Which four letter word do you hate most?

I think my pet hate one begins with F. Fine. You ask how someone is and they say "Fine! How are you?" so you say "Fine!" ... conversation over. Nobody really cares, do they? You say "I want to go shopping today." Your partner says "Fine ..." In a way that YOU KNOW means that shopping is NOT OK ... waste of time ... you are going to spend money, aren't you? ... on stuff you don't need? Four letters ... one word ... and a whole half hour's worth of tirade and lambasting compressed into half a second. The other one I dislike intensely begins with N. "Have a nice day!" "Do you like this dress/my hair?" ... "Yeah, its nice." "Nice a$$!" ... so it goes on! Tell me about YOUR pet 4LWs! (Likes and dislikes ... yes, I didn't mention my likes, did I ... it begins with L.)

If you hadn't said that 'fine' was your word then I would have said it as it's one of mine too. Now I'll have to say my second most unliked word - even though I think it may be the one you mentioned at the end It's thrown about too much and completely out of context. The bus driver, the milkman, the stallholders, just about everyone when you go shopping. On the phone too and I've never even met most of those who call nowadays trying to sell their stuff. 'Are ya awright love?', 'Can't beat them sproute love', 'Yes ove, another pint tomorrah' ugh ugh ugh! It's not supposed to be like that. There's just not that much love around for it be like that. It's 'tainted love' that's being dealt out there

Yes, I agree. I haven't been 'oop north' for a while, so I had forgotten about that. Do Italians do the same thing?

Gosh that accent makes me homesick! Yes Italians are exactly the same and with the same word too. Everyone gets called 'Amore' here by everyone and so the whole response would translate into Italian and be absolutely perfect unfortunately. Even the accents alter here from north to south too but the word is the same. In Rome 'Amore' becomes 'Amò' pronounced 'Amow'. Oh the joys of travelling only to find that most things are the same all over - just coloured differntly

You make me fall about laughing! Yes, it's true that 'love' or however it's translated and pronounced (and I'm sure that other cultures have exactly the same thing) is overused ... but it is, at least, a potentially 'nice' word ...(there I go again) ... somewhat better than using 'f*ckwit' as an endearment.

sometimes the alternative to the word "FINE" is "GOOD". like; how are you? "yeah, i'm doing GOOD! how's the movie?...it was GOOD! how's your parent by the way?...she's doing GOOD! any word that can take place for those two? "GOOD job"! hahaha

I know about Chinese being a 'tonal' language: one word sound can mean many different things depending on whether it's said using a high, middle, falling, rising or high-low-high tone (or whatever). Think about English! How many different meanings can we get into a simple word like 'Yes' or 'No', depending how it's said? Yes, Good and Fine are pretty interchangeable depending on where you come from. So, dur de bist, my loverr!

Ahhh ... you aint fum round 'ere, then? I see that (even though you have Bristol in your name) you are from the Philippines and probably doan't know what I'm on about! 'Dur de bist' is Bristol English for 'There you are'. 'My loverr' is more Devon than Bristol but used when talking to almost anyone ... even people you have never met before.

Ah the two four letter words I dislike most are : Hate - ooh such a strong word and used over and over and yet rarely when it should be. Hatred is such an immense emotion and should never be bandied about with reference to people and things in the manner it is nowadays. Hero - this is probably only since moving to the United states. The word is bandied about so much here that it belittles it when it is used in the right context. Every military person here is referred to as a hero - I beg to differ they are faithfully and loyally carrying out the duties/job they volunteered for that does not make them a hero! To bandy the word around so freely takes away from its value when someone does in fact perform a heroic act. And may I ask are you referring to the Fens as in Wisbech is the Capital March likes to think it is LOL

I won't say it's a word i hate. Just overused... That word is "NICE" How's the food? "NICE" How's the weather? "NICE" haha. There are 2 others words but they are not 4 letters. They are "whatever" & "anything" What do you want to eat? "ANYTHING" In fact these 2 words are so widely used in my country that a local company has decided to name 2 of our can drinks "anything" & "whatever". It's so funny.

The 4 letter words that I hate must, I can't put into print because they are curse words or otherwise obscene. I do not use these words and dislike hearing them used everywhere, even out of the mouths of children.

i agree with your word you mentioned "fine" depending on the situation it can sometimes drive me crazy! and i think it all depends on the tone being used with that word, but a lot of people do use the word fine when they really don't care about answering a question so thats definitely one of the words that annoys me LOL the other 4 letter word that i'm not too fond of is the word "like". it really bothers me when people use the word "like" a million times when they are speaking... "like...you know" they just add it in every chance they can super annoying!! great topic! very interesting, i enjoyed this one!

