HAPPY GROUNDHOG'S DAY EVERYONE!!! so that little FAT F@%!ER Punxsutawney Phil has predicted 6 more weeks of winter. but what does it all mean....where did this tradition come from Oh Wise Bear???i'm glad you asked: In 1723, the Delaware Indians settled Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania as a campsite halfway between the Allegheny and the Susquehanna Rivers. The Delawares considered groundhogs honorable ancestors. The name Punxsutawney comes from the Indian name for the location "ponksad-uteney" which means "the town of the sandflies." The name woodchuck comes from the Indian legend of "Wojak, the groundhog" considered by them to be their ancestral grandfather. The earliest American reference to Groundhog Day can be found at the Pennsylvania Dutch Folklore Center at Franklin and Marshall College: February 4, 1841 - from Morgantown, Berks County (Pennsylvania) storekeeper James Morris' diary... "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate." If the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day, an animal would cast a shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of Winter. Germans watched a badger for the shadow. In Pennsylvania, the groundhog, upon waking from mid-Winter hibernation, was selected as the replacement. Pennsylvania's official celebration of Groundhog Day began on February 2nd, 1886 with a proclamation in The Punxsutawney Spirit by the newspaper's editor, Clymer Freas: "Today is groundhog day and up to the time of going to press the beast has not seen its shadow." The groundhog was given the name "Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary'' and his hometown thus called the "Weather Capital of the World.'' His debut performance: no shadow - early Spring." Oh Wise Bear......how have you gained such wisdom??? GOOGLE IS OUR FRIEND PEOPLE!!! http://www.stormfax.com/ghogday.htm do you think there's any truth to the groundhog's prediction??? if only male pigs are used, should we change ground pork to groundhog???

I've always loved the groundhog story ... and I don't care whether he's right or wrong - he's fun. Ground pork? You mean pork which has been ground in a grinder? Is that like 'how much ground could a groundhog grind if a groundhog could grind pork?'

Ah sconi for an actual hog to fly you need a trebuchet. They're too big for a regular catapult to get airborn for long.

aren't all hogs GROUND hogs anyways. i've never seen one that can fly or that lives in trees or anything. i think the groundhog has a better chance of being the grindEE instead of the grindER.

I wanna groundhog! I wanna groundhog! I could train one to be useful here in Egypt. It wouldn't be difficult, as all he'd have to do is predict if it was going to rain or not (Answer is ALWAYS no!) and he'd be friggin' FAMOUS! Personally, I reckon he knows his stuff. The dude should have his own meteorological show on cable..... They don't use the female groundhogs by the way, 'cos all they do is repeatedly predict that it's great shopping weather!

I figure Phil can predict the weather as well as the weather channel can, lol. However, I do agree with your sentiment in your opening statement! I guess we can't shoot the little sucker, can we? lol. For the first time since moving to PA. four years ago......I'm sick of snow, I'm sick of ice, and I'm ready for nicer weather. Of course it might have to do with the fact that I can't get to my doctor's office, and I will be moving in a month!

I think it's just folklore. Interesting history though and great researching...good job little bear! I actually like the winter so I just as soon it sticks around for at least another few weeks. We are supposed to be getting more snow this week!! Thank goodness....we need it! The stuff from last week is looking a bit dingy.

Groundhog - Punxsutawney Phil, fat little guy
Well, I think winter will be over when it is over. I do not think that fat little critter can predict. He surely is at, but he is cute. We are actually expecting snow again tomorrow, into Wednesday, by the end of the week it will be about fifty degrees. It is nice how Groundhog's day is celebrated in PA, I hope they had a good time.

well in the 122 years they've been keeping records of the groundhog, 9 times no record was recorded, 15 times the groundhog did not see his shadow, and 98 times the groundhog DID see his shadow! so it looks like the odds were stacked against us from the get-go.

I hate to break it to you but groundhogs can't really predict the weather. I do not accept that winter will last another 6 weeks. I think the winter will only last another 4 weeks. My uncle is a weatherman in Oklahoma City and he told me not to worry.
• United States
3 Feb 09
maybe he told ya not to worry cause he secretly knows the world is ending after 4 weeks! just sayin'!
