i have a dog who's about 15 years old now. my neighbor just keeps saying that dogs are not supposed to be as old as that, so she's scared of it. cos she feels he's not a dog any more. so can any one tell how long a dog is to last. thanks.

Ok so if she doesn't think he's a dog anymore , what does she think he is ? I think with proper diet and exercise a dog can live a long healthy life . I don't know exactly how long their lifespan are but I know people who have dogs and cats that have live well over 20 years or more. When your neighbor figures out what the dog is enlighten us all.........lol Cheryl

Plenty of dogs live to be 15. Each dog is different. Smaller breeds tend to live longer but sometimes big dogs live to be really old too it just depends on the dog. As long as your dog is happy I would not worry how old he or she is just enjoy your time together and give him or her lots of love!

Life span in a dog depends on several things. First is the breed. If it's a toy or small breed they can live much longer than larger breeds. Dogs can live to be as old as 20 years old or better. It also depends on the care they receive. If they have a healthy diet and are kept current on vet visits it will extend their lives as well as having plenty of exercise and love. Okay, if your neighbor feels that your dog isn't a dog any more, what is he? Did he suddenly turn into a cat??? There is absolutely NO reason to be afraid of an older dog, and your neighbor is being a bit silly in her fears. He isn't going to turn aggressive and bite her or eat her. He's just an older dog that is enjoying being alive and getting to sleep in the sun and be loved by his owner. He isn't possessed, he isn't a demon, he very simply is a dog with good genes and a wonderful owner.

On average, dogs live 12-15 years but can often live up to 20 years. I believe the world record for oldest dog is 29 years. Smaller breeds tend to live longer than larger ones.

I have a cocker spaniel who will be 18 this spring. He's very long lived and a very loved dog - I'll be heart broken when we do lose him as we've had him since i was 9. We lost his mate to cancer 3 years ago and she was 14. If it hadnt been for cancer she'd still be with us too.

when I was a teenager, we had a dachsund that lived to be 13 years old. I then had a golden retriever years later that lived to be 14. Normally it is said that the smaller breed dogs live longer than the larger breeds. However, I think it is all in the genetics of the breed and the type of life they lead. And if he's not a dog anymore, what is he?

Haha, you have a funny neighbor. My dog lived up to be 17, but they can live as old as 20. On average, dogs live til about 11... my dog I have now is 14. Your dog is still your dog.

My husband had a Shepherd.mix, and he lived for 17 years, I do think it depends on the breed, and on the health of the dog. I had a poodle who lived 13 years. Also a rotwieler who only lived 8 years, she got cancer, I had to put her to rest, God bless her.
