Changing colors

When you are crocheting or knitting and need to change colors, how do you do it? I used to tie small tight knots. Now I have learned to weave the loose ends of the new color into the project and then making the change, then weaving the leftover end of the previous color into the project. It works nicely and there are no knots in my projects at all unless there is an unexpected knot in the yarn at purchase. However, I have always wondered how well that method wears. Eventually the items will need laundered and I wonder if the woven ends will come loose and the item fall apart. What is your experience and how do you change colors in your projects?

well i was never really taught how to change colors when i am knitting so i have always just had to wing it so i just knit whatever i am making all the way through then go back and stitch in whatever other colors i need or i will knit what i need with one color then i will knit whatever else i need with another color and i will stitch the two of them together i would like to eventually learn how to change colors but i just do not have enough time on my hands to dedicate to knitting right now and it is not something that i can learn over the internet as i need person to person teaching when it comes to knitting

Cowgirl I am the same way for most things. I need to see it in person to learn how to do new things rather than read instructions. Changing colors in my crochet is something I taught myself however. I noticed how I weave loose ends into the work when a yarn I buy has a knot in it along the way, or when I come to the end of a skein. I didn't like having knots and I had to weave in the loose ends anyway, so I just started making those loose ends longer and wove them in as I crocheted instead of knotting. Sometimes I still have to make knots anyway. Lately, doing any kind of hand work is difficult, however. Arthritis and carpal tunnel makes it too painful. Thanks for responding!
