Yep. Because I KNEW this was going to happen! I spent a little time today following a mylot cheater around and telling them I had reported them each and every time they kept pasting the same paragraph over and over again in other people's discussions. I can't STAND it when people try to cheat the system like this. I knew they'd get caught and that all the points I gained when telling them off would go along with them, but as I said, I couldn't be happier! People who try to rort the system deserve to go down and we as members are obviously the best people here to find 'em and help nail 'em. So what about yourself? Will you make the effort to do something on here even though you KNOW that the points you gained while doing it will be taken back from you? Are you ever concerned about the consequences?

You are a hero to me!!! I've helped a few people out when they were being trolled and lost points, but no where near what happened to you..

For the record, there are many people here that are absolute champions when it comes to chasing down cheaters on this site. They have no concerns about the consequences at all and just set out to do what's right for all of us. I stumbled across this individual by accident really and just had a little free time to go after them for a while. Nothing more, nothing less! Yes we can always make points back up AND another cheater's posts are gone, so giddy up! lol.

You'll work it all out pretty quickly mrsl! We all make mistakes too, but as long as they aren't ever intentional or malicious, you'll find most people are pretty understanding. Just always remember that the more you put in, the more you get back here! And try not to think of it as a money making site because if you do, you'll get disillusioned pretty fast. It's about friendships and fun mainly. The earnings here and there are nothing but a bonus!

I don't normally have the time either, but in this instance I had a window in my day so used it! Another member was noticing this cheater also and we bumped into each other along the way! lol. If we individually report blatant violations, then together we can try to rid ourselves of most of the cheaters. Many good people have suffered here while cheaters often prosper, the more cheaters we can find and rid ourselves of, the better for us all.

Welcome to mylot ljbinkop! Scammers are everywhere and on pretty much most social sites, so here isn't really any different unfortunately. Yes, it IS a shame, but if we keep an eye out, we can at least report them and make it harder for them.

Oh believe me, there are many other that do this regularly and will chase down cheaters! Thank goodness for that because it's our responsibility as members to not let others ruin it for us. No individual can do this alone, but collectively we can make all the difference! I was in between meetings and saw this guy and thought "What the heck!" lol. It really only took me 20 minutes to check their profile and isolate the cases and comment on and then report many of them. I just don't understand how people can think they will get away with it!

Hi James72, and thank you for being honest. I don't know exactly how you catch cheaters, but if I did run into any, I would tell, even if I lost a little money in the process. It's one thing to make money, it's another to make it dishonestly. However, don't you think they would have found them anyway? So what, they copied and pasted the same material in a lot of discussions? Is that what they did?
@James72 (26790)

3 Feb 09
Hi LuckyLady. I don't think you "catch" cheaters as such, you just stumble across certain mannerisms every now and then and when you look deeper, you can see pretty quickly if they are doing the wrong thing or not. And yes, they were pasting the same blocks of text over and over again in multiple discussions. They were being quite clever about it too and picking discussions over 8 hours old that had no responses! Now who's gonna report a first post in a discussion of theirs that has had no responses for so long? Anyways, that's why we have the report icon! Another member and I bumped into each other because they were chasing this cheater too. If there is a blatant cheating violation then we should report it! Good riddance.

Cheaters exist in all walks of life Tatsinda. But at least here we have the power granted to us to be able to expose them for who they are! We all owe it to each other to make the effort to report any cheating we see on this site and as long as it's never abused, we should use the report button each and every time. Welcome to mylot too by the way and enjoy!

I have always done that. For some petty cents I cannot compromise with my beliefs, can I? This has cost me many cents, some scathing censures and not to mention a few discussion deletion. And to top that, I knew exactly who did it! Sometimes I just pity them, poor vindictive souls! And James, I have made it not to abuse the system repeatedly but people are there who will do it anyway. I know you are not the kind who would bother too much about the number of posts and cents. Just stand by your values like you always have. Smiles your way....

