Chiropractor 1 determines from and xray that you have a herniated disk. You see an ad for Chiropractor 2, who has a treatment specifically for herniated disks. You ask Chiropractor 1 about the treatment. He says the treatment won't help because the disk is too badly damaged. Later a doctor refers you to Chiropractor 2 and the treatment helps A LOT. Do you go back to Chiro 1 and tell them?

If I were the patient, then I would go back to the first one just to simply say THANKS. You stated clearly that the first doctor REFERS the treatment from the second one, so basically he already tried to be responsible. Imagine if the first one took another approach which could lead to the herniated disk destruction. So, it has been known that chiropractors shouldn't leave the patient right away once they know they can't handle the treatment. So, referring the patient to the most suitable treatment is the final approach.

I like the idea of writing. Don't particularly want to talk to them!
