I am, for the first time in my life, living outside my home. I am away from my family and it is going to be so for at least a couple of months. My first day at the hostel wasn't that bad actually but it certainly wasn't any thing like a day at my home. The food too is not that bad but some how I couldn't find any thing good about it either. Have you ever lived in a hostel? What was it like for you?

I used to remember when i was living far away from my parents to pursue my College degree, i was in a boarding house with my fellow female friends. We used to help each other on our assignments and projects in school. I spent 4 years boarding but i see to it that i visit back home every weekends and every semester break. The food is great since our land lady cooks best and she prepares them very nice and neat. The whole house is fantastic too since it is just near our University and we don't spend money for transportation going there.

I wish i don't become one like most of them there. It is just my second day in the hostel and one thing for sure, the place where a woman is disrespected the most has to be a boys hostel and they certainly use those two words a lot.

In the beginning everyone hates the way others talk and behaves in there...well you are quite right about what you have just said...are you preparing for CA/CS...well i have only heard that laxmi nagar has got lots of coaching institutes for these...i am sure though not the ideal ones but will learn to use those two words...hope not spoiling you though...

i stayed at boarding school when i started my senior high school - when i was 16, in 1986 - and that was the first time i lived away from my family, from my mom.. it wasnt easy, of course.. the fact that so you have learn to be independent and at the same time 'co-exist' with others in a shared dormitry, shared toilets, shared learning space... all within the same age.. it was an experience i will never forget.. true.. you cant really comment about the food... it's neither good nor bad.. to me, it was just 'different'.. it was just wasnt my mom's cooking.. but i survived and i am sure you will, too... good luck !!

Hi coolmailraj, I too have experienced that but it was quite a few years ago. It is difficult at first for most people and some are never comfortable with it. I have been away from home for as much as four months at one time. At other times it was as much as three months. I can't say that I enjoyed it and was later able to find employment near my home and could be with my family every night. I hope that you will become more comfortable as time passes and that you will be with your family again in a short while. Blessings.

I've never lived in a hostel, but I've stayed in a dormatory before. It wasn't too bad either, it took a while to get used to having so many people around. Once I got to know some of them, it wasn't so bad. It's funny that you talked about the food. Probably all schools are the same. Our food was all good quality, but it was flavorless. I'm used to spicier food, and what they served was very bland. I bought some of my own seasonings to 'doctor it up'. Was better after that. Cheer up, at least you will only be there for a few months. I hope your classes or instuction is interesting and makes the inconvenience worth the effort. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

I probably won't be doing any touch ups to the food served. As I have said it is not bad, it is just the fact that my mom is a master chef and prepares delicious food and yes I'll be updating my status. cheers

yes hostel life is like that, though i have never stayed away from home i had friends at college who were staying at hostel and i have seen their lives very closely. Food is always the major problem, even the small things like tea etc can't satisfy your needs, unless you are allowed to use an electric heater etc to make it for urself.

Hi coolmailraj, Many, many years ago when I was young, I lived in a hostel for a few months near where I worked in London, it was a nice place and the food was good but as good as my mum used to cook, later on I moved back home and only moved out when I got married at the age of 27. Tamara

What an adventure! I lived in hostels years ago. The best time I ever had in one was in Singapore. I met young people from all over the world and the conversations were amazing even with language barriers. We had parties, played games and a couple of the people ended up travelling through Malaysia with us. We often ran into someone from the hostel as we were backpacking around. They were great times away from home!

From whatever you have said, I just have a feeling that all your companions were not only your hostel mates but also your working buddies. The place where I am right now have boys from different dialects and we are not gong to have that much time together.
