Did you buy your pet or someone gave it to you?

My kids got a free bunny from Craigslist. I searched online for free pets since my children were looking forward to have one. Pets teach children responsibility, love and care. Most pets have rehoming fees but one girl was giving away free bunnies since her bunnies reproduced a lot. We went to their house. My kids were wondering where we were going yesterday. I told them we will get a free bunny. When we arrived there they wondered why it wasn't a store. I was glad I don't have to buy one in th epet store but we did buy a cage, dish and food on our way home. My kids adore the bunny a lot.In this time, I think it is okay to search something for free like the free bunny. We will anyway still spend for it. How about you, how did you get your pet?;-)

Your kid's bunny reminds me of my ex because she used to own two bunnies. She bought them from a pet store. My Moochie my was given to me by my chatmate/friend who's the younger sister of my classmate before in Psychology. She was having problems maintaining their pets because they keep producing hehe.. I asked her if i can have one and she said ok. When i first saw Moochie, i can tell that he's not taken care well. He's got a bald spot somewhere on his thighs. Plus, he's too skinny. I though my mom wouldn't like him because he looks so ordinary but as he grew older, he's has became the baby in the family. He's my mom's favorite. Among all our pets, he's the only one who never experienced being leashed. My day is incomplete without playing with Moochie.

That's true! They're like babies. Even our neighbors here recognized Moochie.

I had a pair before when I was still in the Philippines like more than a year ago. I am letting my brother take care of them now and they have reproduced. Some of the babies were given to my friends. Even my husband who got mad at the thought of getting a pet has loved our pet bunny. It's jusr amazing how pets can melt people's heart.;-)

My fiancee paud $25.00 for my dog. At the time the owner was being desperate because she was pregnant and she was needing food. To me this dog is more happier where he is because I think he was abused a lot when he was a puppy. To me it does teach me responsibility love and care. To me he is spoiled by everyone in the trailer park. To me he is a good watched dog.

I see, that's great. You may have paid it but at least both you and the dog benefited each other. I even also wanted to get the cockatiel but my husband don't allow me to raise a lot of animals at home. ;-) I wanted to have a dog more then anything else but I am at fine with a bunny for now.

Our first and second dog has been given to us by my uncle. The other dogs that we have (or had) came from our second dog (she's a female). Our dogs are related with each other in a way ... LOL ... =)

Yes you can say that it is an extended family of dogs ... LOL ... I really like how they care for each other, I think they can sense that they are somehow related =)

I see, so you have created an extended family of dogs.lol. It reminds me of our neighbors who had more than a dozen cats. She feeds them every morning, noon and afternoon and I can see them gather around her. I am not sure though if they are all related. In some way perhaps.;-)))

Am not really fond of pets myself; in fact I don't like them. But when I came here everything was changed since am sleeping w/ them by now....lol. Yes am sleeping w/ cats, the ones I really hate most while I was still in the Philippines. My husband has two cats LEXIE & TRIXIE and he loves them very much and treated them like children and they are always have part in our groceries. He bought these guys 6 years ago and I was so touched by the story behind their existence. They are sisters and were from an orphanage because their mom was killed by a car. My husband bought them when they were just peanuts and their birth certificate and his ownership records are still intact up to now, one thing that really amazed me.

Exactly, that's what is happening here in the house. Oh I forgot to tell you how often my husband is having conversation w/ his "girls"; they are literally talking to each other. They seemed to understand almost everything he says to them and they obey orders as well. Honestly it's only here where I witnessed pets acting like humans unlike the ones we have at home in my country. Here they are so tamed and very domesticated. My husband trained and treated them like real human and part of the family; they reciprocated in a manner one can really appreciate of.

Yes, it's amazing how they have treated animals here. We refet animals as it but they refer them as he/she meaning they are almost as equal as humans. Oh well, if you treat them like humans pretty much they also act like one.;-)

My Sophie - My 8-month old puppy. She loves the slippers.
I found my pet walking along the highway with her sister. I thought I couldn't let such a cute puppy become roadkill (you know how it is here in the Philippines) so I took them from the road and gave the other to a friend of mine. Now, the dogs are already 8 months old. My Sophie has become such a special part of our family now. A bit too energetic with the sharp and painful claws but still well-loved nonetheless.

It's a good thing you were able to save the puppies. They are really adorable ones. No wonder they are considered as man's best friend. It's funny how I remember some people if not most give their leftovers to dogs. Dogs are treated a lot better here like real people almost. You can try nail filing youru dog's claws because cutting them with clippers is more painful, so as not to hurt people holding her.;-)

The majority of the pets I have had were bought. Most of them were from the pound (cats), some were from breeders (cats and dogs), and some were from the pet store (bunnies and birds). The only time I ever got them for free was when I'd find them as a stray. Although it's nice to get a pet for free we sometimes have to be careful because the pet that is free is sometimes the one that has the biggest issues of all and in the end it can be more costly than a pet you could have paid for that came with a health guarantee.

