Without even opening her coffin, modern science has revealed a new mummy! http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2219623.ece

That's great that they could "see" what she looked like without opening up the sarcophagus. Uh, how can they tell she was an attractive woman though as it says in the article. I mean one can't really tell what a person really looked like just based on the skeleton. And I always wondered why the idea of putting pebbles/stones over the eyes....many cultures seemed to have done that...does it have to do with that idea of the eyes being a mirror of the soul and one puts stones over the eyes to keep the soul in???

Some people in the comments on the artical mentioned the same thing. I think they are looking at the "regularness" of the bone structure of the skeleton. Now, pebbles in Egypt's case was in part because they wanted the body to look as normal as possible so they inserted the stones in the eye scockets to keep them from being sunken.

There are specialists who can reconstruct the face on the basis of the shape of the skull. They work in criminal forensics as well as archaeology. Actually, mostly in forensics I would have thought, as the police have a reason for wanting to know what a murder victim looked like when there is nothing but bare bones left but it's not really important for archaeologists unless they are preparing for an exhibition of some kind.

Hi Elic, That is amazing what new tech can do these days and what fantastic findings, I hope when they find more mummies they won't have to open the cofin and disturb them. Tamara

I agree, I hope they do find more mummies and can also leave them undisturbed while examining them remotely.

absolutely, there are so many that were "unwrapped" by early treasure hunters that I can really see that they would want to keep any they find now wrapped up - but still investigate them.

That's great. I know if they had opened the sarcophagus it would have at least somewhat damaged the remains. I wonder what they could do with other technology, like a MRI.

yep that is cool, there are many mummies that have been found over the years, we have one in one of our university museums here ever since I was a child.

I've seen mummies, but we don't have any that I know of in Austin. Most of the ones I've seen have been at the British Museum.

That is amazing! I hope that her coffin remains unopened too, as I know I'd be very cranky if someone dared to wake me from my few thousand year slumber.

Yeah, I think there's lots of cool things we've come up with in the last 20 years, I remember the early age progression wasn't real good.
