6 weeks with Rhonda and I haven't lost a pound...

Over Thanksgiving weekend, I started using our eliptical instead of doing my usual 3 mile walk in the morning. During the winter the weather is just too unpredictable to be able to walk every day. When we bought the eliptical in July, we also bought an ifit cartridge that has 24 workouts on it that span 8 weeks. I'm used to walking every day, so I did the workouts almost every day instead of every other day. We started with the beginner cartridge because this was for my husband and he hadn't been doing any kind of exercise. Well, when you start the workout, Rhonda introduces herself as your personal workout trainer. She instructs you when to increase your pace or when the resistance is changing. Almost every minute she says something to you. It's not uncommon to hear things like: One more minute, at this pace! Great job, remember your goals! I'm increasing your pace! I'm decreasing your resistance! Take water breaks as needed! Remember to breathe, nice and deep! Remember, you can do anything for one minute! Well, I finished the 24th workout on the beginner cartridge this morning and I haven't lost one single pound. I've watched what I've been eating, for the most part. I think the main problem is that my activity hasn't really increased. I've gone from walking 3 miles in an hour to working out at a beginner level for half an hour... I hope Rhonda does better for me on the next cartridge!!

Oh, I think she's going to get me good tomorrow. I start the intermediate cartridge and the workouts are longer and faster... Should be lotsa fun!

Walking is great exercise! You basically need to just do SOMETHING, and I'm sure that you're getting a good workout with the doggies :)

I get such headaches when I workout I do not like it. I did take the dogs for a mile walk today. They loved it and so did I. Daisy may is on the retractable leash and she is walks/runs for 3 miles while Petie and I walk the mile.

Hey reiny! I guess there is a difference between walking the 3 miles and using the eliptical! Maybe you do need to step up the pace (no pun intended)! Since you are used to a much more vigorous workout routine I think it is only natural that the workout that you have been doing on the beginner tape for a half hour isn't going to be anywhere near what you are used to doing on your regular 3 mile walk! So maybe you need to try the next tape or just increase the eliptical to closer to what your regular walking speed is and time is. That is the only only way to get it closer the the "real" thing!

I don't know which one is more rigorous... I am looking forward to the bit of a challenge that the intermediate cartridges will give me. I think the beginner were too easy, but I did need them to get used to the machine.

We have a personal trainer that comes to Day Services for the clients. Of course the staff asks questions as well. Someone said exactly what you are about the elliptical, and not losing even though she uses it all the time, while she watches TV. The trainer said that doing that you will develop adrenal exhaustion and will not lose. The advice was to lift weights three days a week, after an active warm up. Elliptical or other aerobic after lifting weights. She said that way you will have depleted your carb and glycogen reserves and then will burn fat while doing the aerobics. Lifting makes sure you do not deplete your muscle. After this workout she says to eat a small protein snack, as well as keeping hydrated. Now just to get me to do this.

Hmmm... that sounds kinda interesting... I might have to look into that. I've never really had a "regimine" before so this is all really new to me...

You may not have lost a pound but have you lost inches. That is what I determine if I am doing good at losing weight. It is a known fact that muscle weight more than fat and when you are exercising your muscle is gainin mass. So where the scale may say you have not lost any or it may appear that you have gained it is possible that the reason you didn't lose any was because your muscles are gaining mass. I go by how my cloths fit me.

Well, unfortunately, my clothes aren't fitting me any better than they were when I started. But now that I'm on the intermediate series, I think it'll go better for me.
