Do You Carry Your Social Security Card?

I was filling out some forms for my unemployment insurance and the receptionist ask for my social security card. I was not told that I needed to bring this with me. I know my number by heart. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. A dishonest person who has your Social Security number can use it to get other personal information about you. Identity thieves can use your number and your good credit to apply for more credit in your name. Then, they use the credit cards and do not pay the bills. You may not find out that someone is using your number until you are turned down for credit or you begin to get calls from unknown creditors demanding payment for items you never bought Someone illegally using your Social Security number and assuming your identity can cause a lot of problems. I don't carry my Social Security Card. I have it in a safe place with my important papers. My question is do you have your Social Security Card in a safe place or do you keep it with you in your wallet?

There ae times when we are asked to show the card as proff. Some airlines now ask for the SS card to be shown for flights. HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I've known my SS # by heart ever since I was a child. I have had it laminated and carry it with me at all times. I also have never lost my wallet. And when in a large crowd I have my wallet in a front pocket as well for safety reasons. HAPPY HOLIAYS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I have mine in my wallet, but it needs to go back into the filing cabinet. I was horrified the other day to find Hubby's Social Security card in an old wallet. I was going to throw it away!!!

I always carry my card with me. It is just the way that I have always done things. There are things that come up where they do ask for it and so I just keep it on me.Theres always a risk if your purse or wallet gets stolen but you should always contact the office and let them know right away if this happens.

I know my card is in the house, I just don't know where. It doesn't matter, though, since I know my number.

Here in canada our cards are called Social Insurance Numbers (SIN Card). I always carry mine on me. I find I keep better track of it if I have it in my wallet rather than in the house where the kids might one day find it. I have lost it once in my life and it realy wasn't my fault lol it was before I started working and my mother kept it with her in her "Important Papers". I have had it in my wallet ever since then.

I keep mine in my wallet. I'm very careful about where my purse and wallet are when I'm out and about. I'm very careful as to who sees what and why. I've been very lucky so far and haven't had any problems with identity theft and hope that I never have that problem. All of my important documents are shredded on the spot. Never are they just thrown into the trash can without being shredded first.

I don't carry my SS card with me unless I know I am going to need it. It is a pretty safe bet to say you will need it when applying for credit, starting a new job, or opening a bank account. I probably would not have thought to bring it with me to apply for unemployment. You are right, it is not a good idea to carry it with you. Credit cards can be canceled if you lose your wallet, but your SS number can be stolen quite easily.

Hello, I filed my unemployment online, that avoided me from having to go down there and everything I needed was at home, so it was not a problem to get the needed documents. Actually, since I have been unemployed I carry my social security card with me always. Before, when I was working I did not carry it. I carry it with me because I never know what may happen, and if I needed it I have it.

I personally carry mine with me. Mostly for liability reasons (safety from a mother who wants to kidnap me). Though I do keep it hidden, I am often told I shouldn't carry it with me. Thing is, I don't let people near my wallet, nor would I be pick-pocketed easily since I have a chain attached to my wallet.

they say you should never carry it with you, unless you need it for something. the reason is if you lost it or someone steal it, they can actully get credit cards, and loans in your name. then it takes years to fix it

I carry my social security card for one reason. I just can't remember my number so any time I need to know it, it's with me. Pretty simple. Happy Mylotting!

I am often surprised at how people offer up their personal information so readily. When I was employed by a company that provided medical equipment/services we were supposed to get their SS# for our records. Many people refused to give this information. The VA only requests the last 4 numbers in your SS# and I feel that is what is truly necessary unless you need it for tax purposes. A copy of your SS# should never be necessary. Carrying this information with you can be problematic if your purse or wallet is stolen or misplaced.

hello Chevee, You are right, we should keep our Social Security Card in a safe place. It never occured in my mind that others can use it in my behalf and can use my identity. I always bring SSS card with me for I might need it anytime. But now, I should memorize my SSS number and keep my card in a safe. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I carry it in my billfold all the time, I probably should take it out, in fact I think I may have my husbands in there too. I know I never get asked for it, and I do know my number by heart. I'm just afraid that one of these days I'll need it, and I won't have it with me, but on the other hand I don't want to risk it getting stolen either and cause a whole lot of other problems..hmm, I'll have to think about this...Have a good day

I keep mine with me as well as my childrens. I do not like having them with me, but it seems now a days I have been having to show them for various thing..now even for a drivers liscense for my daughter. I am wondering even if we kept our cards home..with everyone needing the numbers, it doesnt seem like its going to matter the numbers are going to be out there. I just dont like how they are doing things now days.
