Do you sing?

How often does this question come up? Do you know if your friends sing and do you encourage them to be better or do you try to crush them?
The heart of the matter reveals a condition of the heart.
I ask the question recently to a friend and his was his reply, "it's funny you should ask me if I sing. Yes, I sing first tenor. Forgive me for not disclosing an actual location to you, but I am in the local chorale where I live (actually, the city next to mine). This semester, we are working on two requiems, those of Johannes Brahms and John Rutter. I was also invited to try out for the local opera some months ago, as they are apparently hurting for tenors (which is common just about everywhere). But I just couldn't put in that kind of a commitment. I've gotten too used to having a score in front of me, even when singing solo, unless it's something I've sung a hundred times. I don't like memorization; I like to avoid it when I can.:P"
I wanted to continue this discussion and reveal that I started singing as an Alto, and then I became a tenor but I found singing tenor usually required me to sing falsetto and if you know how to sing falsetto you know that means that you are stretching your vocal chords and you certainly can not sing with any real power. I like to be heard when I sing and I like to hear myself sing... Hmmm? Something like that... I know what results that I want but often times I find my results are lacking, I am not getting the desired result that I was trying to achieve for this reason or that mostly I believe for the lack of being trained with the new instrument that has a very unique range...
Right away when I sense that the song is going to jump up and if I'm not ready to sing I will drop down and try to go below in order to prevent that crack that happens all to often in the upper levels. So I go down and then it goes down even further almost like going below the foundation well oopps that is a little too low.. Suddenly I have to come up for some fresh air. I wasn't prepared for all the troubles that are associated with a lack of support and understanding.
Like life, we all need our aides, be they the scripts synchronized or the legal system working for the best interest of all involved. The problem is that the judicial system is not working and there are many changes that need to be made.
Singing can be a distraction to what is going on in life at the time when all around you your world is being attacked. Singing can be a release and singing can reveal a lot about your knowledge of your own presence.
I sang solo in the fifth grade as an Alto, from then on, I sang in a choir, so I had plenty of help all around me, then I sang on stage in performing in the show Jesus Christ Super Star and today I sing for the ones that I love... Not that my beloved blood will here me sing, but I will here me sing and my friends can hear me sing. I admit that I'm not the best but to sing solo is not easy if the tools are not the absolute best to begin with, singing acappella can actually be easier when there is nothing to distract you from your intended goals but to sing acappella your audience really needs to be supportive, confidence is such a fragile thing...
We have to be careful to give positive feedback to those who are deserving of that quality and make sure that negative forces are curbed from creating more negative energy.
The problems in our world stem from these very forces the positive ones being restricted while the negative ones are not only given freedom but also encouraged to steal what is not theirs. We tend to keep rewarding negative influences instead of supporting those positive influences that are extremely rare and important to our global health. The more positive energies that we create the more healthy our community will become. The real negative stress's are those that will cause a community to fail those that impersonate others and are vulgar exercising authority and undue influence over the innocent.
Music the key to harmony...
Music brings people together, creative artist, performer, and audience...
So?

I thought I remembered this discussion. I'm glad my memory is still working like it's supposed to.
And to answer your questions that you asked soooo long ago I do have speakers and a mic but I need to get my desktop up and running before I hook them up. They just won't work as well on this laptop.

I came here through another discussion. I am not quite sure they were related. I sing in a church choir, and in the car. Things change and it seems like there is less time for fellowship in our choir, or team building, and my job sometimes prevents me from being on time, so I am pondering whether or not to give it up. Philosophically I note that worship needs not just the choir and worship team in front, leading the worship, but avid participants in the rear of the sanctuary echoing their music and praise and enthusiasm.Pushing the congregation along, giving them permission to celebrate as well.

In its earliest days my denomination had a big emphasis on the joyful celebration of the whole congregation. We have gotten to modern and shy about it now. While choir is on summer hiatus, I sit in the rear and sing my loudest (like I did as a child) and I think it adds something, and I clap and praise. That turns others loose to do as well. I am not talking about a church of thirty to a hundred, but more like three to four hundred. We are not meant to be a bunch of stuffed shirts. Another emphasis that spurred the launch of my denomination, or the separation from its original source was compassion for the poor and the freedom to worship, whether rich or poor, slave or free, male or female, freedom to experience the Holy Spirit and freedom from the worldly things that tie us down. Yes, it is fun to find some variety in our discussions here.

