The roomie asked me to do a recommendation/review of this book for a group we're in.
I was so happy with it that I thought I'd share it with my friends here on myLot!
Shadow Puppets by Orson Scott Card
I believe this is number 3 of the "Shadow" series by Orson Scott Card.
This follows the story of Bean, one of the wonder kids that was part of Ender's team that made up the book Ender's Game. Card returned to the series in Ender's Shadow following Bean's story.
Personally, I felt that these books were more in the feel of the first book than the "Speaker for the Dead" books that followed Ender into space.
Bean was probably the only one of the kids that might've even been smarter than Ender. He was also the most interesting of Ender's companions, and the best filled out of them in the original book.
Earth is no longer united against the "Buggers" after Ender's Game and immediately fractures back into nation states. Bean joins forces with Ender's biggest nemesis, his brother Peter, as Peter tries to bring peace back to Earth. In the course of the fight, we see that Bean has his own demons to haunt him.
The resolution comes in Shadow of the Giant, the 4th book.

I'm into Orson Scott Card, even if he's a homophobic bigot (which he is). I'm going to finish the whole series in 2010, along with about 91 other works in 2010. I'm kind of annoyed that he's such a big, old jerk. It means I can't ever go to see him read. I'll be too tempted to bring up his political beliefs.
