Do you think the United States is turning into a Socialist nation?

What do you think about this? It seems that the Senate will pass the $787 billion bill and President Obama will make it official. This would be the second stimulus package that will exceed $700 billion. But isn't this Socialism? The government can't keep borrowing money from people because eventually all the money would run out. Also, not all of the money in this stimulus package will actually stimulate the economy. Only about 30-40 cents of every dollar will. Do you have any other ideas that could help America and the rest of the world through these hard times?

this my personal opinion. A society needed to develop in the future, so whatever it takes, the government will get us through this hardship to stand strong. As for the whole world per se.

This hypothesis that American is jumping from the flying pan of "big government" into the fire of "socialism" is getting a bit old. The very purpose of government, at least as our Founders defined it, is "to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." This is a direct quote from the Preamble of the United States Constitution. I suppose that many today would argue that these expressed goals are socialist, what with all those words about welfare and justice, not to mention promoting liberty. Egads! What next?

I havent read the bill(and I dont plan to) but from everything I've heard about this bill, they have effectivly turned what used to be a free country into a socailist regime. I seriously doubt that the U.S. economy will ever recover now that this bill has been voted in. As you stated, there is very little to help stimulate the economy. Say goodbye to what used to be the most prosperous country on the planet. Waves, Tianna

I can see from the faces of some of these corporates CEO they are very happy of this massive spending bills especially the big three auto makers and big banks, and also luxury home owners, soon they will be able to continue their lavish life style uninterrupted in this greatest nation on earth.

Actually, if it was socialism, the government would start buying up the banks and other private sectors and start running them, not spend money on them and give them funding.

We are a socialist nation. It started in small increments many years ago, and it is progressing. The government has invaded our privacy, our homes, they tell us how to raise our children, the schools are teaching liberal, socialist propaganda....we are already there. We have the nanny state: the government regulating our health and other activities; And, we have big brother: the government getting people to put pressure on other people to conform. It is totally Orwellian. Let's not forget politically correct speech, we no longer have free speech in this country

Yes I do. I don't know if its necessarily a bad thing though. Mixed socialism has worked well for Europe and it is clear something has to be done with our economic situation. I wouldn't mind some governmental control in certain aspects of the market.

I think most governments are retreating frmo capitalism, and becoming more socialist lately, though I am not really sure if this is bad. Naturally when a system, like the recent capitalism we had, fails, people retreat towards something else. Here, a more socialist system.

The American social structure and economy has worked so well so far, for a certain class of people. There is always room for improvement. I do not see supplying decent health care to its citizens a step backwards for a country, especially if it is done right you can get better care for less. United States pays more per person for health care yet gets worse outcomes in some cases. Only certain classes of people can access and afford proper health care while the rest of the populace goes without or gets restricted. The socialism seems to be in the direction of helping out the commercial sector, not the common people who are being forclose upon. For them little has changed.
