I was wondering if there were jobs that people wouldn't want to do? If that has changed now because of these economic times, etc. Have you ever had a dirty job that other people didn't want to do?
My Dad was a carpenter, but when he got older, they stopped calling him. So he bought a septic tank business. That's a very dirty job. He could stand the smell because he couldn't smell and the rest didn't bother him.
The dirtiest job I ever had that other people didn't want was cleaning a McDonald's. I think I got the job because no one else would take it. Also, it was overnight and not everyone wants to be in a store by themselves over night. The great thing was that they switched to 24 hour service right about then so I wasn't all alone. But it was really hard to clean a kitchen when people are cooking in it, esp. the floor.
So what jobs won't you do and what dirty ones have you done? Thanks and take care.

I wouldn't want to clean the porta potties placed all over in public locations for special events. That would be nasty. I can't smell either, the result of an accident, and do have a strong stomach but it's not something I would do. I'd rather clean McDonald's. Where I work now I was told to load toilet paper in the ladies bathroom and then eventually was told to clean around like the sinks and toilets. I wouldn't do it since it's not part of my job description. We have a maintenance man who is suppose to do this job. I did clean the sinks but that's where the bus stopped. Been employed there over 7 years so I suppose the boss didn't think it was worth firing me. Cleaning a public toilet is not my idea of fun.

I agree, the porta-potties are disgusting.

I agree with you. Handling food is a different department and pay scale as cleaning the toilets. The toilet issue stopped right away since I refused to do it. I wouldn't mix the two. I work for 2 departments but at the same facility. Took the winter off so I can be lazy.

I wish I could take the winter off so I could be out of the cold!

I've never seen the show "Dirty Jobs." The only dirty job that I think I've done is stripping wallpaper that's really stuck. I use Dif, that gel stuff, then I scrape, peel, scrape, peel. The gel flies everywhere, drips on my clothes and the floor, even though I've got it covered with a plastic dropcloth. It's quite gooey and sometimes, the adhesive on the back of the wallpaper has to be scraped off the wall. It's all drippy and yet, sticky after Dif's been put on it. Anyway, that doesn't exactly involve "dirt" per se, but still it's messy and gross.
Your job cleaning a kitchen floor while people are cooking doesn't exactly sound like a picnic, that's for sure. Glad you don't have to do that anymore.

Dirty jobs is fun. This guy is funny. The jobs he gets himself into, amazing. Digging up worms in worm flats, shoveling maneure onto mushrooms, emptying septic tanks, cleaning city sewers, getting peat from peat moss bogs, etc. He starts out totally clean and ends up filthy. He's got a great set of muscles and is not bad looking either. He makes jokes and tells you how hard something is. He's been covered in just about everything from dirt to pine pitch. He takes it all in stride and he asks for more people to send them their dirty jobs so he can visit more places. He'll probably run out of dirty jobs eventually, but until then, it's lots of fun.
The scary thing for me was that hot grease was being used above me while I was cleaning underneath. I came close to getting splattered a couple of times. That upset me more than anything.

that's a great, big, big "Yup!" I do all the cleaning & maintenance at our only Local Pub.....and "WOW" it can be a dirty job! I will NOT go into it...but there are times that driving a "septic truck" would be a step up!
I keep this job, as it is the backbone of my income! I have two small businesses that are weather or economy based....so they cannot be a reliable source of bill paying existence!
But there are pluses to this job, as well...I have been there 6 years, I come & go as I please (within the parameters of the hours the pub is open/closed)! I am never questioned about the hours that I submit!
It's a dirty job.....but someone has to do it! I chose to live on this Island, where employment is not one of it's greater features....so, go with the flow! Cheers!

Yes, go with the flow indeed. I live in an area where staying employed is a challenge. As you can tell by my Dad and my many income related topics. I cleaned a fire station before and many men were drunk and missed the facilities, so I know what you're not saying. Take care.
