In my country, most Filipinos believe that how you start the new year will be your luck for the coming year. So some typical traditions were, 1) You should fill your pockets with coins and you should shake them at 12am so they won't be empty for the whole year 2) You should have at least 12 meals set on the table to make sure you will have food for the year 3) Make noise to scare away bad luck spirits that's why we greet the new year with firecrackers! These traditions were I think borrowed but we have followed in the same beliefs. 4) Jump so you would grow taller 5) Keep all doors in the house open including lights and cabinet to welcome the good spirit in. Then after the firecrackers are done, the whole family would have a midnight meal and get merry. What is your belief or traditions in your country or family.

My family may be conservative but I'm so glad we're not THAT traditional :D I spent my New Year's eve sick - my allergies acted up that I couldn't finish one song on the Karaoke without having a fit! But I did get a 96 with a Parokya ni Edgar song, mind you :D We only have one tradition - to spend New Year's Eve dinner together as a family but even that is fading away because of the differing work schedules that me and my siblings have. Thanks for the comment on my discussion!

In my family in Denmark we have a couple of traditions about New Year's Eve. There are two things which we always watch on tv. One of them is the Queen's New Year speach and the other one a short film called "Dinner for one". We don't have a traditional New Year dinner in my family, but we always decorate the table and we usually place a couple of table bombs on the table. Another tradition is the hats and during the dinner everyone wears a funny hat. At midnight we drink champagne and light the fireworks. A little later we eat a special cake called "Kransekage". I don't think that there is a lot of superstition or beliefs connected the New Year, at least not in my family, but in the old days there was a lot of superstition and they had certain traditions which were supposed to predict the future. One of the traditions consisted of throwing a spoonful of porridge on the floor. Girls who weren't married yet would throw a spoonful of porridge on the floor (one spoonful each) and then they would send the dog into the room. The girl who had thrown the porridge which the dog ate at first, would be the first woman to get married in the next year - according to the superstition.

Thanks for sharing. That is a very interesting idea, perhaps I should suggest to my family that we should wear funny hats on New Year's Eve. The dog eating the porridge is also interesting :) Happy New Year!