The people that cause issues are definitely vindictive and God knows why they derive such pleasure from causing issues either. They will always exist on here, but if we can all make the effort to reposnibly use the reporting functionality, then together we can at least keep these idiots to a dull roar most of the time. Most of us act within the guidelines and work hard to earn what we do, so why shouldn't they?? Idiots.

it is really important that we undertake the step that you went through, james. i did it once years ago here in mylot. however, i didn't go to such length as telling the guy that i have reported her/him to the admin. i believe that there used to be so many of them in the community then who were into this kind of thing. thus, those who had responded to their discussions suffer the loss of so many points. it is very disheartening since we spent much honest effort to come up with every single point added to our credit. it is good that you have uncovered those cheaters in the community. now, i am thinking if there are some ways wherein you can give us a hint as to who these people are so we can avoid responding to their discussions.

Ironically it is against the guidelines for me to specifically identify who this person is, trinidad! I have seen other members flat out tell cheaters they have been reported and I was not in the best of moods myself at the time so figured I would do the same! lol. And yes, it IS important for us all to make the effort to report cheating on this site. And even more important than this is that we do so RESPONSIBLY. Cheaters even abuse the reporting priveleges for ill gain and that's just not on.

Good for you sweetheart! I have lost many, many points over the years in this way and have never regretted it! Nowadays I am likely to report them but not tell them every time - not so I don't lose points or anything but because I feel it is a waste of time - they probably do not even read the responses to what they have left so best to tell them once, report it and then move on! xxx

No regrets, no surrender! (Or was that no retreat, no surrender??) Ah, who cares, my own version suits my purposes for now! lol. I made the decision a while back to make myself known when I reported someone and I plan to continue doing this. Even if the offender doesn't come back and see my comments, SOMEONE will see them and if it sends out a message of intolerance for these kinds of behaviours, then this is great as far as I'm concerned. I rarely report people mind you and it's only blatant cheating that will get my attention. And even these cases only come about because I stumble across instances while I'm doing my standard daily mylotting! I'm happy to hear that you've taken a stand at times too, because collectively we CAN make it harder for cheaters to thrive here. Thanks mummymo.

Well done James! It spurs others on to do likewise I'm sure as they know they are not alone in chasing the damn cheaters off. I saw you had assistance too and, by chance, I found yet one more by the same idiot and reported it too. I did not make my presence known then but I will be doing so later - I've just reported yet another and this one has not even 100 by his name yet! and one this morning who has tons of posts all plagiarised If only there were more people who realise it is not wrong to report the offenders. If they are allowed to stay it will be the honest members who will suffer in the long run. Hats off to you James!!!

We DO all suffer mysdiana. And the worst thing of all is that sometimes the people who go after cheaters suffer even more. Good for you for taking the time out to report blatant plagiarizers because they certainly don't deserve to be here. Everyone else make the effort, so they should also! And yes, another member was there to report this idiot also, which was great. I agree that it is important for all memebrs to understand how to report and that it's not wrong to do so. But another challenge is to ensure they use the reporting privileges responsibly as well, because some people unfortunately abuse them too. To be honest, I am half expecting this very discussion to be deleted!

It's funny that you should mention this discussion getting deleted because I was just wondering if it would get deleted myself... Something tells me there probably will, but I couldn't really care less, because if we don't get rid of the rotten apples they will spoil the whole bushel! It looks like there are some who have decided to become unofficial Mylot moderators on their own, and I wish that more people would take an interest because as you say there are people who misuse the reporting feature as well or will attack your star ranking... All the more power to them my postings will stand on their own as to my character. Just my 2¢ worth and happy Mylotting!

