I'm worried that I'm about to lose my best friend.

Many of you know that I have multiple pets. I also had to have several put to sleep three months ago. Now my favorite cat Jade isn't doing well. She has been gradually losing weight - although she has been eating good and has been her usual playful self. Well now its the weekend, no vet offices are open, and she is refusing to eat. She seems very weak, her breathing is fast and she just wants to sleep. I'm hoping she can hold on until Monday so I can take her to the vet. But the way she is acting I'm afraid I'm going to lose her. Why is it when there are multiple vet offices they can't rotate so one office is on call during the weekends?? Jade is a rescue I've had for 9 years. They thought her age was 2 to 4 years old, but we don't know for sure. She was a frightened cat in the back of her cage, scheduled to be put to sleep when I found her at the shelter. One look in her jade green eyes and I knew we were soulmates. Jade usually sleeps on my pillow at night, her paws around my wrist and her head in the palm of my hand. But the last few nights she has stayed in the living room. I don't know if I can handle losing yet another "loved one." I had to have 4 put down in November, lost my mom just over a year ago. And now Jade is sick and I don't know what to do for her.

I'm sorry to hear about Jade. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved cat, I've lost a few of my own over the years. I've lit a candle for you and Jade http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng

Thank you. She seems more alert this morning, yet still doesn't want to eat.

I don't know what you are feeding her, but when my cats don't want to eat I go get a jar of meat baby food, beef and ham seem to be favorites, and let them have that. That's what helped me get Taj past his crisis this last fall. And then I still had to pull his teeth out.

Its apparent by your answer here that you didn't even read the discussion. You apparently just decided to answer based upon the discussion title. Since the best friend I am referring to is my CAT, I seriously doubt she will be moving to another city for work or study. Nor do I think she could answer the telephone if I tried to call her or message her. DUH

That sounds really sad. Well, let us hope for the best. Let us hope she pulls on till Monday...just a few hours left, and hope she gets better soon. It will be sad to lose another pet again, I know, but time is a great healer, and you only have to think of your lost pets as happy in heaven. Cheers and happy Mylotting

Oh Tess, It doesn't seem fair when things keep happening all at the same time. Since you love cats so much, you must have experienced the fact that they will go away if they can when their health is failing. She knows that her time is short and she needs to be alone. They have such a stong sense of independence. They are so sensitive to your emotional needs that they try to find a quiet place to do whatever comes next. I've had many many cats in my life and they are so in tune to nature and natural progress of life. Since tomorrow is Monday you'll be able to take her to the vet. Sweetie, Jade knows what she is doing. If you feel that the vet can help her then take her. You'll know what is best. God bless you and Jade. Just comfort her.Hugssssfor you and Jade. leenie

Thanks leenie. Jade is failing fast. Today she walked out to the screen porch for a few minutes, then came back in to sleep again. She did finally eat a little, but not enough. She has always been a small cat, but now she looks skeletal. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I'm thinking all they can do is put her to sleep if she is suffering. She hasn't drank hardly anything, and hasn't gone near a litter box. So I know she is very very sick. I'm trying to not be upset, because in Novemember when I had to have my pets put down my tears and upset stressed them out and they were terrified. I don't want this for Jade.

I am so sorry for your pain. But if she has to be put down then I know that you would do it. It is so hard losing a best friend and you have had her for so long. Yes you will miss her. Unfortunately pets and people do not live for ever or even for as long as we would like. I just don't know what to say to you. I just hope that she does last to Monday and her life can be prolonged as long as she is not suffering. God Bless You.

Thanks. Its sometimes hard to tell with animals if they are in pain. She still purrs when I pet her, and has been watching the birds from her spot on the couch. We'll have to see what the vet says tomorrow.

I can well imagine what you must be going through, and my thoughts are with Jade. We've lost two cats recently as well. Is there perhaps a 24-hour vetenary clinic in your area? A vet that makes house calls? There is one in my city, but since I'm pretty sure I'm nowhere near your area (I'm not in the States) it would be pointless to pass those on. Hope Jade pulls through.

The vets here don't do house calls. The nearest emergency clinic is about an hour away. So far she is a little more alert today. So I'm going to watch her and get her to my vet in the morning. Sorry for the loss of your two cats also.

Here in the Philippines, the vet are available even weekends. May be there too, search for the available vet in your place so your cat will get soon..