Hi Garden Gerty,
I love that you are so full of life and encouragement but as for the cult, (Uhmm, I mean denomination that you now belong too... See: TGWBMyStory to understand why I'll never set foot over the threshold of another man made structure for the purpose of worship --(I can think of better descriptions???)) The song that comes from the heart is heard long after the voice stops making sound, in that silence you come to know an inner meaning that resonates and fills the most empty of halls. The song is Love and first we Love that we are created so the created will love the creators and if the creators are not worthy of that love then we love those above and beyond.
There is a kingdom, a source of life, where all good voices will gather and the song to be sung will be beyond what we consider beautiful and breathtaking, for the angels will sing the glory of GOD. For many God is not real, for them finding God is like trying to find justice, impossible to locate but yet this ideal still exists, but only in the hearts and minds of the most faithful. There is only one truth and that truth is not found in the works of people, because people build upon false foundations out of greed and the ability to control others. The power that they seek is a result of their own weakness.

See I'm tricky that way but wasn't it a fun read and when you finally put all the pieces together doesn't it make sense?
As for the congregation being ungrateful even though the overworked and overly dedicated members and former members of the choir love to sing, the fact remains that there is a greater choir to belong to it is the choir of heaven and you can only gain admission into this choir by having your work on Earth matching the pure and holy simplicity of the truth that is only found with one GOD a collective source of all that is good.
What is built on the false foundations by the hands of man will crumble into dust the church is such a distraction to where we need to go that between the insurance industry the book publishing industry and the political factions that control our wealth and health there remains no room for purely honest people many of whom might happen to be very poor as a result of the greed of the elitists in control.

In grade school I sang in the school choir, which was also the Church choir (Catholic you know). In High School I sang in the choir. Both choirmasters
constantly admonished me to sing 'softly, as softly as possible'. I took this to mean my voice was so great they didn't want me to over power lesser talents.......
I grew up in a household where music and musicals were constantly being played on the piano, guitar, or stereo. I know the words to every Gershwin, Roger and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, and other greats, song ever written. Music gave my growing years (and still does today), flavor, depth, fun, freedom and sounds to revel in.
However.
When I sang lullaby's to my babies, they cried like the world was a horrible place.
That's when I realized just WHY I was always admonished to sing 'softly.......'! LOL

ya know, Spark, I am a firm believer that everyone can sing! some people sing the words perfectly.. some sing the notes perfectly..... some just sing the melody in their heart.. but every song is beautiful! ya just gotta listen with your heart to hear it. and that's where listeners miss it!
there isn't a doubt in my mind that you aren't an awesome singer!

Well you know it is said that if you give a man the right incentive he might just sing above the heavens, you can't get much higher than that...
Hi and how are you and I'm sure so and so and so will lead us to another note... which is la a note to follow so... Which makes me question so? What next la and ti or tea if you have a drink with jam and bread, somehow I always thought of german bread, hmmm? getting pretty close to home there... and that would bring us back to Doh! or Do! That is a shame, and I don't mean that in a negative way, if you like to sing it is my belief that any voice is capable of singing a song. But like me you might need a little help and instruction.
The one thing I will add is that you know you the best, I just hope you're not hiding something really beautiful... I was not encouraged to sing, but then to the surprise of one of my critics I did a really cool harmony the descant to 'Turn Around Bright Eyes' I did that perfectly and blew my critic away, but then again they knew I could sing, they just wanted to poison the minds of those around us, those being our children.

Ok got a question was all that wa said about friends singing all from him or was some of it from you.
DO you sing!?
When younger I had a 3 octave reach in my voice.
But I really like the alto part so thats what I went with the most.
If haveing a duet I always had some one that sand higher.
Now I sing for myself mostly for my voice isnt what it used to be.
and I still take the lower alto trail.

The only thing that he said was in quotation marks in the beginning, everything else was my own writing.
I made a little mistake just before his quote where I wrote and his is his writings,... It should have been and here is his writings;
I do sing, not well as I'm quite rusty and in need of some professional guidance, I could use a good voice teacher, and then I have to question my ability to remember written material, I have some stuff committed to memory but I prefer to work off of a written score because committing things to memory take a lot of time and effort along with a lot of practice.
It is also my belief that traveling the lower trail is easier, unless you need to travel the high road it is important not to do that when the wind is blowing hard or where you can't perform with just a whisper of a breath in order to get the right sound and volume...
Just another thing that we two have in common with many other people around here.

I do sing yes and I do it regularly, but only on an online karaoke site. It was something I took very seriously in my late teens, but these days I sing purely for my own enjoyment and as an escape! Music DOES bring people together and it's more than just food for the ears too. It's a harmonious and all encompassing medium that has the capacity to embrace and inspire our very soul and those around us!

