Why is it ...?

Why is it, do you think, that when it snows in the UK the world (as we know it) ginds to a halt? The rest of the world, Canada, US, Sweden, Denmark and other areas around the world, regularly get snow, much more than we currently have, and they manage to continue to function! My brother lives in the South - just outside of London - and the other day they had about 16 inches of snow - almost unprecedented for that area. We live further north, in the Midlands, and this morning we woke to about3 inches of snow. It looks lovely but they have closed ALL the schools in our county and you are being advised not to go anywhere unless you absolutely have to. I do understand that areas which regularly get this much snow and more are set up appropriately, which perhaps we aren't, but really, we were forewarned of this weather - you'd think they would have enough salt to grit the roads and that the bus services would continue to work - at least! I should also say that this is the second snowfall since Monday and for the first one all the roads were gritted and things where we are, weren't too bad. Second snowfall 2 days later and the world grids to a halt!! Better to be safe than sorry - and everyone stays home and has a SNOW DAY!!!! WOO HOO

Iknow it is mad! I must say though that our school never shut once during the week that it snowed heavily, it stayed open every single day I was so not impressed!! They did not have enough grit either how on earth they managed to run out is beyond me but then again with us not getting much snow I guess people do not stay prepared. Our country seems to cross bridges as they come to them rather than plan in advance!!

I think it really depends on where one lives and if it is a normal thing to get snow. I think places that are use to getting the snow, seem to have the means to make the roads safer much quicker than the one's that don't usually get much snow. I live in Southern Indiana, USA and we had a few snow days from work last week. Don't get snow days too often, so always good to have a paid day off work.

hey I am here in montreal quebec canada and if we got 16 inches of snow we would be grinded to a halt as well, that is an awful lot of snow, that is a snow storm and no country can compete effectively with that. we may have more snow plows and such because we have to use it more than the uk but nature is nature. also in extremely cold conditions here, salt no longer works when the temperature is very cold.

I have been watching that on the weather channel! You are lucky for a snow day! we get alot here in Minnesota....so even a foot or more doesn't really stop anything too much...maybe schools but businesses are still open etc.

I have no idea why we cannot cope better we were warned about the snow days before it happened, you would think that they would have put some sort of plan in action. I live in the South East of England just 22 miles outside of London so we have been affected by the snow all this week. My children are yet again off school today due to the snow. This is the third day they have had off this week because off the snow. I can understand schools being closed in my area as lots of teacher do not live in the same town and have to drive to work. The one good thing to come out of this is that the kids are having a great time having snowball fights and building snowman.

I think people are not used to the fowl weather and so things slow down because of it. All facets of life are the same way. In areas where it snows and that is common they are more apt to be set for and expecting the weather to go that way where in your area they aren't.
