My beloved cat died yesterday!

My cat, Amadeus died yesterday. He would have turned 2 in April. He lived on a screened in porch, so no other animal could have got to him. He didn't have any marks on him or no sign of a struggle. The other cat that lived with him is fine. He had lost control of his bladder a couple of times. He had never been to a vet, because I just didn't have the money. He had not had his shots, nor was he neutered. Are there any vets or vet assistants on here who might be able to give me some clue as to why he died? I have an other cat that was with him and I am taking him to the vet first thing tomorrow to see if he is healthy and to get his shots. I don't want to take chances again..... I am just confused as to how a cat who appears healthy just up and dies. He had lost some weight over the last 2 days and he got pretty lazy.... but he's a cat... aren't they supposed to be lazy....?

A couple other people on here mentioned that. I knew cats could get worms, but I didn't know about heart worms...... I heard of dogs having them, not cats. It's possible I guess. I just wish I knew what killed him, to know if the other one is safe or not.

Im not a vet but I love cats and have been living with their kind all my life. If he lost weight mybe he wasn't eating enough or he probably ate something which caused him to die. Im so sorry for your cat. Im so sad right now..

My other cat ate the same food and seems to be fine. He's going to the vet tomorrow, so I will know more then.

The other cat was perfectly healthy according to the vet. I guess it was something not environmental and not contagious that killed the other one. I just wish I would have taken him to the vet sooner.

Sorry to hear that. ((hugs)) I know how you feel about finances. I've got 3 cats & 3 kids ;) Sometimes putting a roof & food in everyones bellies takes priorities over getting a pet in for shots. I need to get my other two cats in for shots but I don't know when I'll have the spare $$ myself. I've heard of some vets giving hardship discounts but that was on the news. So we'll see what's what once we get our taxes figured out.

There are shots that you can administer yourself. About the only one that you cannot give to your animals is the rabies shot. I do it with my furry family so that I only have to pack them into the vet when they need the rabies shot or emergency care. With three dogs and four cats vet visits look more like the national debt than a vet bill!

I hear ya! I have been out of a job since november and I am still looking..... I thought that I was going to have to have my car fixed.... but my boyfriend's mom was able to fix it. LOL! His dad is a mechanic and tried the same thing that she did, but just didn't have the patience to do what needed to be done for it. Turns out, I don't have to spend money on that so I can get the cat neutered in a few weeks.... I am happy. I feel like he will finally be healthy.

In the state of Kentucky anyways.... there was a program.. it's no longer going on of course.... Another state might have a similar program though. The state would give you a voucher to let you come in and get your pets spayed and neutered for like $10 per pet. I got the paper work and went to turn it back in the program had ended.

I am so sorry for your loss! It is always difficult to lose a pet. It is even more difficult to lose a pet at such a young age! And it's so much worse to not know why! I can't even imagine what you must be going through! I am not sure about where you live, but around here there are lots of low cost vet clinics. They usually operate on the weekend, often in the parkinglot outside of petstores or animal shelters. They provide medications, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and other such services for a lot cheaper than regular vets. I would do an internet search for "low cost vet clinic" and the name of your city/state/etc. Any changes in health, appetite or behavior could be a sign of a very serious problem, and I'd hate for you to lose another pet in the future! So if you can't afford to go to a regular vet, I'd highly recommend going to a low cost vet clinic if you suspect something might be wrong! Also, if your other cat isn't neutered, I highly recommend getting that done! Even if it is an indoor cat that never goes outside and will never be around other cats and there's no chance of him impregnating another cat, it is the absolute best thing you can do for your cat's health and overall well being. Animals who are neutered are less aggressive, less territorial, and are less likely to spray or mark. Also, cats who are not neutered are at risk for prostate or testicular cancer or disease. And animals who are spayed and neutered live much longer lives than those who are not... for a cat it is 3-5 years longer on average! If you can't afford the surgery, there are plenty of low-cost options available.

