Cell phone use and car accidents

We all know that cell phone use in the car, while being the driver, has increased accidents, laws in many states have been created to make it illegal to do so, yet idiots still do it!! What is worse is that having hands-off cell phones does not seem to help. Statistics prove that anything that distracts the driver, cell phones, conversations with others, eating, drinking, changing the radio station, etc., all contribute to accidents. My take on it is that maybe cars should be made that you MUST have both of your hands on the wheel, if driving automatic, and of course one hand on the wheel and one on the stick shift or both on the wheels if driving a standard (stick shift) car. I do not know how that can be enforced or maybe the car could be made that way but I do not understand why people think that it can never happen to them!! I know young drivers do not realize it but adults who have been driving should certainly know better. I feel that it is so selfish, just PLAIN SELFISH!! How dare people take a chance on my life and my loved one's lives? How dare they risk your life and those of your loved ones? A 2008 study from AAA says using a cellphone while driving almost quadruples the risk of crashing. What's more, the risks that come with using a hands-free phone are just as high as those from holding a phone in your hand. In 2007, 6% of drivers nationwide were holding a cellphone to their ear at any given time during the day, according to the NHTSA.

Hi nanajanet! I hate to see someone using a cellphone while they are driving. It's distracting and irresponsible to do so. It not only puts their life at stake, but the lives of others too. The new fad is texting and I have seen people trying to do that as well while driving. I think it should be outlawed too.

I had posted, at an earlier date, about a 19 year old girl and another girl, one pregnant (I forget who) were both in an accident and killed because she was on the phone. How stupid is that?!

It is a pity that despite all the educational campaigns you still see careless drivers who answer their cell phones while driving. I think it is very difficult to enforce it unless you have street cameras who monitor all streets which is almost impossible to achieve that.
