I had a bag of oranges that I forgot about in a cabinet. They went bad and of course I ended up with fruit flies. Now this was a week ago. I am still seeing fruit flies but I have no more fruit in the house. How do you get rid of them?

hello moneymommy oh my gosh! how could anybody forget about a bag of oranges that they have had like that? oranges or anything else doesn't go bad around my house. lol and i have never had fruit flies before or any other kind of an insect in my home so i cannot help you on getting rid of your fruit flies like that. ewww. all i can tell you to do is to swat those fruit flies with a flyswatter or a piece of rolled up newspaper or anything that you have to swat them with. good luck to you in getting rid of the fruit flies that are in your house like that. keep those new discussions coming! take care and have a beautiful evening.

i would like also that no fruit at all gets spoiled at home. they cost us some money to get hold of. however, there are times when they just get forgotten and left not eaten. then when they rot, there goes the problem. i can see that you never had this problem yet, tnwoman. your prescription for getting rid of insects infesting an area at home tickles me. smiles for you, my friend. happy mylotting!

Take a glass and put some vinegar in and make a funnel out of aluminum foil and the flies will go in and get trapped. In theory fruit flies are only supposed to live for 24 hours but I always found out they seem to hang around for a wek before they die off. If you have other fruit you should put it in the refrigerator and refrain from buying new fruit until all the flies are gone. You can wait it out but spraying will not make any difference. I have heard those yellow sticky strips trap them too although I have never used them. If you threw the oranges in the garbage they will still come from there. Geti rid of the old fruit, either in the garbage or the recyle bin if you have organic recycling and get it out of the house. The flies are probably around your sink looking for moisture.

I have the sticky strips hanging in my kitchen. They only caught two, I am going to try the vinger trick too. Im sure if I use all the ideas here something will work.

Clean up and don't feed them, they only last twenty four hours. But if there is the least little bit of fruit or vegetables around they will find it. I'm pretty sure they don't eat meat. Good luck

The only solution I can think of, is to get rid of the smell left by the fruit or any other smell that stinks. So basically, you should clean everything that still smells and apply LYSOL spray on it. I did that before and It worked for me. Hope this helps.

I think I am going to try to pour bleach down my sink and see what happens. I think they maybe attracted to something down the drain.

Oh no!! Fruit flies are the worst! We had them over the summer and they kept coming back .. finally we realized they were actually coming out of our drain in the kitchen sink! Even after we did drain-o and bleach, they kept coming back. Finally we put vaseline on the lip of a cup and stuck it to the drain for a few days and that cured it. :D Good luck!!!

I think they may be coming out of my sink. They seem to hang around it. Maybe I will try that trick of yours.

Try cleaning your cabinet out with bleach water, that should take care of any residue that may be left. If you still have them you may wish to call an exterminator to come out and see if there is more then just what was in the bag. I've gotten them before when forgetting about bananas and generally after a few days they just disappear after their food supply is gone.

i always spray the area where fruit flies abound with lysol spray, moneymommy. i do this after i have thoroughly cleaned the affected area. way back at the farm and at the house in the province, we always have fruit flies around us. they are really not much bother for us. they are harmless and they fly around the peelings at the yard. as for cases when they get into the house, due to failure to have gotten rid of the fruit peelings early enough, i just clean the place well and good with soap and water. then, usually they are gone. lysol spray is used only for those cases when, the fruit flies cannot be easily rid of.

hello, i know these flies are so disgusting....and its so difficult to get rid of them..... once they enter the house, it takes time to get rid of them completely,...but I'll say that the best thing to do is to keep the place clean.....hope you get rid of them soon.... have a nice day.

Hi moneymommy...We get a lot of fruit flies and drain flies which look the same. It doesnt matter how clean you keep everything here, they will still appear. For the ones hanging around the sink, I have been told to use pepper. For fruit flies, I use vinegar and water in a bowl with saran wrap over it and tiny holes poked in. THEY get in and get trapped as they cant get back out. I put a couple of these around the area. They do work. IN time once the source is removed, they will disappear. Just make sure the spot where the fruit was, is cleaned thoroughly so no odour remains
