Especially in todays economic climate would you feel obliged to go in if asked or would you say no I have already made plans?

Hello again, It depends, if I made plans with my family and they were already looking foward to that day, I wouldn't go in. I make not to answer the phone. Or if he called my cell phone I tell him that I'm at Disneyland already or the further places, San Diego or even Vegas, that way I know I won't be able to make on time. let him call someone else. But if I was just taking the day and doing nothing I would go in.

Hello Again Kaleegirl, LOL. It was a ME day but I value my ME time and was looking forward to doing what I wanted for a change, selfish I know, bu in a good way. I will go in because it is only me that can deal with this issue but if someone else could have covered I would have said no. Disneyland eh! Our nearest one is Paris, bit far for me to be at LOL. Well Ellie, it would depend. If it was an arrangment that I would be "on call" on certain days even if it was the weekend or my day off I would go in. Other than that if there was no such agreement I would go in if I had not made any specific plans for that day. If on the other hand I had made appointments at the doctor, hair dresser or promised my dids or friends an outing I would simply say I am so sorry but I cannot come because I already have other commitments. I would leave it at that and not go into details.

Hi Linda, No I am not on call but this is something that needs to be dealt with by myself before a deadline so I do feel somewhat obliged, the only arrangements I had made were for me and ME time so I guess I shall just go in as not letting anyone else down. Huggles. Ellie :D

I would say I had plans. I know that it's important to be on the job when you are needed....but there are so many where I work that don't go the extra mile and usually I do.....so if there is something special for me to do...I skip the work thing...but I also work full time and anything more then my forty hours is overtime....so they don't usually call me in!

Hi Jill, I did go in as it was ME time I had planned and am going to do tomorrow instead. I understand what you mean, we have the workers and the shirkers at our place too, but we do seem to be getting a good team of workers and less shirkers these days which helps. Huggles. Ellie :D

I'd feel obliged to go in -- especially because of today's economy. I'm really wimpy when it comes to asserting myself.

I do not work a job where I am required to be on call, so I would likely not answer the phone when I saw the number on the caller ID. If they truly need me to come in, they will leave a voicemail when they call, then I can call them back and tell them I will work if I choose to. Otherwise, I can just tell them I was outside with the dogs and didn't hear the phone. I have gone in to work on my days off in the past when they needed me to, though, so I would likely go in once I got the message...

it would depend on what the day planned was, if it was something that could wait for another day then I would probably go to work, but if I had bought tickets in advance, or was meeting people I would not see again unless I went this day then I would again have to pass it up. But any other reason, I would probably go in.

I have always went in when called to do so. I would take all of the hours I could get when I was working. That's part of my I'm in the shape I'm in now. I was an avid work-a-holic. The doctor told me I was killing myself from over working all of the time. I was just doing what was natural for me and what I felt was right no matter what the doctor said. I wish now that I had slowed down a lot so I would still be able to work. Oh well, se la vie.

It all depends on if it is overtime and if the company treated me with respect or not. It would also depend on if I could reschedule my planned day.

I think that would depend firstly on the type of day out I had planned, and the circumstances of the call up. If my day out involved other people, or promises to my kids, then I'd be less likely to drop everything. If it was just a day out shopping or coffee with friends, something that could easily be rearranged, then altering my plans wouldn't hurt. The key thing I think would be the circumstances of the call up. If I worked somewhere with just a few employees then I would feel more inclined to help out. If I didn't, my colleagues would suffer. And it would depend what industry I worked in and how much of an emergency it was. If I was a paramedic for instance, and there had been a big emergency, that would be a very different situation to one where I was a data inputter and someone else fancied a day off.

Hi GreenMoo, I hadn't considered that one with the question but yes if I worked for an emergency service and there was a major incident where cover was needed I would be there. I did go in but it wasn't because of staff shortages or anything like that I was needed to sign some paperwork. In fact I was only there for about three hours so it was no big deal really but I just wondered whether others would have gone in or not. Huggles. Ellie :D
10 Jan 09
It would depend on a few things, how many days off I would have had off that week, if I had planned to do anything with people and what shift they would want me into do. If I had decided to go in then I would choose a time to suit me as its either that or no. I really wouldn't feel obliged to go in though.

Hi ellie, Since hubby has been out of work for a year and a half, you betcha I'd go in. In this economy you can't take anything for granted. No matter how good you are at your job, there are no guarantees. Anyone who feels secure in there job is a fool. I'm not trying to be mean, just realistic. As they say, here today, gone tomorrow. If you want to survive this recession waiting to be called Depression, then don't take anything for granted. We are in a real economic crisis and everyone needs to wake up to it. xoxoxo leenie

Oh my. This question brings back way too many memories for me! LOL Yes I probably would go in but that is because I worked a job for 10 years (hospital) that I was required to. I got so sick of being on call. You couldn't plan anything because you had to go in at the drop of a hat so when you didn't plan anything and just waited on them to call...you guessed it..they didn't call! Glad that chapter of my life is over! LOL

Hi Fasttalker, Oh that must have been so frustrating, but ironic I guess on the day you sit in waiting and no call and yet when out enjoying called back to work. Hospital work is 24/7 265 days a year and you done a tremendous job in that chapter of your life. Huggles. Ellie :D

I dont think I would go I probally wouldnt even pick up the phone since they cant be mad at you if you dont pick up the phone but they can be mad if you say you cant go. Luckly I have never been asked to go to work when I had a day off which I know I would hate it if it happend to me.

Hey Ellie. This is sure a tough discussion. I understand what you mean about today's difficult economic climate. It would be hard to say 'no' to the boss. I think if I didn't have anything important planned, I would probably go in. However, if I had something specific planned to do with a loved one and I knew it would be hard to schedule it again, I might say 'no.' I'm sure you'll make the best decision, if this actually happened to you.

Hey ellie! Well, unfortunately I think I would probably say yes to my boss! In fact, that had happened to me plenty of times when I was working! I even had to work on the weekend after having worked the whole week! It was never a good idea to say not to your boss! But, in my case it never seemed to matter anyway! But, definitely now in this economy it isn't a matter or having a choice! You should definitely go in to work and change your plans to another day!
