Where does our meat come from?

I saw a video on my friend's blog that was pretty sickening. It was about the way chickens that are raised for meat are typically treated in the US. Watch it at your own risk and feel free to come back and comment (not a ref link) - it's the top blog on her page: http://www.yuwie.com/profile/?id=69281 I eat meat myself but I really can't stand the way these animals (also cows and pigs - there are other videos on the same subject with cows and pigs) are treated. I also hate to think that the chemicals being fed to these animals (growth hormones and anti-biotics) end up in our bodies and our childrens' bodies. I buy organic whenever I can for that reason, but it is hard for everybody to afford that. I do think that if you eat meat, you ought to at least be aware of where it comes from and what's in it. And if you're horrified, you might want to take a stand by either becoming vegetarian or buying organic or by writing letters, signing petitions, etc. Sadly it's all about the money, folks...

I haven't eaten chicken the was other than free range or organic in over four years Dawn. Precisely because of the manner in which intensively reared chicken is raised. Even with FR and organic you can't be 100% certain that they have been well cared for, but it is more likely. I would NEVER eat at KFC type places. You just don't want to even imagine how their chicken is "cared" for. I have written to politicians and signed petitions etc, but in the end the best way is direct action. I just don't buy "standard" chicken. I hope that if enough others do the same then maybe the big supermarkets will get the message. The recession will push this backwards however as people will vote with their purses and not their consciences I suspect.

Yep people already are voting with their purses, but it's worth the extra money to me.

I think i have seen this particular video sometime back, infact they called it something else not chicken. I do not eat meat , though my family is addicted to it . As you say one has to be very careful while buying meat. Here i go to a country farm where the chicks are fed grains mostly and the goats and sheep are allowed to graze in the open.We do not eat pork or beef at home, but the children do love steaks and eat it at restaurants where one is never sure from where the supply comes ? As you rightly say it is all about money and people do anything for money these days

We do eat all kinds of meat although I do try and get organic as much as I can. The supply in the grocery store is limited and expensive though.

Well, I have seen terrible ways of how chicken meat is processed in some other countries. Of course, I have no evidences as they are only emails sent to me. However, I believe that the best is still to go to the wet market and purchase the meat to cook it yourself.

Wet market? Not something you see here in the US...

Hi Dawn, I agree with Zu, like her I'm just saying the obvious like the others have also demonstrated their are good and bad processes and processors and too often it is about the money. I know that you get better yield if you give more room and care and attention, it is a matter in the hands of others where space is over crowded and the only resolution is to have good leadership.

That is so true, I did work in a factory at one time meat processing and it was strange that smells often determine courses of actions. The inspectors use all of their senses. So yes, we learn and we have learned a lot in ways of reducing stress. It just carries out in all other aspects of our lives. Being human is being humane...

I have been a proud vegetarian for almost 20 years. Not only is meat bad for the environment and for health (and often has diseases, antibiotics, steroids, etc), but I cannot stand the fact that animals are treated as commodities and so brutally abused. Animals may be raised for food, but they can still hurt and feel and be scared, just like your dog or cat. Next time you sit down to eat a slice of bacon, think about if that pig were your dog that had been living in cramped conditions, in pain and horrified! I agree, Dawn. If people DO eat meat, they should face the realities they are contributing to suffering and they should certainly know where the meat came from and the reality of slaughterhouses!

I am also a proud vegetarian. I didnt watch your video, however I can imagine what it is because I seen one 11 years ago and I havent touched meat since and never will again. My heart is bigger than my stomach, and I have a conscience.

I dabbled with vegetarianism a bit back in the 90's but I do like meat. But the idea of animals being treated like that could put me right off the idea of eating it.

I always look for good quality meat and organic products. I am really picky with meat and I even get my butcher to mince a piece of steak (that I choose out) for my lasagnes I use it for. As for chicken. I am not going to watch that video, as I hate looking at them at the best of times. My butcher does an extra large free range one that is really nice though. I do not buy meat from supermarkets as I do not trust them. Good quality meat should be everywhere though, at better prices for everyone to afford.

Butchers are hard to find here, it's pretty much all supermarket meat where I live.

Well, I did not check out the link, and believe me that was a conscious choice. I do eat meat but not alot. I once saw something similar about how cows were housed and then slaughtered. Quite frankly, it was atrocious, grotesque, and barbaric treatment. Yes, I get that we're killing these animals in order to eat them but that does not give us permission to treat them the way we do. And don't even bother to get me started on the sanitary and health concerns that such slaughter houses pose. Let's just say they could benefit from a cleaning once in awhile. Perhaps I'm taking the easy way out in not viewing the video and still buying meat even though I know what is taking place. You're absolutely right though when you say it comes down to money, because I wouldn't mind buying organic and taking a stand, I cannot afford organic everything. Not that, that is an excuse, but unfortunately it is a sad reality.

I have to say that until the general public cares, this way of producing meats will always be out there. In all honesty, some people don't care or care to know and even if they do, it's still cheaper to buy then organic or from your local markets. I live in a farming community so the meats that I eat are from surrounding farms. I don't like store bought meats because I don't know where they come from. What is produced overseas ( in conditions worse then in the US ) can be processed and marketed here. We have no idea what they were fed. I know that this is happening. I don't agree with it. To be honest, people are blind because it's easier. They don't know because they don't care. Does that sound cold? It is, but it's also true. A family shopping isn't going to buy the more expensive brands from the better companies because it's all because of cost. That's the sad part about it. People will get mad, comment, but bottomline when they're buying their groceries? They're going to move towards the cheapers meats instead of the more costly ones.

Yeah and as this depression gets worse, voting with their purses will become more common. Completely aside from the way the animals are treated, I just hate the idea of my children eating meat with growth hormones and anti-biotics and heaven knows what inside it.

Hello!! As a wild cat, my meat comes in nice little chunks inside of a huge bag. When I'm a well-behaved kitty, I get tuna in a can! YUM! The person that I allow the privilege of tending to my feline needs eats her meat from packages that are mainly products of Canada. I'm not to sure why US has to get beef from Canada, but that's what the little white sticker says. You want some real horror stories about meat and meat production? Research "growth hormones" and "chicken mass production". If you want to turn someone into a vegetarian, this is one sure fire method! Thanks! meow & ciao! !^..^!

Growth hormones and children entering puberty too early is one good reason why I have gone organic! But I'll have a look into it...

There are many measures to change places like that but I'm telling you that most farms aren't that way to begin with. It's like anything, take each farm as they come. PETA.com is very extreme in what they show and tell you. But they are a great place to help send you information on the ways you can help change things. They will also help start you on the path of vegetarian. Fight those who do that kind of thing but remember that not all places are. Watch where you buy you organic things too because some are fake. It's like the bottled watter that comes from the company's city tap.

PETA is very extreme and I don't always agree with their tactics. But I think I have better odds with organic food than not, although I have no doubt that everything isn't always on the up and up. And not all farms are that way, but the ones that are need to be dealt with!
