Celebrating your birthday

Do you have a special way that you celebrate your birthday every year? Do you plan things out? Or let others plan things out? Or just go with the flow? Do you take the day off work? Or is it just like any other day?

Mine is different every year now that I don't have to blow out the candles Last year I phoned my mother two days before and asked if she would make me a cake for my birthday. As I'm in Italy and she is in UK she obviously replied 'Oh, but there's not enough time to get it done and sent for it to arrive on time' to which I replied 'Well I'd better come and eat it there then!' She was unaware that I had booked the flight some weeks earlier. This year I spent it here and went out for lunch with my son and daughter-in-law. That made it special and as it was a Sunday too it didn't interfere with anyone

Touche! lol That is where those candles with the numbers on them become useful. You only need 2 of them and they are much less of a fire hazard!

Why not blow out the candles? You don't want to set the house on fire!

I wouldn't mind treating it like just any other day. But my husband won't hear of it. He treats me very well on the day of my birthday, starting with making breakfast for me and then spoils me throughout the day.

for me, it is generally like any other day because it is usually on a weekday although i may go out for supper at night. i generally dont take the day off work because i only work part time and where i work, its so busy. i do work with someone that always takes her birthday off though.

I **love** birthdays! I plan my birthday out every year because, if I count on others, they tend to forget or they don't feel like handling things. That's fine with me because, if I plan things out myself, then I know I'll enjoy the day no questions asked. :-) I usually take the day off if I can afford to, or work the first part of the day. I don't like looking at birthdays as just an oridinary day . . . it is, after all, the day you came into the world and that should be celebrated in my opinion. :-)

I hate where there are too many people to talk to too. Or when I'm giving a party with a lot of people and I'm running around so much after food and everything and then when it's over I hardly got to talk to anybody!

Our family has a thing for planning the first, seventh, thirteenth and eighteenth ones. We just do. But we still treat it as an ordinary day--the adults go to work and the kids go to school, but after hours we all go out and eat. It's been that way since I was born. This year I had my debut [last friday], and my mom was pushing me to have a party. I don't really like parties so I cashed that one out instead. It got me quite something to keep. Teehee. Happy MyLotting!

Ever since I was 21, I celebrated my birthday the same way..with my friends and the people I love somewhere safe getting wasted drinking until the following day..but now that I am getting closer to 30 and now a mother, I plan to spend my birthday just being thankful I survived another year. I was always told that your 30th birthday can be depressing, but I am sure I won't see it that way...

30 is nothing, 40 is nothing, even 50 is nothing... 60 has me a wee bit worried...

To be honest, I'd rather not make a big deal out of my birthday at all. The whole cake and "Happy Birthday" song stuff is not really my thing for some reason. I do appreciate it when people make the effort though.

The first things I do is thank God I have another birthday! There are certain people who call most of the day lol so I spend my birthday taking phone calls and usualy receiving flowers! I never really have any definite plans lol

Hi Dawn - It varies from year to year. I do not usually do anything in particular. I guess nowadays I like for my family to plan something for me, even if it is just an evening out to a nice dinner. I do not expect anything real extravagent. I mean, who can afford that anyway?! It's my dog's b-day today though!

I used to plan a big family gathering, and it would be a combined party, because my oldest son's birthday is the very next day. But then when he got in school I stopped our big family parties and just invited his friends for his party, and have pretty much ignored my own birthday ever since. I won't even do cake anymore because we have cake for my son's birthday, not to mention my wedding anniversary is the week before that, and Mother's Day usually falls in the same week too, if not on the same day!

Hi dawny Well I never used to celebrate my birthday at all when I was with my husband because he never believed in it or celebrated birthdays! So the first birthday I was away from him I couldn't do too much because me and my kids were living in a womens refuge but we went to McDonalds and met up with my brother which was a great surprise because I thought he was still abroad on base as he is in the army. Last year my mum bought me a microlightning flight which was great. I have no idea what my mum will have planned for me this year!! She always takes a week off for her birthday but I think this year it might be 2 weeks as it is her 60th!

Oh dear today must be a crying day for me, I teared up just reading the title. I'm a crier anyway, but my Birthday is just around the corner and I never celebrated it by myself. My birthday and my grandfather's birthday are one day apart, and so growing up we always had a joint birthday cake and it never had just my name it, it had his too. Both he and my grandmother would both come and spend the weekend at our house. He passed away two years ago this May and so last March was my first birthday without him and although we had fun and shared memories of my grandfather it was sad to celebrate by myself, which is why I teared up when I read this discussion. It's funny how certain family rituals start for one reason and then continue for another to become a lifelong tradition. Last year, was difficult for me because it was my first birthday without him but it was still a special day for me as well and like I said there was lots a laughing and talk about what he would've said or done had he been with us. Thanks for giving me the chance to think about my memories and until next time, happy Mylotting.

My birthday and husbands are a week apart so we always try to plan something that we can go together instead of having two birthday outings. We either plan a long weekend with some friends to just go to the beach, and hang out, or plan a night away alone, to go to dinner, and some dancing.

I don't usually plan for something in my birthdays. The usual thing happens on my birthdays is some visitors, like in-laws and friends who surprise me. There were times that I can't leave the house but to celebrate with them. They spend their own money to make us all happy in my birthday. Of course, all I can do is to thank them.

hello dawnald i guess that i let others plan things out for me on my birthday like that. and i just go with the flow. lol funny thing about my birthday is that i always have to make my own birthday cake. hello people! it is my birthday. lol don't you think that somebody could bring me over a birthday cake on my birthday? lol a few years ago, my brother did surprise me in bringing me over a birthday cake that he made for me when that i turned forty, it was an over the hill birthday cake. duh, i thought that fifty was over the hill. lol right? i always do like to go out to eat somewhere to one of my favorite restaurants on my birthday, i do not like to cook on that day. i give myself a break from cooking when it is my birthday. take care and have a beautiful afternoon.

If any of the children are here then I will have a birthday dinner. Or if no family on the Island then I will invite girlfriends for lunch. The children and grands phone and that makes it special. My 8 year old grand is on the Island and I will definitely see her on the day. I've always enjoyed birthdays really and love it when everyone calls me and I like to receive gifts and cards too. Who doesn't?

Perfect timing dawnald! My birthday is this Sunday - yay for turning 21! I don't make a big deal out of mine, even this one. My family and I go out to dinner, Red Lobster being the tradition. I get a few presents and a cake and enjoy getting caught up with people I haven't talked to in a while when they call or text me a happy birthday! (I like that part best, lol).
