Two young people, aged 16 and 18, were killed and 7 others injured last night in Miami, FL by an unknown shooter using an AK-47 assault rifle. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/sfl-bn-0123-miami-shooting,0,1132877.story According to the above article, "Six of the nine victims are current or former students from nearby Miami Northwestern Senior High School, Superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools Alberto Carvalho said." There were also shots fired from a second gun, the type of which hasn't been disclosed. You can read the entire article and you've probably seen some coverage about this incident on TV but I'd like to discuss one thing in particular - should any civilian be permitted to have an AK-47? I tend to agree with Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, who said, ""These are weapons of war and they don't belong on the streets of Miami or any other street in America." Annie

Annie, I agree 100%. Those are weapons of war and war only. So are a few other assorted items that our children are now able to find and bring to schools and other places of choice. It is a frighting thing that this is possible and we do have quite an angry youth coming up. I honestly think the only thing we can do is lead by example. Ainge

That is so awful. I do not know what in the heck the world is coming to anymore. This killing needs to stop. I figured things would start to get better in the U.S. but it seems that some people just do not want a good change. Those kinds of weapons do not belong on our streets at all. I do agree!!!!!

I wonder if they'll ever find out who did this shooting. One thing is sure, this was just a random act, the two kids who were killed weren't targeted for any reason they just happened to be in the line of fire. People shouldn't be afraid to go about their normal lives because they fear they may be shot! Annie

No, no civilian should have access to an AK-47.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, what would anyone without bad intentions want with one in the first place? Annie

cruelty in this world is everywhere...i hate to watch things like this because of just some stupid brainless people's actions like this..its true that those weapons are used for war not to kill innocent people just because they are just tripping..

I don't think civilians are allowed to own AK-47, they just buy them illegally. I just got up and haven't watched any news yet but it's really terrible that we just can't live in peace and have to fear for our life every time we step foot outside and even in your own home you not save anymore.