For many, many years my most despised four letter word was DODECAHEDRON. But then I got me a little edumacation and now it's WHAT. Seriously though, the word WHAT when used in the context of answering me with it when a person hasn't heard me just drives me up the wall! Call me old fashioned if you will, but to me it is an unbelievably rude way to respond to someone. And my favourite? Hmmmm. It's too late here now for me to think clearly enough to answer that one just now. But the word LOVE is definitely up there!

Love is everywhere..... but that's the point.. there's Love and love but oddly enough they tell us that 'All you need is love la la la la laaaaaa' so maybe that's what caused the problem in the first place!

I'm with ya on 'nice' - it's one of those awful vague words. I also hate when people use 'like' all the time, like 'Valley Girl' talk. 'Ya, so, like, it was really nice, but like, I don't really think it was like nice enough'!

We have an exact equivalent of 'Valley Girls' here ... gum-chewing bimbos who think that things are, "like, reealy cool, innit?" There are various kinds and you can find them all over Britain, often as checkout assistants.

I can tell you which four letter word my kids hate the most. Work. They avoid it like the plague. You would think that they were allergic or something. But for me the four letter word that I hate the most is the other f word. I especially dislike it when people can't make one sentence without using it.

heyy... nice is one of my favorite words..... i use it all the time.. mostly to confuse people... when they ask something.. il say its nice... or your nice... they dont really know if it is guud or bad. in a way it is gud for me because i can cleverly hide the truth if it is bad... if it is gud.. then ther is no problem.. its nice anyway...

i go for "EASY" because exam wouldn't be EASY if you'll not study i go for "EASY" because you can't take it EASY if you really want to burst out your anger i go for "EASY" because problems wouldn't be EASY if you just think and think that you have a problem and you do nothing at all i go for "EASY" because having money is not that EASY if you'll just sit and dream that one day i'll be the richest person on earth i go for "EASY" because life wouldn't be EASY if you'll just spend your 24/7 sleeping or simply not doing something about it In short, in reality, there is no easy thing in this world aside from preparing instant noodles or washing clothes using your high end washing machine or other similar activities.

I'm going to have to agree with love. They are both very popular and most commonly overused words. The L word (no, not that L word! The other l word. Love.) is so overly and vaguely used. It doesn't mean much anymore. You could say, "I love you." for the weirdest things. I was looking at my sister's yearbook. All of the people who signed the yearbook wrote "I love you. I'm going to miss you this summer." No, I mean 3/4 of all the comments they wrote had that. It's been used so out of context, I don't even care to even find if the person's serious about it. As for the f-bomb, I can't say much about it but I use it sometimes, but not too often. I don't know, call me inappropriate, but it just sometimes makes an adjective or a sentence more colorful. ahaha I feel silly for saying it now.

Hi Owl, Honestly, it's not the words that bother me although I understand and feel similar to what you feel about the ones you mentioned. I think it's more the attitude. The one's that make you feel taken for granted. The ones that make you feel like you aren't even there. It's the lack of words and not just in a relationship but in the work place and all the places you mention the words like fine, or nice. It would be so wonderful if people would just speak their minds. But do we really want that? Yes and no. We aren't all capable of speaking our minds without causing hurt feelings or anger. Sometimes it's best to give a generic response just to keep the peace. Some of us are lucky enough to hear the truth wihout over-reacting, are you? Do you really want to know how a person is feeling or their opinion of how you look? Believe me after working as a bartender, a bank teller and environments where you have to relate to people on a daily basis, you either want to hear the answers or you take the easy way out. For me, I truly cared about the people I served and wanted to hear how they really felt and they knew it. But most people are just being polite, and that's ok. leenie

I dont like the four letter word Fart. I always hear my grandma call my grandfather an old fart. Or my sister sometimes will be on the phone with people and tell them she has to fart. I think it is a rude word that is used way to much.

Blue. I hate the word and the color. I also hate the expression, "feeling blue". For me it's a weak description and it's right up there with "You're too yellow" when all you wanna say is "You're chickening out." I hate it when they use colors to describe expressions. It's an irrational hate, yes, but I have the right to be irrational sometimes right?