Hello there my friend! I really can't sing, can't carry a decent tune. Whenever I sing, my family will laugh and so do I!
But I am glad to learn that you really know how to sing. People who can sing are really blessed. And although I am not one of those blessed with a good voice, still I consider myself blessed because I benefit from hearing good music. My soul feel relaxed whenever I hear good music. keep singing my friend!
Take care and have a great day!

I agree with your last statement there; that music brings people together. Although I'm not a great singer, I do appreciate music. I on it to listen to it while having my shower, while doing my work, while lotting. And I even see great music being projected on movies, with the individual soundtracks too.

Aha, I have found where the two discussions are intertwined, and it is good. Renews my belief that I am sane. I was wondering about whether we should mention singing in the car. It is a very good thing to do early in the morning, or when full of tension because of traffic and unfamiliar places. I think singing is how I deal with the great traffic accordion when I go to bigger cities.

There are two songs, one comes from the voice the other comes from the heart and I can hear your song it is beautiful.
Music and Poetry...
Hey' I got one...
I was stopped today by a person sitting over the stop line talking on their cell phone, stopping the flow of traffic stopping the movement of commerce, stopping the economy, stopping where you shouldn't be, why the state mark that intersection so tight in the first place, why do cars crash and why are trucks always late?
Why can't people learn to drive right? Have you seen the the vehicular accordion? Everyone stopped for the green light, Stopping for lights both green and red when traffic is busy we create our own grid lock, driving the motor vehicle accordion.
Now the next time you see that light turn green take a look at how many cars are still at a stop because they sit nose to tail not one behind can move until the one in front gives room...
What causes a traffic jamb and grid lock? Tailgate lately?

Yes, i do. Only when I'm in the bathroom or in the comforts of my room. I guess it wouldn't be fair to people to subject them to such cacophony. LOL
Anyway, no one has asked me if i could sing (well, now you've asked me, so...) I don't know why. Maybe it's because they can already tell by the way I look that i cannot so they just don't ask me to save them the breath and energy in asking me.

Welcome to mylot, I asked everyone who would come across this discussion, I'm totally sorry I didn't notice your response sooner...
Here is the thing, music comes from the heart, a friend of mine explained it this way if you have the courage to sing you are one step ahead of the rest who are too scared to even try.
I still feel music is an issue of the heart and so as I write this Heart the group is played on the radio station that I am listening to, the song Barracuda... Tell me that song doesn't stir your heart, I also really like 'Total Eclipse of the Heart, by Bonnie Taylor...
By your looks, you are beautiful... Go for it!

I sing all the time but the only person that hears me is my wife and for that the rest of the world needs be grateful. I make up random songs about what is happening at that moment or if I can't think of any words I make up words. It gives me pleasure but would not be a pleasant experience for others.

I know your pleasure and what a fine way of expressing how many of us approach music. With proper practice I can remember a score, not just a song but a series of songs, it does take practice and a patient director. The memory is an amazing tool, you learn when you memorize music that the more time spent away from the score the more likely it is that you will change the proper sequence and tone at which point the words can easily be rearranged.

Singing is good for the soul. I love to sing. If a certain subject comes up, could be anywhere, and there is a tune out there to suit, I'll sing it.
Do you have a beautiful voice?
Sang solo in the school choir, 40 something years ago and joined in a C & W group back in the 70's. Have done a little stuff on stage but not much lately. Not saying I'm any good just love to do it.

Well, Your exact question is do I sing? And the answer to that is yes... do I sing in pulic? no way, Do I want to sing in public? No. And finally will they ALLOW me to sing in public... probably not... unless I was under the influence and then they probably would leave me alone...because I might be annoying to be around in that state ...but, I'm basically harmless and not likely to hurt anyone but myself!
Not that I would EVER consider doing anything like that!
But, as for enjoying music and watching live performaces, I love it, and there used to be a gorup of us that regularly sang a bunch of songs with just a guitar.. sometimes around a campfire, but not always. I would even get up the courage to sing or hum along quietly myself.
You are absolutely right though music can and does bring people closer together and everyone can participate, even if they are tone deaf like me and couldn't sing on key if my life depended on it.
Nice to see you again Gary.

Hi,
You're such a sweetheart,
I'm trying to get back into the groove...
It certainly takes a bit of determination, to get things just so...
Your children are truly blessed to have you for their mother...
Yes, there is a universal language in music and poetry.
A person that can hear the song of the heart knows much about others and where they are coming from.
It also opens a person up, and we get to see who really knows the definition of the word respect...
Respect and trust are certainly two words that are earned,,,
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Gary
