are you addicted to your car??? do you drive when it's right there??? we have a convenience store right through the apartments, across a little side street, and through another parking lot. we use it for all the non grocery store essentials......beer, cigs, TP, and beer. yet there are several people that just can't get there unless they're in their car. (wow! there, they're and their all in a row) i mean you could probably walk there and back by the time someone found their keys, unlocked their car, etc. it's maybe a 5 minute walk if you CAN'T decide which beer to get!!! so how about it??? are you in your car???

I had a car a few years ago and it was the biggest source of stress in my life. I've never been happier that it broke down. Now I ride my bike, I've lost tons of weight and I can honestly say that I don't miss it one bit. The internal combustion engine has seen its day, time to move on and find better ways of getting around.

No, I am most definitely NOT IN MY CAR! I hate my car - I avoid it whenever I can. I have to use it once a fortnight to go and do the bigshopping ... apart from that, I prefer someone else to drive. There used to be a lady two houses from us who DROVE her two fat-arsed children around the block to the school. They definitely could have walked there by the time she'd strapped them in, put the bags in the back, etc. I used to feel astounded watching her set off in the mornings ... but what can you do?

good for you guy, people have definitely become too dependent on their cars, that's what made me think of this, we have a little market across the street and i'll see people packing the kids in the car just to drive somewhere that takes a minute and a half to walk to.

I rather walk, than bike, than take a car. However, when is cold, car is my first preference. I am not polar like you my friend. I was born to have fun on sunny beach..... Somehow I end up in the coldest city on the planet during the winter and I love my car during winter days.. I would walk during the day and when is not freeeeeeeeeeeezing cold...

Barron Wisconsin is the coldest town on the planet. plus i worked in the packing dept. of a turkey processor, so i basically worked in a refrigerator, 36 degrees.....then you would go outside to smoke and it was like -10.. those were some fun times. and yeah....walking's great.

Well I am a professional driver in that I am an interstate truck driver and have been for many years now. That means generally I drive for 5 or 6 days a week in the busy times and can spend most of those days a long way from home. It all depends on where the load I have on has to be delivered to but I have a licence to drive road trains (3 trailers). Sometimes I only have 2 trailers but never just a single one and with more than a single trailer, it means I will be travelling some distance. It also means that I will be fully loaded each way. However when I am at home I do not drive much at all. Okay I might drive the tractor around the farm when I need to work up the ground of something like that or I might drive the old utility when we are picking the fruit and vegetabls that are ready. The one thing I do not do is drive the car when we need something from down the street or shops, unless of course the item is heavy. If I go down there then I either walk or ride the bike, depending on how much spare time I have available and what I am going for. There are a few reasons why I don't drive when I am at home. One is that after driving for 12 to 14 hours a day for either 5 or 6 days, I need a bit of a break from driving. Another is that I can always do with the exercise I get from walking or riding the bike. Finally it costs money to start the car and drive a couple of kms just to get something that is probably not necessary for me to survive. It is money ill-spent when there are alternative means of transport to get where I need to go or in other words I am to miserable with my money. lol We too know people who will walk nowhere at all and will get in their car to drive half a kilometre for something. It takes them longer to get the keys, get in the car, start it up, drive to where they want to go and than park the car than it would if they were to walk that distance.

If you can get a bike to ride sconibear you will find it great exercise. I do recommend a couple of things though. First use the stationary one in the bedroom to loosen up those leg muscles before venturing onto the road. At least if you do that then you won't get a mile from home and the legs refuse to pedal anymore, uou won't find yourself limping home. The other thing is to get a helmet and wear it when you are our riding. That is just in case some of those people in their cars get a bit close because at least the helmet gives you some protection and knowing that you are less likely to fall off the bike.

i would guess walking is a nice change of pace for you. one of these days i'm going to get me a bike......i have one in the bedroom, but it's one of those ones that doesn't go anywhere.....and doesn't get rode very often.

No car right now - loaned it to my son...who needed it for more essential stuff than I did. But I do miss it! Not having a car restricts me in what I can do in the day. But yep, we have all become far too addicted to cars and in some ways if you suddlenly lose you car you realise that you have to pace yourself more towards local activities which is actually better potentially in terms of developing the local community as you tend to create more friends who live nearby. When I do have my car I have to park it about 5 minutes walk away from where I live and this is actually quite a good disincentive to just assuming one will get into it for every small journey. There are quite a few journeys where even when I have the car I do not use it as it is actually quicker and easier to do them by foot. But then I guess I am lucky as I have reasonable access to basic shops within 5 minutes walk of me. Some people wouldn't be able to get their basic groceries without access to a car, specially if there are no public transport links nearby.

No I am not addicted to my car. It is a means of transport for me but I prefer wlaking if I had to go for short distances. I keep healthy that way.

I walk just about everywhere when the weather is nice. I would rather walk than drive. I don't understand why people would take their car to go a block or two, unless their going be bring home too much to carry.

I live near a store and I try to walk even tho the gas prices are down. For me it is about a 15 min walk. I take my car if the weather is horrible or if I will have a lot to carry back. For just the basics...it's better to walk.

yeah, i know what you mean. if you have to carry a lot, or if the weather is bad then walking can be a drag.

I need my car, unfortunately because I have multiple health problems that preclude walking more than a few hundred feet, the further I walk, the worse I become. I can stroll around the grocery store but could not walk there and back. I would love to be able to be active. I certainly would use a bicycle which is another alternative to walking if time if a consideration as it tends to be faster. The city I live in tends to be small (unfortunately with long steep hills though) and when I was younger I did bicycle when the weather was nice. What I would like for the summer would be a scooter or electric scooter. I think the electic scooter, either four wheeled or two wheeled would be an ideal alternative to a car, but I do not know if I could afford it.

i guess if you have problems getting around, then nobody can fault you for driving. i hope you can get your scooter someday. i know down here in the US, some of the scooter manufactures like "HoverRound" work with Medicaid to help pay for some or all your costs, the 4 wheeled ones not the 2. i don't know if they do that where you're at, but you could call some scooter manufactures and check.
