No-No Holiday Foods

I guess this could be for any holiday. Such as for Halloween. I hate candy corn, while my entire family loves it. But since it is Christmas time, I was thinking about the traditional food items that are routinely eaten this time of year. Or at least in America, and I know some other countries as well. Things like fruit cake, egg nog, or cranberry sauce. And yes, cranberry sauce isn't just for Thanksgiving. I don't have an issue with any of those Christmas type foods. But is there a food or drink item that only comes around on a certain holiday, and you absolutely wish it didn't?

Fruit cake for me is right up there with tripe, parsnips and liver., Normally it doesn't bother me because I just don't buy it. If I receive one for a gift, after thanking the giver and they've left...it just goes into the trash. My grandmother, when she was living loved them. She's the only person I've ever met who did. Every year she ended up with several..lol. I'm also not a fan of egg nog, but if it's heated and served with rum or souther comfort, whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, it's fine.

You are welcome to them! I don't mind their chicken tender strips once in a while, but that's about it. Usually if I'm gonna eat all that grease, I'd rather have it in the form of fudge...lol

Yes, nasty looking stuff if you've ever seen it. I'm still trying to figure out what chitlins are (never saw them before moving down here), but I'm almost afraid to ask....

Hi AmbiePam, Firstly what is corn candy please? Secondly the only seasonal food I really cannot stand is brussel sprouts but I still cook them as one of my daughters likes them, I have never tried eggnogg and also do not eat marzipan so the fruit cake is ok but I pull the outer section with the marzipan and icing off. Other than that in the summer the one food I won't eat is cucumber, love salad bu not cucumber. Seasons Greetings. Huggles. Ellie :D

This is candy corn. - While my mom loves this stuff, I hate it. It is plentiful around Halloween.
Candy corn is basically sugar, but I just don't like it. It's usually orange, with a yellow stripe in the middle, but it can vary.

No sireeee. Most of the foods at Christmas are ones I wish were around all year long. I love fruitcake. I love eggnog and pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce and cranberry nut bread. I love the flavored creams only available at this time of year - like peppermint mocha. Yummy. I love candy canes. Doggone, I wish this stuff was available year round.

I hate plumamouse. That is a Mennonite fruit dish made with dried fruit. I do not like light fruit cake, and it seems that is the only kind we get around here unless I walk all the way to Safeway. I hate carrot pudding, that is a Prairie substitute for plum pudding and will not get any because thank goodness my daughter-in-law is allergic to carrots. I do not care that much for ham, but I love shortbread, mincemeat, and cranberries. That is the English in me.

We pretty much eat and drink whatever we want to all year long. I guess the turkey is about the only thing that we do eat one time per year. It is very filling though.

Well, AmbiePam, I just cannot think of a thing except maybe hog jowls on New Year's day (used to season the black-eyed peas in the deep south); too much fat, yucky! I like pretty much everything. I try not to let any particular time of year or holiday define what's for dinner; I have been known to serve macaroni and cheese with hotdogs and a side of green beans on Thanksgiving just because that's what everbody wanted. Thought provoking question though.

The only ones that I don't like are the cranberry sauce and the egg nog.. I love certain fruit cakes, I make one with orange slice candy, nuts, dates, and coconut, it is so good, or so I think.. Also, last year a neighbor gave me a dish of Cranberry salad, which was made with oranges, nuts and a few other ingredients and it was really good.. I used to buy a can of cranberry sauce and displayed it on the table along with the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, it was tradition, but no one ever tasted of it, so I quit buying it and no one has complained yet.. As for the egg nog, I don't think that I have ever tasted it, but I don't like it anyway, I can't stomach the thought of drinking it but I don't know why, I just can't.. As for everything else, all of it is fair game when I finally get to the table.. MERRY CHRISTMAS

You know, I think the least eaten food during Christmas at our table is the cranberry sauce too. I don't know why we even still have it.

Noooo I love the holiday food. I guess for the size of my waist line, I could wish away cheese balls, hot cider, apple pie, but what kind of world would it be without them?

Yes, in my adopted country they always serve a curried goat on special occasions. I hate it. with a passion. I did taste it once but the taste of th meat was too strong for me. Yet, at every holiday there it is everywhere except in my house. I have never cooked it in my home although my husband and children loved it. The children will now cook it in my house but they know better than to offer it to me and they will cook a different dish for me. The odd thing is that they won't eat lamb - which I adore. good posting. Blessings

Yes, it is pork on New Years day..I don't eat pork, but my husband still wants his pork and sauerkraut on New Years day..The house smells and though the sauerkraut is healthy, the pork is not, no matter how lean it is..So I will be making it I guess, but eating something different..

Well, I've never really developed a taste for eggnog, although I get it every year. My husband loves it. Years ago, I would have said I could live without candied yams but, since I started making them myself, I've developed a taste for them. Hmmm, now that you mention it, I don't like fruitcake, either. Until recently, I always had a big sweet tooth but never could stand fruitcake! Luckily, my mother couldn't either. The only time I'd have one for Christmas was if someone gave me one (someone who didn't know me very well. lol). I think that's one of those things that you either love or hate. I can tolerate eggnog, but not fruitcake!

I'm not a fan of ham. I understand that most people don't have any qualms with it but it makes me sick to think about for some reason. Of course its always at our Christmas dinner and even Thanksgiving this year.
