Paid per article or with residuals?

Would you rather get paid for each article you write, or would you rather receive residual income as long as the article is active?
Sometimes I think I would rather get paid right now, because I need the money. But if I have time to wait and could receive residuals, I think that would really be best. It might take a while to get enough articles out there earning money, but once you do, it's all fluff.
What do you think? Would you like to earn money on something for the rest of your life? Or would you rather just get paid right now?

Well i can honest this with all honestly. I prefer to keep making money from the article. That is what I do online and I feel to keep making money from it is better than to be only paid one time. I have thought about doing it on a case by case basis but I have not found where I can get jobs other than by bidding for the jobs. If you are aware of any sites such as what I am looking for please let me know. I write online and I enjoy it very much. Nice discussion and I hope you get more responses as well. With Associated Content, you can do both! They will pay you upfront for your articles as well as continue to pay you for the articles performance over time. While there are some guidelines for the upfront payment, it isn't too hard to have articles that qualify for it.
There is a small banner in my profile if you are interested in looking into it. As of right now, AC doesn't pay for referrals, so that is not a concern for me. I mention it only because it is an easy way to get there.

Thank you both for your responses. I am already a member of Associated Content. Thank you for the suggestion. It doesn't seem to do very well for me. I am also a member of Helium, it is ok.
I have seen some improvement in my articles on eHow. I have really picked up the pace with them since receiving my first check this month.

I always seem to need the money, LOL. But I am hoping some of these articles I am writing will pay off in the long run. It's amazing, how you just can never tell what will pay.
I have one that pays, and think ok now I know what to write...and then when I write something similar it doesn't do much at all. On the other hand, I'll do something just for giggles and it will get some hits. Really weird how life works.
Although, I did have a Gen. Mgr. one time who told me if I could ever predict what people were going to do I would be rich. He was right.