Well done. I do not like cheaters either and I think you were good to devote your time to this person. I used to not want to do anything that would affect either my points or my reputation but then I realised that I was not being myself. I admit that I get upset sometimes when I do lose points if I have been careful to avoid topics that I was sure would get deleted but I have gotten over that. The same with the little blue star I once had I do get concerned a little if it goes down too much but I know if I am true to myself and say something controversial then I will lose both. At the moment I am not spending as much time here as I need a break and only have so much time and energy to do the stuff I need to do and mylot has had to go on to the end of the list for a change. It used to be the first thing I did and so nothing else every got done so now it is on the end of the list and so sometimes I do not get time to spend here.

Batman of mylot? Heck no! I'm just someone who occasionally stumbles across a cheater and if I have the time spare, I'll chase them all over the place until they get caught. I haven't seen one for a while either actually, but I also have been far less active lately due to work committments. It's up to us all to be the eyes and ears on here for negative behaviour because admin can't be everywhere all at once! Thanks for the response pratyush and if I stumble across any cheaters in my travels and you're nearby, I'll let you know and we can play superheroes then! I have done so aswell, James, and sometimes the consequences aren't fun. For instance I was got it into my head that posting parts of the bible as discussions isn't making a real discussion. I asked the person to at least post a question with it and not plain pieces of the bible because that's not what mylot is intended for. Man, I tell you, she wasn't pleased of me telling that! I don't mind people talking about faith or religion, please do it intrigues me, but be open for discussion because mylot is all about that. If you don't want a discussion on something, don't post it. Simple as that. I am not sure whether or not I lost points, but I think my final answer 'please consider that this might look like you are trying to make a quick buck of the bible, because you don't take the effort to make it a discussion' did shake up the whole thing. I don't regret it, I believe it was the right thing to do. People would do it when someone copies any other book, so why not do it when someone does this with the bible?

You are right, James, and I wouldn't have been so worked up if it were one or two discussions like this but there was a whole bunch of them by the same person. It might be a lack of creativity, it might have something to do with wanting to promote your religion badly; it just didn't feel right. I agree that the large violations deserve more attention, luckily I don't come across those that often.

I agree with both you and savak in that we should at least provide supporting and freely written subject matter if we are to quote ANY book at all. Stand alone excerpts with no further comments or questions raised is nothing short of plagiarism! Some people by nature though will never take any form of criticism lightly at all. Even if it IS in their best interests. Personally I don't get overly worked up by the minor violations, but straight up cheating by multiple pasting the same thing over and over really makes my blood boil! I just don't understand how they can possibly think they can get away with it either??? Anyways, it's in our best interests to report blatant violations, regardless of the possible consequences. The strength of all our characters will win in the end!

I think you nailed him with your comment that he was trying to make a quick buck out of the Bible. If I had seen that type of discussion I would have had to say something similar. I have often responded to discussions about the Bible or religion. I have even started some of them. I also will quote the scriptures in the discussion to support a point or raise a question but I don't let it stand by itself. I actually enjoy discussing the Bible and do it freely ever chance I get. After all Mathew 10:8 says in part, "you received free, give free."

Just found this discussion, but I remember that repeating person, it was really weird. Well done for getting rid. I've never done something that major where I chased a wrongdoer right away from here, but I do sometimes join discussions that I know will be deleted, just to tell the person that their discussion will be probably be deleted as you're not allowed to post referral links/talk about earnings/racially abuse people etc. etc.. It's better that they know, rather than have it happen to them again and again. Happy myLotting!

The only time I'll chase away a wrongdoer is when I stumble across them during my normal activity. I don't go looking for them! I've been in discussions that I know will be deleted too and I think it's great that you take the time to let the starter know that it's probably going to go. In many cases, it's not something they've done on purpose, so the advice will help them in the future. There's a big difference between an honest mistake and a blatant cheat though! Even in the discussions where the person has cheated puirposely, I'll still sometimes respond and tell them they've been reported and this discussion will be gone soon. Thanks for the response liquorice and happy mylotting to you always as well!

How anyone can expect to try to cheat the system AND not get caught defies logic really. No shining badges wanted for me either!