20 Jan 09
Yes, I did notice that if you get some free pets from pounds or shelter they bring with them some health issues. It's a good thing you have had experience on both bought and freebies. I do not think my kids' bunny have issues because they were given away for the reason of overpopulation and not for healthy issues at all. It is always best to check on the animal's health history before adopting it.;-)

We don't currently have a pet and probably won't for awhile. As a kid we had cats, which were given to us. When I was sixteen I had a rat given to me. She turned out to be one of the best pets I ever had. After that I rescued six rats (not all at the same time) from a local pet store selling them as snake food. I paid $3 each for five of them and $5 for the sixth one. This was nothing compared to their cages and accessories over the years...but I loved them and didn't mind spending money on them. I think that taking in free animals is good and keeps them out of the shelter. I understand an adoption fee at many foster homes and shelters, but it can make it hard for those who can scrounge up money for their accessories, doctor bills, and other needs, but struggle to do that. After all...$40 plus covering their needs is a lot of money.

hello hibiscus_mel that is awesome that you received a free bunny for your kids free off of craig's list. and to answer your question about where did my pet come from? my family and i have a female dog and she is a stray. one day where that we used to live, she just came wondering up into our yard and she didn't have a collar on either, but she didn't hang around that day thou, she kept coming back several days in a row so after that we fed her some chicken, i guess that she decided that she liked hanging out with us and she had been with us for several years now. take care and have a beautiful evening.

Our pet cat is a gift from I don't even remember who because he's been with us for so long. Our guard dog is also a gift from someone else who traded for our previous guard dog - I guess they liked how we grow them. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I bought both of my pedigree German Shepherds from a registered breeder. They each cost quite a lot of money - but I figure it was worth it as larger dogs like this can tend to have hereditary hip problems, dysplasia problems, or temperament problems, so paying extra up front means I won't have to deal with massive vet bills later in their lives. Besides - they both earn their keep as stud dogs back to the same breeder, so they've paid for themselves and more already ;)

Wow that's really a good kind of breed. It is good that you are looking for the future of;-) their pets. Being able to forecast is important because in the long run we are the one who will be responsible and who will be spending for them.

All cats I have had we got for free. I think it's ok too! But there is a opinion (at least in my country) that you can't take a pet for free, you have to pay at least 0.1$. I don't know why but that's how we do it here when giving away pets. Two years ago my girl cat had 5 kittens, we walked through the market offering them to nice people, everyone gave some little money. It's for a good luck maybe!

Yes, having them for free sounds great. But how did you acquire them? I have given away some of my pets before without asking anything anyway. Well, that's interesting that some people give you a cent or two when you give away pets. I was also really thinking about giving a pack of food for the remaining bunnies they have in that girl's house not money but at least it's something to thank her for what she had shared to us.Just a thought.;-)

I got my dog for Christmas three years ago. I bought her on Christmas eve. I paid for her mostly but my parents gave me a few hundred as my Christmas present. She's a pure bread yorkie and was pricey. I love her with all my heart and consider her one of my best friends. Ive had mutts in the past and other animals Ive received for free or very cheap as well though.

It is also good to buy yourself a pet as a present. If you can afford it why not. As long as you are able to give them all the love and attention they deserve however we may be able to acquire would not matter anymore.;-)

I think it's good for your children to have a bunny as a pet:) I am sure that they will feel very happy. I have two cats. One of them was given by my high school friend. Later when I graduated from the college, I bought another cat as I think my cat needed a partner. I love China

Yes, young as they are they need to have something that needs not as much attention. Kids sometimes get tired of pets but I think they really love her. I can see my kids so willing to clean the cage and give food. I think they got used to seeing me look after some pets before. They are really willing to take care of the bunny.;-)

We have many pets and have aquired them all in different ways. I have 4 dogs, our shepherd/husky cross we found on the side of the road at a young age in the middle of the night. The secon dog our heeler we got from a house that we cleaned and he was abandoned. The third dog my female papillon we had shipped up from california so we paid for the shipping. My male papillon we got because the breeder was having problems with him fighting with another male she had. We have 2 bunnies that we bought from an auction. We also have a bird that we bought from an auction. We have a turtle that we found, and last but not least we have 2 cats that we rescued.

Wow, what a collection of animals you have. You must have an aura for animals to get attratced to you. Some people can't just stand the sight of animals suffering. It is great that you are one of them. Your pets are just so lucky to have found a new home.