I already made him an appointment for tomorrow. My mom says that he's really active, eating and drinking, and pottying normal. So those are always good signs. She said that he's been playing quite a bit and he wants to cuddle a lot as well, so he sounds healthy and normal. I just hope he don't have some unforseen thing going on with him as well.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have 7 cats of my own and all are my kids. I have to agree with the vet tech, with no vaccine history, it could have been feline leukemia or fiv or fip. All of which are deadly and contagious. You need to have your other cat checked for all these diseases and find a low cost vaccine clinic to have him vaccinated. this is the only way to save them from these diseases. I know it costs money, but it is worth it.

I'm so sorry. I have a cat that is just about the same age as your cat, maybe a little younger but not much. I know that if anything were to happen to him I would be destroyed. Feel better and know your feline friend is watching over you from kitty heaven.

Hi Thumper11, may your pet rest in peace in Kiddie Heaven! Always remember that when you make yourself responsible for an animal it is very similar to having a baby or child...it has needs that only you can take care of and must. On Vets...it'll take a bit of "shopping around" a few calls should do it but there are vets who care unconditionally about animals and will service some free or at drastically reduced rates...please do this for your surviving kiddie. I have 4 kiddies and my oldest daughter has two Pitt Bulls...they are expensive as you may imagine and we are far from well off but our vet actually accepts payments without interest charges...Bless him and all the other vets who are as dedicated. Get on the horn and call around, you may be surprised at what you may find... Good luck and my sympathys are with you. ~G~

Thanks, they are my children.... I am 26 with no children, other than my cats. I live in a very small town and there is not even a vet in our town we have to drive 30 minutes to get to the nearest one. My aunt, who had 9 cats goes to a really good one that isn't too bad on the prices, so I'll take my other one there I guess. That's where I took him before.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your precious cat. He was still really young. I have two cats, one of them sleeps most of the day, but she does get up to eat and drink, she is eleven years old, so that is expected. The other cat is six, and he lounges a lot during the day, but at night he gets active, when he is ready to attack the other cat. Maybe, your cat did eat something that he should not have. Neither one of my cats have ever been exposed to mice, thankfully.

I am sorry for you Thumper11. I have more than 10 cats in my house now but when something happens to any of them I go crazy. Even understanding a little about cats is hard to tell you what should have happened. Better for you to tell the story to the vet you will visit to have an idea of what happened. And also, it is a great idea to take your other one to the vet, very wise of you to do that.

I agree. I have had many cats throughout the years and I have had 2 disappear, ironically they were mother and daughter.... Weird... they disappeared at different times, like 5 years apart. I have had 2 that lived to be 10 years old and randomly die and now this one. I had others, but those usually came as strays and left shortly after arriving. I would take in any pet... I guess that's why I always seem to end up with them, I care too much about them to leave them out in the cold with no food. I am an animal lover. It just saddens me to not know what happened.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I am a cat lover (I have two) but not a vet. It sounds like something to do with his kidneys. As others have advised you' take the other cat to the vet get him checked out and see if the vet can shed some light as to what might have happened. Shots are important for pets although I can appreciate they are expensive especially when you have more than one. I put a couple of bucks away every week to cover vet and shots expenses as I have four pets. Hope it helps and again, I am very sorry about Amadeus.

I took the other cat to the vet today. He is perfectly healthy. Thank God! The vet wasn't sure what it was, but agreed that the loss of bladder control could mean kidney problems, cancer or leukemia. She wasn't sure without examining him, and of course, he's been buried, so I just said to check the other one of all that it could have been. He got his shots and hopefully everything is ok.

It might have been worms or some such. Like a B12 deficiency or something like that. He could have ate something bad also.

I'm thinking along those same lines. I wanted to be a vet back in middle school and high school and I learned a lot about cats and such. I knew that they needed to be vaccinated, but I just didn't have the money to do it. I did provide them food and shelter from bad weather and They always had littler boxes and water. Even when my water was turned off, I bought bottled water for my cats. LOL! I even bring them inside when the temperatures are below freezing here. I live in Kentucky, so we don't get bitterly cold more than a few times a year, but we do get snow and such. I bring them in if it's below freezing. They were able to keep each other warm. But now I'll be bringing in the little one, cause he won't have his big brother to keep him warm.
