Should you cage, chain on neck or let your dogs free to roam?

As dog owners, we have our own way of taking care of them especially when it comes to providing their living space. So what do you think, should you cage, chain on neck or let your dogs free to roam?

Free to roam in a fenced in backyard, unless your neighborhood is one where ALL dogs roam free. I have a friend at work that has a neighborhood like that. If chained, I'd prefer a harness so the pup isn't choking on the collar every time they try to "break free."

I think putting harness to your dogs is a good idea if you would chain them, that way they don't choke themselves. I really feel sorry for chained dogs when i see them choke when they get excited or bark on someone.

Yes, I would take care of my pet, with cage, chain on neck, so it can be identify as a home dog from street dog. it will give an extra protection from outsiders. also it will give an good look

I would never let a dog roam free here because we live in a city and it's illegal but we had a Lab that we let out of the house without a lease and she never left the property but I trained here from the time she was six weeks old. She was also a dog that wasn't the slightest bit aggressive. However I would never take here off the property without a leash on and I never took her off the leash unless we where home. She was always a house dog and never stayed outside on a chain. I would not have a dog if I had to chain it or put it in a cage. It's either in the house with us or we won't have a dog.

I live in a small town and I know that they frown upon your dogs running loose. But when 3 of our dogs go out side we do not leash them. We do go out with them so they are not roaming far, just in our yard. But we do have a dog that stays outside most of the time and we do have him on a chain and in a pen.

first , your dog should NEVER run free unless it is in a totally fenced in yard, for its safety and your peacse of mind. Always walk your dog on a leash, 6 foot, not any longer for its safety and good manners and consideration for others. If you have to do anything to your dog when you leave to go to work etc. USE A PEN/KENNEL/CAGE - NEVER - NEVER chain your dog. It causes mean ness a severly depressed animal and face it you would never like a chain around your neck if your dog left you.. Remember DOG is GOD spelled backwards.. If the world gets in your way ------ Have a nice day

I have 2 dogs that are about 65-75 pounds. They are indoor dogs and are free to roam the house. I let them roam free when I take them outside to the fenced in yard, but I leash them when I take them out for walks or into the public. I like taking them to off leash dog parks so that they can socialize with other dogs. I no longer have a dog park where I live so I haven't been able to take them for a while. It kind of sucks. Anyway, caging a dog is sort of cruel, unless it's a really huge kennel and they are let out a few times a day to run around freely. I think it's even worse to chain a dog to a tree or something like that. They can easily get tangled or hang themselves. It's actually quite dangerous. Being free is the best option in my opinion.

our newest dog we got about a year or so ago and when we first got him he would run off all the time,so we kept him tied up most of the time but finally my grandma just let him off the rope to run and he has been a good dog ever scence that day.

I think it depends on where you live. I have two dogs, Yorkies, small ones. One 2lbs and one 4lbs. My Parents house is big, and they have a lot of room to roam as they please. They are also trained to go to the bathroom, so I don't have to worry about that either. they are inside dogs, most of the time. They haven't been on a cage in there lives, nor do I plan on putting a chain around there necks.

I really don't do any of those things..My dogs are inside with me. they have the run of the house. when they go out they are put put into the back yard which is fenced int- they are free to run around but they are not free to roam that is just asking for trouble. Roaming dogs are likely to get hit by a car or attacked by another dog. If I were to take my dogs anywhere they are put on a leash which is usually attached to a harness and not their collars. But I Do not Chain them up outside unless their is an emergency.

I would never cage my dog, as it is brutal. I can put a chain on his neck sometimes when i am taking him outside. I shall let my dog roam around freely in my home.

Dogs should be let to roam free. As long as you're training them right, they will know their space. My dog, for instance, doesn't even step into the bathroom,I didn't want him drinking from the toilet, so I trained him not to enter since he was 2 months old. Cages, or Kennels, are actually a very valuable tool, and they are far from being brutal, as someone posted. Not only because it teaches them about their own space at a young age, but because if you ever need to move with the dog, you'll probably need to use one. Trust me, it's far easier to teach a puppy that being in a cage for a while is fine, than trying to take a ten hour flight with an adult dog that has never been put in one. It's in the best interest for the dog, to make you able to travel with it over long distances. Unless you think it's better to leave the dog behind. I'm already rambling, so let me wrap this up. Dogs should also be on a leash whenever you take them out. Even if your dog never leaves your side while unleashed. It prevents accidents from happening. However, while in your own home, dogs should be roaming free. Look at it this way: If you're taking away some of the dog's freedom because of its own safety, then it's fine. If you're doing it because of your own comfort, get a different pet. Like gold-fishes or something boring like that. Rich
