and her parents. These women are prevented from continuing their education, they are prevented from working, not allowed to drive, can't purchase things like a car or get an apartment or a house - they are looked at like they are second class - worth NOTHING without a man! These women end up being completely co-dependent on a man - and the man MAY or MAY not be a gentleman who cares about her. He may be an awful tyrant who makes her walk 3 feet behind, never speak, avert her eyes, etc. I really have to wonder WHY women were considered 'second' back in God's day, when he was around rubbing elbows with the common folk here on earth. I wonder why he or she did not call us EQUAL from DAY ONE! It would solve a lot of problems - keeping men from being jerks and giving women who truly think they are second class citizens an infusion of courage and confidence! I am TIRED of this. And I don't care what God's intention was, if he or she meant for women to be treated so horribly - shame on him! No matter which God you believe in, this is horrific and nasty. What do you think? Is this just our perception or did we as a society cause it?

hmm yea same.. here... in my culture.. all parents want sons... to carry on their name... i want a daughter... There is this indian tribe.. where woman are treated like $hit.... like they marry a woman.. and wen they get fed up with her... the man just gives a betel leaf and a coin in it to her.... and that means they are divorced... and then the man can marry any girl.. is that horrible or wat.... There is another place in north eastern india where matriarchs rule the family... the woman are the heads of the family and the properties are transferred to the woman.... even the men marry into the woman's family.. and take the woman's name.. lol...

That first example IS horrible, this is why it's so important for people to see actual freedom in practice. I guess some people wouldn't realize what was going on if they didn't see women experiencing equality elsewhee. Of course the MEN don't like that because they WANT to be more important and in control. UGH. Now that's interesting about the place in india - see I don't so much want it to go the OTHER way either. I simply wish that men and women would view and treat each other as equals, in all societies.

I Don't Know Other Culture & Beliefs But as a Muslims I Tells You Please Read it Carefully & Cool Minded Don't Think About False Propagandas I Only Ask You to Think Carefully With your Cool Mind & Heart.Listen "Islam is the Great Religion That Gives the Women Protection & Strong Her.There is No Difference Between Women & Men in Islam But for a Goodness of a Person Makes Him Superior to others. So Do You Know??? Before Islam Peoples Think likes You "Women is a Property" But Islam Rejected all False thinking Islam teach a Guys to Marry with Women If He Have a Money & in first Give the Money Because its the Right of Women She Marry With You Than Take care whole Life The Only Duty of Women is Islam Just to Pray & Take Care our Husband & Child & I Think there is nothing hard to take care your child because you already Love Your Child blindly So Its nothing any hard i think & take care You husband I think its the easy Because as a Human You Don't care someone??? If He will give you anything like Food & protection & Satisfied her & if The Women don't due our workout I think she is the worst ever in Islamic Thoughts there is the Huge Load of Men Likes a Money & Providing anything." If you examine the religious thinking of societies in which women are degraded I'm thinking you will find the answer. In each and every case, Men control the Religion and Accept the Power that comes along with it. Take the Roman Catholic Church for example. Just last year the Pope proclaimed that women could not be Priests. He declined to give details. Just recently, the Canadian Supreme Court upheld a law that gives women Equal Rights with men. This ruling went as far as to allow women to go topless in public, even as men already have this right. The exception being that women are not to cause a public nuisance by their toplessness. ( Only in Canada, You Say?)

If you will look at the God in the Bible, you will see that there is a great appreciation of women like Ruth and Mary. But the Bible also shows that there is a distinct difference in the roles men and women play in life. For example. husbands are tasked to lead the family. Does this degrade women? No. For God everyone is equally important and He loves men and women equally. The roles in life are just different. God even made men and women different to complement each other.

2 responses to your question - yes, looking at history, religion does, but God does not. I'll try to speak from a biblical Christian perspective. Most people think the women's lib movement began when women first won rights to vote. Well, if you'd accept Jesus Christ as speaking for God, He was quite liberating for that Samaritan woman by the well, who had 5 husbands and was cohabiting with one more by the time she and Jesus met. In their culture, and at that time, it was taboo for men to talk to women, and a Samaritan at that. (Jews didn't associate with Samaritans) But Jesus initiated the conversation by asking for water from her during one of His travels, and had a serious talk after that. You can read all about this in the Bible (New Testament), book of John chapter 4 verses: 4-42. Try BibleGateway.com if you don't have a copy of a Bible. And if you accept the Bible as God's word to man, there are other passages that attest to the fact that men and women are looked upon as equals in God's sight. Galatians 3:28 talks about the NON-EXISTENCE of religious/cultural, economic, and gender differences with God. It was Christ who said if you know the truth, it'll set you free. What can be more freeing than knowing this? As far as arranged marriages go, I think it's various societies that created that, not God. Abraham did somewhat arrange for Isaac's marriage to Rebekah, though it was his servant who really made the choice. Jacob married twice, the first was his father-in-law's choice, the other his own. Esau married against his parents' wishes. Joseph was given an Egyptian wife by the Pharaoh. Moses made his own choices regarding his wives. And so on, and so forth. Nowhere in the New Testament, as far as I know, was there a teaching about arranged marriages. The Bible does say the wife need to be submissive to her husband, etc.. Written by the apostle Paul, who's always been controversial, it was an order made to keep peace & order in the church. Back then, men and women were seated separately, and the latter tended to shout at their husbands when asking about something, during the service, therefore disrupting it. It could be about anything, from a household task, or something about the sermon. In the household, it's accepted that men are the heads, anyways. And men, children, elders were given directives too, by the way. Texts to read are 1 Corinthians 14, 1 Timothy 2, Titus 2, I Peter 3 (all in the New Testament). Any references to the woman as the weaker partner doesn't mean inferiority, just different. A preacher I listen to recently likened this gender difference to women being silk, and men as denim. OK, this has gotten so long. I hope it explained a little about how God sees men and women.
