As most of you know I haven't been close to my family in a very long time. My b/f however,is very close to his. They live about six hours away and he looks forward to visits on most every holiday I have off from work. I was just wondering..on what holidays do you visit your family?

I live in town with my brother and mother.
I see my mom several times a week.
I see my brother as seldom as I can...
My sister comes to town 3 times a year, Christmas, spring and summer.
I see my brother generally when my sister comes, Easter, Mother's Day, a couple of times during Tax season (he's a CPA and does my taxes) and Thanksgiving. Then if we connect at mom's we might see each other.
Think we are not close?

Because of our small farmlet, we tend not to visit our families on the holidays. For example Christmas is in the summer and Easter is in autumn/fall and during those times we have crops in the ground or on trees and they need to be watered or picked and maybe packed for market or customers.
With our children, who all live a distance from us, we have them alternate times and in fact ‘share’ them with their partners’ families. Last year they all had Christmas with their partners’ families and several of them came to us for New Year but others we haven’t seen as they live some distance from us. Some of them will have Easter with us this year. Mother’s Day this year they will be with their partners’ families and strangely enough we will have them for Father’s Day.
If I am still taking loads to Queensland in May, which I should be as the contract goes to July, then my partner will come up with me for a trip. One of the children lives near there and so she can meet us and my partner can stay there and I will pick her up the next trip which would be later that week. If possible the trip will be scheduled so that I can take a couple of days’ break and if I work out the driving times correctly, I can legally do it through the log book. It will not be a problem with the company I am sure as they would rather I do it that way than take a week on holidays.
No it will not be one of the special holidays I know but a chance to see them all the same. They do not have a lot of money so driving down would probably stretch the budget. Also if they come down then there would be heaps of other people to see etc and it would take up too much time and I doubt they could afford it anyway. Things will be quiet on the farm at that time anyway and very little will be going out so I am sure that my brother and sister-in-law will stay at our place and keep an eye on things.
Extended family, i.e. brothers and sisters and their families. We seldom get together with them as none of them live here, it is almost impossible for us to visit them so it means them coming here. From time to time, usually every few years, the others might organise themselves and come for a visit so we see each other then but that is all.

Grabbing what time you can sounds like the way to go for you oldboy. It's nice that you make such a nice effort to stay close. It will be nice that you and your partner have a chance to get away in May. The weather will be nice there? Thanks for responding and take care.

It is usually fairly nice weather in May as it is the end of autumn. Winter has not yet arrived, although our winters are not cold like they are in some countries but generally May is very pleasant. Also Queensland has a warmer climate than where we live so it will still be warm withiout being hot and humid if we can get away up there for a few days.

Actually, my family comes to my home for most holidays because we have a good house and piece of property for it. My mom's house and my sister's house cannot hold that amount of people.
My husband's family lives much further so we see them once or twice per year and his brother and family and us take turns staying with each other for a few days over the New Year holiday.

I prefer to have it here and not travel, if I do not have to. If I do travel, I prefer staying overnight at a local motel or hotel so I do not have to drive home tired.
Besides, my husband is the best cook in the family and everyone likes his food the best!! LOL

That's even better! Sometimes I get tired of being the one go all the time. It would be a job to be the host but a nice change too. I may change my mind once I had to do it a few times but as of now,I'm thinkin it would be. Thanks for responding.

I'm quite fortunate that my family and my husband's family live nearby so we're able to spend the holidays with both of them. It's still a challenge diving our time though ... probably even more challenging once we give them grandkids, haha .. happy mylotting

I stay with my immediate family, therefore, there is no need to visit. Though my parents stay with younger brother and they keep on dropping in, when there are 3-4 holidays and vice versa.

This past Christmas was the first holiday for me to spend with my family in 4 years. It was the first time back to Texas, since I moved to the Northeast, in 2 years. Like you my b/f's family lives closer, only 45 minutes away. So, for the past 4 years, holidays have been spent at his parent's home, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
