It's my problem when peeling or slicing onions. Somebody told me to put salt in the chopping board to avoid tears while slicing onions but its not working. Specially when onions is fresh... what can you suggest to avoid crying when slicing onions? Thanks

Breathing through my mouth rather than my nose tends to help me while chopping onions. Not sure if that will work for you but it works for me!

The easiest is to chew gum. I've tried it and it really works. I don't understand why...but it does. You can also try onion goggles, which shield your eyes from the spray of vapor from the onions, which is what makes your eyes burn when it combines with the moisture in your eyes to form an acid. You create tears to wash the irritating solution out of your eyes. You can buy onion goggles from places like Sur la Table. I've heard about freezing the onions for a while before slicing them and cutting them in half and soaking them in water first, but I think chewing gum is pretty easy too. You want to make sure that you start chewing it before you start chopping, though, or else it doesn't work as well.

Well what I usually did is to wet the onions before slicing. Wetting it cannot produce sharp splash to my eyes and make some tears. Try it.

to keep from having tears when you cut onions freeze it for 15 to 20 minutes. Also keep the root end on your onion until the last cut. Another trick is to light a candle near your cutting board. The flame of the candle will burn the sulfur that the onions produce when they are cut and makes the tears come. But be careful with the lite candle

You freeze the onion before slicing it. Another way it to soak it in water before slicing. This works. It was a technique I learned while I was in college having my catering cooking class. Hope it works for you!I also make sure I don't look at the onion while slicing it. We also sometimes put a fan facing the onion so the vapors go away from where we are.

Well, there is an effective way to avoid shedding tears while slicing onions. Put a glass of water near the area where you do the slicing. Or to be more effective use basin, put water in it and place it near the chopping board. That really works.

I have heard and tried myself with peppermint chewing gum. It does help but not completely. It also depends of onion, some onions are very strong, some weaker.

hello celestial052506! My technique is I wash the onion after it has been peeled in running water before slicing it and slice off the part with the roots last. I don't know if it is just my imagination but this always works for me and I am hoping that it works for you too.

There are always many remedies for this, but logically if you think about it.. we dont have to do silly things like balance a spoon on our nose or something like that. Its the juices of the onion which let out a gas which is absorbed by a wet surface, our eyes being the first it meets. if you do something like stick your tongue out, it is absorbed there instead, however you may look a little silly preparing dinner with your tongue bobbing out. It also works when you run your hands under the water, this again being the thing abosorbing the gases. Better still, try placing a bowl of water right next to the onion when chopping it, if the theory is right, this should abosorb the gas. Hope this helps and happy mylotting!
