I have, within the last couple of years, become very interested in tracing my family's history. I have very little information about anyone that goes beyond my grandparents but know a little. Have you ever done a family tree and if so how big was it? Any good geneology websites you can suggest? If not, have you ever wanted to?

It appears quite an amusing idea, I have not tried it but I read it somewhere that it is great fun searching for your family tree and if you succeed in your effort, it could produce wonderful results. No idea about any website as such.

I think it would be fun too. Could you imagine the people you may be related to distantly? I would love to try it. Thanks for the response.

Yes, it would be fun, provided we could spare some extra time for this project. Best of Luck to you, please let me know your results, when done with.

No I have never done my family tree and to my knowledge now has anyone else in the family. One of the things is that my parents migrated to Australia when I was very young and just after the end of World War II. They did keep in contact with their families back in Europe but none of their children spoke anything other than English. We do not actually know how to contact anyone there either. Another thing is that although our surname/family name is very unusual here in Australia we believe it is a bit like "Smith" in our country of birth. lol My favourite brother and sister-in-law do have some contact with relatives who migrated to the US and Canada after the war. My brother did meet one of the Canadian relations many years ago and strangely enough it was during the Vietnam era and they were both on leave in Hong Kong at the time. They lost contact though but have since re-established it through the wonders of email and the internet. They email each other fairly regularly and so are able to keep us updated on their news. The relations on the North American continent have met and generally try to get together every year or two. They also have no contact with any of the family from our country of birth. Some distant relations of my partner did their family tree a few yeas ago. They had a reunion in 2005 but we were unable to attend that time as we couldn't afford it. But recently we received a letter asking if anyone was interested in another reunion in 2010 (next year) and we will possibly attend that. It does depend on the time of year of course but they did ask for anyone to note down if there was a specific time they could not attend, so we are hopeful. There are a couple of geneology websites but my partner has them and she is at work right now. I will get them from her and send you a pm with the details but it might be a few days as I will be away from home tomorrow for anywhere between 1 and 5 days. Yes, working again and maybe I will get in a few long trips as the money for them is great.

Thank you in advance for the websites. I done a quick search of surnames one time and saw that my ancestors had migrated from Ireland. Then another that showed England. We even had a family crest.lol I thought that was neat. Good luck and take care while your on your road trips. I look forward to hearing from you when you get back.

I recommend ancestry.com. There is a fee, but before you do, interview everyone in your family, ask for dates, records, photos, cemeteries where buried, churches where married, baptized, etc., hospitals, etc. I went back three generations on my own and found that we are cousins of the famous and rich Vanderbilt family. The funny thing is that a colleague of mine found out the same, too, so we found out we are sort of related. Cool, huh? Also, many towns and cities have records that are open. Newspapers can have obits, births, weddings, anniversaries and other information. Start saving all of the stuff you have to pass onto future generations, too.

That is cool! Thanks for the advice on this. I had a researcher try to get in touch with me that was researching their own surname and I could barely tell him a thing. It kinda interested me then and I've been considering doing some research myself. Thanks for the site.
